I have been using RAIDFrame under OpenBSD for about 2 years now. Never had any issues. From dmesg:
wd1 at pciide1 channel 0 drive 0: wd1: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 156334MB, 320173056 sectors wd2 at pciide1 channel 0 drive 1: wd2: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 156334MB, 320173056 sectors wd1(pciide1:0:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 wd2(pciide1:0:1): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 pciide1: channel 1 configured to native-PCI mode wd3 at pciide1 channel 1 drive 0: wd3: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 156334MB, 320173056 sectors wd4 at pciide1 channel 1 drive 1: wd4: 16-sector PIO, LBA48, 156334MB, 320173056 sectors wd3(pciide1:1:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 wd4(pciide1:1:1): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 Kernelized RAIDframe activated raid5 (root): (RAID Level 5) total number of sectors is 960429504 (468959 MB)
The setup is very simple.
# cat/etc/raid5.conf START array 1 4 0
START disks/dev/wd0a/dev/wd1a/dev/wd2a/dev/wd3a
START layout 32 1 1 5
START queue fifo 100
It has been quite stable. The box is a 1Ghz AMD with 256MB of ram.
I tried running the same setup under Linux (Gentoo & Slackware). The software RAID would crack under load and fail a disk. I really would give OpenBSD a try with RAIDFrame. You have to recompile the default kernel with RAID suppot but under BSD it is very simple. CVS the source down and:
cd/usr/src/sys/arch/$ARCH/conf cp GENERIC RAID
vi RAID and add:
pseudo-device raid 9 # RAIDframe disk driver (Make the number, 9 in this case one more then the number of disc you are using)
option RAID_AUTOCONFIG
save the file and:
config RAID
cd../complie/RAID make clean; make depend; make cp/bsd/bsd.old cp bsd/bsd
and reboot.
Then just read the main pages for raidctl to see how to set it up (hint: look at my raid5.conf above).
OK, I am not a big Bush fan but we really need to get the facts right on the Halliburton thing:
1. While thier contract is for billions of dollars, the profit, which is what counts, is only going to be 1-2% at best. This is a very very low margin for their normal operations (10-40%) and they are thinking about getting out because it is not worth it. Any idea that they are makes billions is bull-shit. Profit is a measure of the money you have left after the contract, not the size of the contract.
2. Over 48 Halliburtion employees have died in Iraq. 124+ have been wounded.
3. KBR, the sub of Halliburtion, that is doing the work in Iraq lost millions of dollars last quater. They are not expected to make a profit in Iraq.
4. Being that the VP was CEO of Halliburtion it puts them under the microscope and in the end is bad for biz. Having the VP was not helpfull to them.
While Halliburtion may have: screwed up paperwork (normal for a goverment contract) and done some stupid things to assume there is some sort of prid pro quo on this is just stupid. Halliburtion was the largest companys in this field and it is no suprize they got the contract when it was a no-bid contract. The use of non-bid contracts from the goverment in a rush (ie war or emergancy) is a historical fact in US history. If anything Halliburtion is guilty of being to stupid to know that because of the no-bid and VP that they should have handled things differently.
We cannot negotiate the little runt out of power. So what do you suggest we do?
Let look at this in terms of deaths. I full scale invasion of the North would kill millions of people in both the north and the south. Any build up of troop would start the war before we were ready and the SK capital would be toast in about 5 mins from the start of the war. A few small nukes on the NK army troops and the capitol area were the little runt is would kill under 1 million, mostly soldiers (the enforcement arm of the runt). Now since over 1 million NK DIED OF STARVATION in the last 2 year and another 1 million will DIE OF STARVATION AND BECAUSE OF THE GOVERNMENT CAMPS in the next few years a few 100,000 people, most being in the military, seems to be the lesser of the two evils.
You see, you just don't get it. You do not talk to dictators and mass murders. You cut off their head. It will be a sad thing that any civilian gets killed, and I will cry for each one of them. Price in human lives in letting people like Kim stay in power is much greater then the price of doing something about it.
I think we as lost the lesson of WWII in our rush to be at peace no matter what the cost. The only way there will be peace is if the people of the world stand up and fight to rid ourselves of all tyrants, no matter what personal cost. This applies to NK as well as doing the right thing in the Sudan (sending in troops to protect those lives) and what we should have done in Rwanda (but did not because we were to busy talking about it). While we debate and negotiate people are being slaughtered.
People today have a very very bad understanding of nuclear weapons. The US has 'clean jacket' nukes that leave little fallout. The reason for this was that they were designed to be used on a battle field that US and NATO troop would walk thru hours after the weapon was set off. The fallout from a few small nukes on NK millitary targets would be much less then you think. Whats the reality here? I mean if there was ever a way in NK the US would use nukes in the 1st day. NK has a 1 million man army on the boarder with SK.
Remember, there is no such thing as an inhuman weapon. It is a weapon. Its job is to kill the bad guy in the quickest fastest means that you can! The is no difference between a SMALL nuke and a flight of B-52 full of 100's of 2000lb bombs.
So tell me? Should we give a county aid that because it uses all it has to keep 1 million people in the army? Why should we prop up a failed system that wants to destory us and kills its own people. Over a million people died in NK in the last few years becaue they did not get enought to eat and it is their GOVERMENTS fault. I do not make any deals with the devil.
I used to think that you could reason with people. That you could talk things out. Then I saw what the Iraq soliders did to the people in Kuwait. I saw what they did to the children. I saw a body strapped to a metal bed with the car battery sitting next to it. I have seen what the rebels in Columba did to the women and children in the villages. I do not believe in god, but I sure hope there is a hell!
I got my mother an iMac in Xmas of 2002 and have never had any issues. Never a phone call, never a crash. It patches itself. (OK I did upgrade it to Panther, and boy was it hard. I had to put the CD in and click a few times..!). So I do not get it whats the big deal...oh, your parents are running Windows? Poor slob!
You do not know what you are doing then. I have a link that is 3km running 802.11b with Smartbridges and 14 dBi backfires that is rock solid. I also have a few 8+km links using 5.3/5.8. Oh, I have 28 other 802.11b networks that are rock solid and have been running over a year.
I am going to say this once and I am not going to respond to anyone. I still keeps me awake at night.
I was in the US Army durining the 1st gulf war.
We went in to Kuwait City early. As the Iraq Army was leaving. There was this orphanage. The soldiers had raped all the girls. Some as young as 8. They killed the workers from the Red Cresent that were there. There was this room in the hotel in downtown. There was a bed frame - metal. On it was a body of a man. Next to it was a bucket of water and a set of car batteries. We found over 50 people that had be killed like that.
I hope Sadam burns in hell.
I believe that peace is a noble cause and I wish that I still can still be as idealist as the rest that are outraged by this war. But I cannot. You seeI have seen the evil that men can do. The only way to a true and lasting peace is for good men to take a stand and fight evil when it appears - period.
Darwin is, IIRC, 64-bit clean. As a newly converted Mac-Head I am looking forward to Apple moving to these chips. I will buy a new system and put it next to my Dual-G4 and my NeXTCube.
FYI:
Oh, I submitted this story with 3 links yesterday in the afternoon but it was REJECTED. I never will understand how they pick what goes up.
GNUStep? Who gives a shit? I mean, hell they are the only people that are slower then Debian about getting things out. Oh, lets not forget that GNUStep ideas (OO, etc..) comes from NeXTStep which hum, funny enough is what OS X is built on.
All I know is the Civ3 with a hugh map on an AMD 2100+ w/512 DDR crawls. I would be really happy for any CPU that can make a turn at the tail end of the game (4 players, 300+ cities, 1000's of units) take less then the 10 mins. it takes to churn thru now! Who give a damn about datebases, or weather sims, or data, et. al. - make my game run faster! (Note: This is scarcasim.)
Is it just me or were computers more fun before, Bill(sarcism) OpenSourced the BIOS!
I hate to get off on a rant here but...
I mean I miss going into the Software, Etc. and asking for Ultima 4 and being asked, for C64, Apple, IBM, Atari or Amiga? I miss Compute! and all the other great magazines that went with the times! I loved seeing the new and interesting hardware that came out everyday for these systems. I love the small hack! 64K not 64MB (and 64MB isa video card now!) Hell, there are no good programers today that can compare with the hacks of earlier days. Linux and Windows are both blotware when compaired with the AmigaOS! I have a Commodore 128D on my desk next to my Mac and PC and let me tell you the games on it are still better then the newest stuff. I don't know but, PC's today lack soul.
But thats just my opinion. I could be wrong! (GRIN!)
All these problems with the USA from a man from a country that sat on it ass and let 6 million Jews be slaughter, all the while taking thier money which still have not given back to this day!

Just becasue your people are taken in by this 'sophisticated better spoken nazis' does not give you the right to impose your will on us. Maybe you should be looking at the root cause of your ignorance and leave us out of it. We understand true freedom. Coming from a area that has never had enough self identity to ever truly understand freedom I am not suprised by your comments.
Just a few thought on 6.2 on OS X.1. (I am running a Dual 533 with 768MB RAM).
First I am wondering is does anyone know if 6.2 for OS X is based on the Fizilla build (OS X native) or the OS 9.X carbon build?
One of the things that I have noticed is that it does not respect the Mac standards. For example the 'preferences' menu item is in the wrong place. Also it does not seem to read the Mac network settings to get its proxy info.
I have tried to build Fizilla on OS X but so far have been out of luck. Still working on it tho..
As far as it goes compaired with IE on OS X - both pretty much are the same once running. IE loads alot faster. The web pages render in the same time on both. Both looked hacked and non-OS X like in fonts and the look and feel is not right. Omniweb is the cleanest and fastest browser for OS X at this point. I just wish it was alittle more stable.
I am downloading 6.2 for a Windows 98 (P133, 64MB) right now. I will see how it is. IE is dog slow on it (5.5). I will post a follow up with the results.
AT&T is not suffering from major problems 'stemming from the breakup'. AT&T's problem is that their management sucks and always has. Being a monopoly did not require good management. With the network, technology and number of patents that AT&T has it should be doing well, except for the fact that it has been managed by a group of total smegheads since the breakup.

after years of programing I have come to the following:

Hum. Not so true. My MB ML430 needs 91 octane. The sticker say so...(oh and it runs like shit and backfires a ton on anything less.)
IE and Opera are not NATIVE OS X. Go to www.omnigroup.com and grab the latest OmniWeb beta. Works great here.

Just MNSHO..
I like Solaris, but only on Sun hardware. The x86 version is a pig, IMNSHO. BTW, I am writing this on my Ultra 10 ;)
