I'm still a fan of Justin Frankel's handy little note taking app known as Sex. Also available for the tinfoil hat wearing crew is an encrypted version called SafeSex:)
If you check around you can find tons of old Pentium 1 and 2 class laptops people are almost willing to give away. I've done a project like this myself using an old P166mmx and it's working out great so far, plus the pcmcia slots allow for things like wireless cards instead of having PCI cards sticking out the back and the option to run it on battery power.
Old laptop + Linux + Framebuffer driver + FBI image viewer + Samba = nifty new wireless pictureframe you can just drag pictures to and watch them cycle:)
Evolution desktop? StarOffice and OOo do e-mail?

"A Linux-based open-source program called Evolution looks pretty much like a standard Windows desktop."
Hrmm, odd.. This morning when I opened Evolution it looked like a robust e-mail client:)
"StarOffice and OpenOffice provide most key features offered by Microsoft Office, including a word processor, spreadsheet, and mail program."
I'll bet that's news to Sun and OOo, last time I checked neither had any e-mail support:)
I get the impression John Schoen hasn't given the linux desktop any more than a one minute tour with a Microsoft bias in his pocket..
Hah, Looks like someone got my plugin running on Linux before I did (CJ's 3D OpenGL Plugins formerly known as Winamp3DGL & Winamp3Dfx):-)
Glad to see the XMMS team has taken the initiative to use WINE to obtain visualizations from Winamp, a great move IMHO since there's already a ton of great vis plugins available. It'll be interesting to see if Winamp 3.x for linux makes a similar move..
There's a newer version of my plugin than the 1.50 from winamp.com if you want to give the 2.0 beta a try in Linux..
Warning there's still a lot of bugs as I've been really too busy the past few years to keep it up to date.. But 2.0 will be the final release from the c codebase.
I'll be starting a new open source, c++, cross-platform plugin for winamp 3.x sometime in the next year based on a new 3D engine I'm developing..
There's a great collection of screenshots and videos up on the ign website.
Personally I can't wait for Mario Sunshine.. Mario64 was easily one of the most entertaining games I've ever played and it can only get better from there:-)

I didn't get a chance to check it out last night before I posted, the xmms-winamp plugin is by Ulrich Hecht and not the xmms team, my mistake! :-)

I may be mistaken, but doesn't Microsoft have exclusive rights for Internet-based games using the Matrix license?
