that all may be true, but that wasn't really my point. I was hoping to point out that things would be cleaner and more logical and just flow better in all kinds of different situations. Half of the stuff I did in physics or calc took at least an extra step to deal with changing the time around. If we could each save even one second on everything in our lives that involved time, we'd all have at least another month on our lives.

Mostly, it just seems natural to me that if measurement is in multiples of ten, that time should be measured accordingly.

I will die happy the day we have metric measurement in the US. I would die even happier if we could have metric time (one of the many possible standards would be fine, but I like the idea of minutes being 100 (shorter) seconds, hours being 100 (shorter) minutes, etc). The more I think about how easy Calc 3 would be if everything was in metric.. EG you have a 1000L tank of liquid draining at 10mL/minute, how long will it take to empty, in hours? Not that that particular problem is that hard to begin with, but think how much easier some of the crazy problems would be without having to worry about all the 60*60 crud? There are so many situations where metric time would make life easier- not to mention it would give a finer granularity be default.

CueCat debacle? IIRC RadioShack released a proprietary barcode reader to read proprietary advertising barcodes that were supposed to pull up related websites. IIRC the CueCat was free. People decided to hack said CueCat to get it to read plain barcodes. Radioshack gave the cuecat free because they knew theyd make money via the advertising, and somehow people decided they had a right to make it be something other than the manufacturer intended. Are you trying to say that because it was locked into reading cuecat barcodes only, that it was some sort of attempt to corral a market and/or inferior product on people?

    Is there something I missed?

FWIW: I used to drive every day, but am now only a substitute driver and do a route once a month or so- I work in IT the rest of the time.

Regarding the Nintendo DS story- the 3 lines at the bottom of the story from Nintendo invalidate the entire premise of the story- yet parents won't notice it and will either boycott the DS or potentially write Nintendo letters. While I am routinely disgusted to see the kids that ride my bus glued into these things 24-7, this story either has an ulterior motive to malign Nintendo, or is truly just misinformed and not listening to the people who would know - Nintendo. If someone is within 65 feet of your child, you've got bigger problems.

  15. Re:it could happen on Netflix Throttling Heavy Renters · · Score: 1

I work from home, about 12 hours a day. Our TV is almost constantly on in the background with something. We have a 5 disc plan and send back an average of 4 discs a week. We live in Ames and our Movies are received the next morning by 10:00a in Des Moines and we -usually- receive the next set the next day. Our mail has taken to getting shredded and broken lately, but netflix physically sends them and we can indeed verify mail problems- theyre not just late, they're cracked, or the envelope is missing, etc.

Anyway, our average hold time on a disc is about 24 hours. Due to movie release tuesdays, sometimes if you send something back friday, they get it saturday and rather than send a movie from lower in your queue, they'll wait and send the new movie on monday which we get tuesday. We like this behavior. Otherwise, 99% of the time, we do get a next-day service and we watch a-lot.

As mentioned our tv is on, watching tv or movies upwards of 12 hours (granted we're not paying 100% attention). Half of our tv-on-time is movies, and about a 1/3 of that is from our own collection of shows and what not we've bought.

But I'd consider us a heavy renter, but we're not seeing this throttling phemenon. Perhaps it applies less as you go up in plans- eg if you're going through 70% of your perceived monthly maximum (1 day turnarounds)- which moves higher as you're allowed to check out more movies at a time.

While this practice is probably true to a degree, this article is a bit of FUD seems like. Now you shouldn't have to buy a higher package to get better service if they're billed as the same 1-day turnaround. Perhaps they just need to say the 3 disc plan is only guaranteeing 2 or 3 day turnaround (if you get better than that, fine) and let people naturally percolate into better paid accounts and the people that dont care when the movies get there will just stick around. IMHO, tiered service is completely ethical and in line with supply and demand- as long as it's marketed accurately, which the current scheme really isnt.
