    In some countries judges are elected. Having a "rubber stamper" reputation isn't going to help them be re-elected. For those who have nominated judges, the process is similar except you have to go a little higher up the political chain. In Russia, all bets are off.

    Agreed. I think some Information Management folks got brained washed into thinking tags/metadata is important. Why have information about information when you can get directly to the information itself using search tools? Tags might be fun but they're not that useful. Thanks for helping me make up my mind about them.

    I never heard of it as such but it is rather evident, with swimming being even purer.

    Those dead trees, when exploited reasonably like they are in Canada, are a renewable resource and generate employment. They are also very useful when starting a fireplace fires.

    Well, I would say, in general, devices with solid state components have good longevity. In terms of support, I expect it will be easier for the school to get a maintenance contract with Apple to swap a defective iPad or a broken iPad at a fixed cost than they could from a Taiwanese company with a no name product.

    But they both run Windows and are both made by Microsoft hence all the confusion. Using the name Windows as a selling point for different products that don't work the same is very short sighted. Microsoft could do so much better.

    There were delays in laying out the fibre but once they were shown all the pr0n they could get with 1gb, it motivated those workers to get it done quickly.

    Well at least iPads have a future. As a tax payer, I see this as a wiser investment than purchasing unproved hardware made by an unproven hardware manufacturer.

    I think it's fair to assume, given past efforts, that not all 10,000 changes are typos. I expect this to be a fairly important upgrade and that it will allow better compatibility. Wine is not perfect but when it works, it's extremely handy.

  21. You can always dictate. Newer devices are pretty good at understanding what you're saying. For the rest, there's always good old full sized computer with a full size screen. In portrait mode of course.

    About that Microsoft tablet, they tried to make it (but not entirely) something it can't be. Tim Cook was right when he said it was a compromised and confusing product.

    BES supports iOS and Android. Doesn't look like it requires third party software.

    The book Rare Earth dwells into the possibility we're in fact quite exceptional. I've seen plenty of debate regarding some of the statements and conclusions drawn by the authors but nonetheless, "intelligent" life seems a lot less common than expected. That being said, we're improving our "life detection" skills and it might be possible, in a few years, to actually "scan" a planet from earth and detect elements, through spectrum analysis, which point to evidence of life.

    Interesting. So if one of these neutrinos hits me, will I feel it? I understand due to electroweak unification (of these very high energy neutrinos) it will cause interaction with our body.
