    If nothing else:
    -look up options to replace the battery
    -there must be some kind of warrantee, use it once the 'take it back' option is expired (15-31 days from now)
    -do nothing and just resign yourself to tethering it to some power source (external battery or outlet - wait, you can actually plug the things in, right?)

    I'd get one. It'll work as intended now. Once that gets outdated, there's always slapping some linux/unix on it. I bet the cheapness and sudden sell out of these will lend to OSS support/projects.

    I'd say "just teach them python", but that assumes some decent IDE exists out there to help kids make GUI driven scripts (for free).

    Eclipse, I think, is one option...

    In general, though, I'm glad I got over my almost decade-long prejudice against scripting languages.

    Pretty sure it was the ancient greeks, anyway. They would have a chorus sing the outline of the story before the actual telling. IRRC, that's how Homer's poems start (in an academic/'good' translation).

    I dig python. I chose python + sqlite to clean data instead of excel and vba.

    1.) It's free (speech/beer)
    2.) It's multiplatform
    3.) It runs on my freebsd machine as easily as on my mac desktop
    4.) I can use a sqlite database exactly like a postgresql or mysql db in the python api (handy).
    5.) It added a line to my resume!
    etc etc

    I hope to never use python as a web designer (because I don't want to be a web dev - no offense). But, I definitely appreciate its generality.

    I think he wanted her to sort, add, and manipulate her figures in their binary representations, directly.

    Having said that, I'd be all for teaching kids Python, R, and SQLite. (They may or may not understand it until after their bachelor's work in math/CS, how ever.)

    Graduate students have always been the abused 'subjects' of their professoritti-elite, but man that's just downright mean.

    Stuff like this often makes me decide to drive instead of fly. Supposedly, a train ride is a good substitute for a plane trip as well.

    I think we're talking about the entertainment channel and not the propaganda/entertainment channel. Like you, I'm hoping Degrasse Tyson properly 'informs' the show. If it's one thing our society needs it's a good, strong shot-in-the-arm of scientific appreciation.

    If you're referring to the Republican-created financial crisis we just narrowly averted, well, I rest my point. Oh, and I suggest we immediately revert all taxes to pre-Bush rates. Clinton must have had spending and revenue correct since he had us headed for a surplus.

    Yes, and discovering the liquid state of water in an otherwise extreme environment (such as the surface of Mars) increases our expectations.

    Ha! It's in the US, it's good for US stability! Sheesh, like the primary concern of the US is strictly the world at large. I'm a liberal and a citizen of the world (as much as anyone else), but let's be honest here.

    The US is rich in natural resources. Yes, the jobs may go overseas - but our mineral deposits, forests, fisheries, energy resources (coal, to name 1), and all the other things I'm forgetting to mention - will stay here. (Assuming we don't let our international trade policy to become lopsided against our general well being.)
