The observatory will be open to the public on Friday, October 28th at 8:00pm weather permitting. Venus shines brightly in the west-southwest just before sunset. It's second in brightness only to the moon after sunset. After night falls, you'll find Mars rising in the east. Mars is closest to Earth this week and next! It's shining brilliantly at magnitude -2.2 in Aries near the Taurus border. It rises fiery yellow-orange in the east-northeast in twilight, blazes high in the eastern sky by 10 p.m., and moves over to the west by dawn. And it's rising earlier every day. In a telescope Mars is 20 arcseconds wide. For a couple of weeks it remains essentially as large as when at its very closest on the night of October 29th. Check out recent amateur images of the planet including its dust storm here: http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/objects/plane ts/article_1612_1.asp
The SFA Observatory's viewing sessions are intended for visitors of all ages and are free of charge. Since these are outdoor events, poor weather conditions may force a cancellation. The current weather report can be found here. To reach the SFA Observatory dial 936-569-0102 and for maps and directions http://www.physics.sfasu.edu/observatory/tour_form .html. We have free SFA Star Charts that you can download and print http://members.cox.net/astro7/SFAStarCharts.html. To see what's up in the sky see this Week's Sky at a Glance.
For larger groups please email me in advance so that I can have additional help available. In addition to our public viewing session at the SFA Observatory you may also want to attend a planetarium show on a Friday night. ...construct and successfully test 'Aggie Solar Death Ray' on jet-skis, and ski-boats.
October 22, 2005 College Station, Texas (AP) By Spock the Baptist (The Fishing Physicist)
This weekend members of the Texas A&M Bass Club struck a blow for bass fishermen everywhere, when they successfully tested a solar death ray based on the 'myth' of Archimedes' death ray. The 'Aggie Solar Death Ray' targeted three different models of jet-skis, and two models of ski-boats and summarily destroyed them.
Upon hearing of the highly successful test Ray Scott, and Forest Wood held a joint press conference to reveal that they had contracted with the "Bassin' Aggies" to market the device through Bass Pro Shops to bass anglers the world over. This was immediately followed by a ring endorsement of the National Outdoor Writers Guild in a press statement. The Guild statement concluded that the 'Aggie Ray' was the greatest advance in fishing in the past half century.
Numerious stock analysts rated all stock related to the new invention an enthustic 'put up your kids for collateral!' investment.

4 hours a day. This is likely to include TV as background noise. How many people fall asleep while 'watching' TV at night? How long will the TV be on until said person wakes and turns it off.
It's already been done. It was called the Pong Show......oh wait!?!
Never mind...

Impassioned lovers wrestle as one; Lonely man cries for love and has none; New mother picks up and suckles her son; Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight, Red is grey is yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion
I find the whole red vs. blue thing amusing. For years the GOP was blue, and the Demos were red, you know red as in left wing. See: Dave Leip's Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections, http://uselectionatlas.org/ "Note, this site uses Blue for Republicans and Red for Democrats. I know that most media outlets have adopted the opposite color key in recent years. However, due to the sheer volume of maps on this site, changing them to match the media's recent color choices requires a significant investment in time (I started creating the maps 11 years ago!). Please also note that the colors are just a key to the maps on this site. I could have just as easily chosen green and orange."
I was in favor of using Gore Grey, and Bush Brown for the 2000 election. Earth Tones are so much more stylish than boring blue, and routine red.
HiThere, you and morgawr are not from Texas are y'all.
We've got a real problem here in the Lone Star State with public school funding. Our Supreme Court has declared that local funding in unconstitutional under the Texas Constitution. The reason being that due to differences in the value of the local tax bases there is inequitable funding between 'rich' and 'poor' school districts, which in turn leads to an inequitable quality of education between the 'rich' and 'poor' school districts.
For the last decade the Texas Legislature has wrestled with, and gone through all manner of contortions to resolve the funding 'problem', with no solution that even comes close to being reasonably satisfactory. The realpolitik in Texas is such that a even a workable solution, that some major segment of the Texas Body Politic won't fiercely object to, is highly unlikely.

Now for a new project for the Mech E Srs. at MIT. Using the SolarDeathRay construct a robotic solar welder.
Bingo!!!
Mod parent up! He hit the proverbial nail squarely on the head...
Not to mention electric fences...

Halo becoming a movie was inevitable. That was obvious ever since Bungie previewed Halo at MacWorld some years ago.
So instead we'll eat at Burger King, Dairy Queen, Taco Palace, The Royal Pagoda, White Castle, or some other aristocratic dinning establishment?

What metric will they use to determine if the world has cooled or warmed?
