Running symetrical multiple sound cards under any version of Windows or Linux is hell, I speak from experience. Although a Linux driver actually cured a cross channel hum problem I couldn't eliminate with Windows software and two SB 32s.
I have run two Sb 32 awe's with some success back when Creative actually spent some real money on it's audio designs. However the ever present 128 live version and up craps big ones. I made the mistake of upgrading, the good old 32 awe's are now back and doing the job! (I use my PC to quickly do audio recording of musical ideas I write/play, then I mix my composed parts to check my harmonies. I also have found that recording music snipets to harddrive is a good way to preserve new musical ideas and time stamp them).
I have an older asus p3 dual slot-one mother board with Pci and Isa slots and the sound is not too bad if you are not interested in high quality audio like 24/96 and up digital recording.
Signal to noise is no problem for audio companies anymore, the average "music consumer" can't tell the difference anyway. The new cheap crap I've heard with p4 and newer Sb cards is not even close in quality to the older expensive hardware.
My advice to you, if you are an audiofile, is not to use crap PC sound cards at all. Their drivers suck, their sig to noise ratios really suck on their line outs. Worse, the digital out is prone to interference interupts from within the PC, (emr caused by fans, cheap drives etc). The PC sound card is the biggest (P)iece of (C)rap ever to polute the world of music. Use real audio devices not crappy, hyped up toys like PC sound cards!
It is good to see some economic sense begin to finally happen about what can be done with so-called outdated hardware.

These are two old comments that I made about the inportance of Mars exploration. please read;
'why even bother?' ( a post ) from an article about the Chinese moon shot.
"mining materials from the moon is going to be more expensive than raiding Western Russia and mining in Siberia then shipping it back to China.
It's expensive to live there, to ship people there, and to experiment there (what to experiment on I will never know).
I can't see a financial justification to use it as a start point for Mars missions when there is nothing of use on Mars (even if there is water and "life").
Let's have our people suffer and wither away in the wastelands of undeveloped China and build a moon base!"
My response to the post
Give me an economic justification for war, and then I might go along with your statement. The first casualties of war are usually not modern American economic theorists, though this might be a good thing.
Bullshit to your economics. Give us an economic explanation of the pyramids all around the world or European middle age cathedrals.
There is every economic justification for non-productive space exploration, it would employ millions and do no harm. Can we really justify our so-called western lifestyle? (I gag when I use the canned, mindless advertising word lifestyle)
The biggest burden on our technical, social, scientific and economic advancement in the West is our obsession and reliance on the personal automobile. It is outdated and needs replacement. It was important but like the horse it fouls our streets and costs us far too much in resources.
The Chinese have been spared the automobile obsession by economic necessity. As they open their society and discover their true value as a people, they will over take the West in all fields of scientific, technical and human social endeavour within the next decade.
As the first people to use fireworks in a non-destructive way, maybe that is what they have in mind. When you set off a nuclear explosion 40 or 50 thousand miles out in space all you get is one hell of a big flash. It is the use of nuclear technology within our atmosphere that is the real cause for concern.
And
The Reason for Going to Mars
There was flowing water on Mars. Was there once an atmosphere similar to Earth? These questions beg definitive answers. The existence of some form of clustering goo with DNA would be the greatest scientific discovery of all time. If some form of life were found on Mars then the genetic study of that life would be crucial to our understanding of life, at least within our Solar System. There is the real possibility that life on Earth is genetically linked to something greater than Terra genesis.
Much of our common legends state exactly this possibility (Greek legends of Gods, Assyrian legends). These legends are so powerful that they became religions.
In short discovering that life originated off world would be the great
"Can any lawyer indicate how, under US law, this might be brought to a quick conclusion if IBM has no real case to answer? How quickly?"
As long as the Lawyers are laughing all the way to the bank. You cannot count on a quick resolution. Thats the American way.
An all together different result might first come from a simple technology shift.
For example;
If some smart, innovative company embeds a linux or bsd based os on an add-on card with lots of chips a PC revolution to rival the heady days of the late 1980's might happen.
Wouldn't it be great if you could choose not to boot a harddrive os, or boot from a drive if you must have windoze? All it would take is cooperation from some bios writers like phoenix and award to make it roll.
If Sco was a real software and innovative company then this is the kind of innovation they would be looking into. From what I am reading the real thing Sco is trying to obscure is their bottom line. The longer they can keep the financial world in the dark then the better the chance that IBM will just buy them out to shut them up. Too bad IBM is a badly bruised dinosaur (in large part by Bill Gates and Co.) and will not venture back into the PC market with something like this idea first.
Remember how nice it was to not have to worry about harddrive failure, viruses or system check garbage when you turned on your computer? Wow even Norton Utilities would not be needed anymore. Get a virus or trojan, who cares? just install your ms backup with your permanent OS. But I am dreaming.
For far too long companies like SCO, IBM, Microsoft and their ill begotten hardware partners have held back simple innovations like this.
Selling or distributing any product in Canada is a funny thing to try to do in Quebec. The Quebec, Office De Lingue Francais or the language police (as the rest of Canada calls them), have most likely given MS shit for ignoring language laws on their software packaging.
If the MS eula is not distributed en Francais, then some smart French Canadien could dispute it, and would no dought win. You cannot even sell Corn Flakes in Canada without French on them. Of course I have never eaten Frenched corn flakes so I do not know how French on them tastes. However, my wife is French and she tastes great!
The idea of a different distro for every user is not as far fetched as one might think. If the os install process could itself be forked! I personally use several different linux and bsd installs to do different things, on my Slack, I use gcc, make, etc, on Redhat I use office software. On BSD I use file manipulation with Vi, and take care of all my disks and do the dd nasties. Booting multiple stripped down operating systems is great, the speed for purpose advantage is considerable.
Gentoo is just another bunch of hackers wanting to make money. Just like Bill Gates and co was at one time. As to windows working, it only works because its best code was bought or cloned from real programmers, who for the most part learned to code UNIX or something else first just like Gates did. Microsoft cannot even claim the copyright to the use of the word Windows to refer to its own os.
As long as there is a Darwinian natural selection aspect to software, ie; vapour ware is the norm, then the best will survive. Look to the rapid adoption of Linux outside the USA. The only conclusion is that the more distros of an os the better. For that matter the more operating systems likewise.
The hardware driver monopoly of MS is slowly coming to an end. As it does the truth about how shitty win XP really is will finally come out in public. If Gentoo survives to grab a piece of the action then it will make reasonable money.
The get rich quick days of writing crappy leaky spaghetti code ware and hole ridden firmware for Microsoft, then making millions selling it to braindead users are over. Thanks to GNU, Linux, and BSD.
Right on! my old pc runs win98, linux and bsd just fine. I spend my cash on things like seeking large Rainbow Trout, with a traveler sedge, or choronamid. Much more rewarding than buying a p4 to find that windows xp sucks and doesn't flyfish worth a damn.

Main frames are dinosaur bait! Most companies, hospitals etc, are looking for short term plug in modules that can have failure redundancy. Having robust switching technology is more important than the server, or individual work stations. To this end sensible firms spend most of their IT cap on good non-braindead switching hardware.
Cheap disposable work station and servers are the way of the future. The days of spending millions on software licenses and proprietary server tech are numbered, thanks to free software.
"Unfortunately, Japanese regulations don't allow for the system to fully stop the vehicle."
Not to worry trees can do the job.
Being from northern Canada gives one a different perspective. Just try an automatic breaking system on our roads in the winter. The results would be very interesting indeed. The last device one uses to control a car on ice or mud roads is the breaks.
What is open source? It is a natural response to proprietary hardware. The history of pc hardware has driven the move to open source. The real reason open source is common now is that to run a Unix like os on a cheap disposable pc is important to any computer science student.
Just try to use MS academic licenced compilers and you will understand the difference. With open source you get to see and learn how base c libraries really work. Far better for learning than the hidden binaries necessary for closed source computing.
Even the Microserfs use open source to learn how things work. Working for Microsoft is like working for the CIA, you are only allowed to see the source segments you are working on.
"(e.g. drug, alcohol, weapons and traffic enforcement)"
Err... what the hell, why not have no enforcement of any petty laws. The very fact that alot of people drive their vehicles like a weapon proves the unfortunate necessity of sane traffic laws.
Go live in East L.A., then you can make statements about cops wasting their time on foolishness like weapons enforcement. Just remember to use bullit proof glass on your car and house! I also suggest cutting off your middle fingers if you want to survive on the freeway.
With the recent economic/cultural decline in Symphonic music societies and the lack of good corporate and government support for our musical cultural heritage. Open Source software for this purpose is becoming all the more crucial.
Who will become the corporate owners of the rights to most of the Thomas Beacham, George Szell, Stravinsky, Bernstien, Glen Gould and similar great recordings? A monetary capital based nuthouse crap game will be what happens. Recent economic history is an indication to the nature of things in North American style corporate finance. Recording/entertainment giants like Sony are in dire financial straits and on very shakey ground.
To whom will they sell the digital rights to gain capital? Some Microsoft, or the likes, shake and bake instant billionaire? 'I certainly hope not', or have they already?
Can we trust them to preserve this important resource for our children, or is there anybody sane left with the means who cares?
Scary stuff and definately possible.
I can picture a day when obtaining a recording of this caliber will require a Palladium based computer and huge bank account! Fortunately I still own some well cared for LPs of these wonderful things. They are getting really hard to find in cd/music stores, or even order any more.
If you remember and are old enough, some of the great company labels of the 1950s-60s-70s were; London-Angle, DGG Archive, Columbia, Philips, Telarc, etc etc.
I personally have never ripped or stolen by download then burned anything yet, or even ripped my LPs OR cds. I am now slowly becoming convinced that this might be the only solution for a sane and ethical classical music lover!
ya, i here you. the drug money problems are still going on in central america and south america also. its just that the current admin in the states has side showed the real trouble because coke has become too big and runs alot of the polit now. i am sure that alot of financing of koreas nukes and tech comes from laundered drug money also.
americans have got to stop driving around in an suv while they are snorting our future out the windows, pun intended, or the situation will get out of hand.
please excuse the lack of caps my old dell key board is starting to bite the dust.
After US vs Iraq 2 you can now drive your monster suv to the cornerstore to get your booze. Then go home and bitch about things on Slashdot a little cheaper thanks to Sir George Bush and Co. Cyber war with the Chinese is about as stupid as driving an SUV in town.
People living in the Orient want peace and International brotherhood/sisterhood as much as any other sane group of human beings. Not some abstract political shit like communism. We would kick those commie nukes butts! Nothing to worry about we use Microsoft servers, those dumb stupid unix commies can't do visual studio worth shit.
Got to be a mindless bot to say something like that about a real issue unless parent is actually a descendant! Which post came first the chicken or the shit.

Richard Stollman is right about software. FROM my comments about the SCO thing;
"Just a parting thought about the whole sco vs the world thing.
The reason why Microsoft bought a Unix license is not the fact that ifconfig, etc etc sounds terribly close to ipconfig etc, etc, etc ad infinitum?
If this is the case then we all might need to bow our heads to Redmond and keep our collective mouths shut for eternity!
Richard Stallman is only a voice in the Gnu wilderness, but he is right.
Giving the exclusive rights to digital communication technology to one small consortium is as bad as the Spanish Inquisition of all printed material by a Gutenberg press. Then trying to enforce an exclusive control of all printed and sold documents for ever! Just look how that ruined the beauty and glory of Renaissance Spain! The monopoly cannot be allowed to happen, or we are headed for an era that will make Orwells 1984 look like a Baptist Church picnic during a rainstorm."
The scary thing is that we are not as far away from a corporate run police state ourselves, if things are allowed to get out of hand!

As long as there is a Darwinian natural selection aspect to software,
ie; vapour ware is the norm, then the best will survive.
If you remember and are old enough, some of the great company labels of the 1950s-60s-70s were;
London-Angle, DGG Archive, Columbia, Philips, Telarc, etc etc.
/who wants to be a millionaire /consumerism.
People living in the Orient want peace and International brotherhood/sisterhood
as much as any other sane group of human beings. Not some abstract political shit like communism. Or; what was American enlightened self interest. Now become, get ahead of the Jones/ at all environmental cost
I am an old time hippie idealist, and hope to die happy with my ideals rather than sit around watching the mushroom clouds bloom on CNN till one hits home.
Ps, a flamer for your eyes;
Boy the advertising and network rights to that show could be worth about 6,000,000,000 or about a buck a person world wide. Might even pull in more than the big Eyerac (Iraq) show did. We would kick those commie nukes butts! Nothing to worry about we use Microsoft servers, those dumb stupid unix commies can't do visual studio worth shit.
What would be really a scream is that if the parent post to this came from Bill Gates as an Anonymous
Coward!
Got to be a mindless bot to say something like that about a real issue unless parent is actually a descendant!
Which post came first the chicken or the shit.
Although I completely agree with your statement;
...to keep tabs on their own people!"
" The true purpose of such a North Korea group might actually be to train their gurus with the latest and greatest information...
Richard Stollman is right about software. FROM my comments about the SCO thing;
The scary thing is that we are not as far away from a corporate run police state ourselves, if things are allowed to get out of hand!
the rat is well regarded in Japan it is the sign of a good harvest.
