Yeah, and how much of that experience is applicable. Those of us that grew up working with computers Like myself (Read 23 yrs old, wrote my first program at Age 4) have a lot to offer. We can be energetic, knowledgeable and often more used to thinking outside traditional design startegies to get the job done.

It's funny, reading this piece really made me think about some things.

1.) People on slashdot are not average users. Too many people here keep rambling on about "well, I don't do it that way! " Enough people, how large a percentage of web users is made up of slashdot posters? 5% tops? if that! Your mom and that idiot down in accounting would probably disagree if they knew enough to do so.

2.) When did the computer industry forget the old acronym K.I.S.S. ? Why not adopt a plug-in model where the base program is simple and closed source with a ublished plug in API, so people can add features they want without forcing them on other people. Smaller itghter programs run faster are easier to use and are less buggy/crash prone than large ones. When was the last time you had Ping or VI crash your system? MS-Word?

Come on people, Lets get with it. When was the last time you tried explaining to your teacher neighbor what Linux was, let alone how to use it? While some teachers will get it and even readily agree, the vast majority are still making the transition from Mac to Windows. If we want people to use Linux in the classroom, we need to make it "look" like windows. My best friend maintains all the computers for a small district in midwest Michigan and the only way he's ever going to get a teacher to use Linux is to tell them that he's giving them a "Better" version of windows, and not break their pirated office software and games in the process.

  6. What is the goal of the CS program of your school on Java as a CS Introductory Language? · · Score: 1

The real question is here is what the purpose of the Cs program is. Are they trying to teach a broad understanding of the way computers work, or just give a student the tools to land a programming job when they graduate? If you are trying to teach the realities of computer functionality then C is probably the best, but if the goal is simply to teach a course in OOP Java is the right choice.

The whole original point behind hyperlinks was that an author of a document could specify where they go. The only way I could see this working is if there was a mechanism by which site-authors could set and over-write the microsoft defaults for those links.

Speaking as another one who started early (wrote my first program at age 4) I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Computers are a tool, and sometimes a toy, but they don't change who the person using them is.
