  2. Image-based addressing on Universal Alphanumeric Postal Code Proposed · · Score: 1

I would like to be able to create an image, say 2" x 3", and have the image be accepted as a substitute for my post office address. My image would be registered with the USPS such that mail bearing the image would be scanned and delivered to the nine digit zip code address corresponding to that image in the USPS database. Even a low-resolution scan of such images would consist of a large number of bits, enough so that few images submitted to the USPS would be duplicates. The USPS would make money selling image registrations.

  3. Not fair use, originality on Copying Graphics - What is Fair Use? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Before you get to the question of what constitutes "fair use," the first step in the copyright law analysis is whether the work that was copied is sufficiently original, in other words a work of authorship, otherwise there is no copyright protection. While copying artwork willy-nilly from the Internet is usually an invitation to be sued, copying a drawing of a mere wastebasket might not be. The trivial case would be copying a drawing of a square or a circle. Neither is copyrightable subject matter. But elaborate on the circle by adding two more circles for ears and a couple of three-fingered hands, and you have Mickey Mouse (or Chuck E. Cheese, I forget which).

Right on. It was exactly like watching a David Lynch picture like Twin Peaks, in that you think, maybe at the end of all this Artistic Footage there will emerge an Artistic Vision or even a Plot. Then you sit all the way through to the end, and it ain't there... just two basic scenes repeated, 1) a guy in a bell-bottomed Nehru jacket does karate with a bunch of FBI agent types; intercut with 2) a sci-fi world where they have spaceships, but everybody lives in caves and carries torches 'cause they don't have flashlights.

Here is a challenge for some of you: If you visit any nursing home, the hallways are lined with lonely people. You see so many nursing home residents who would do anything for a little attention or human contact. There should be a linux-based videophone box that would be ultra-simple such that any nursing home resident (or other stay-at-home) could plug it into a cable modem, and instantly be connected to a real-time chat group of four or five randomly selected other people to whom one could talk -- and whose pictures would be displayed. There could be filtering features like clique formation and localization (find people near you). Obviously such a device and service would be useful for others, everything from computer dating to investment clubs to soccer team formation. Call it Socialnet.

I sue insurance companies' insureds on behalf of plaintiffs, and I've seen some honest people with good claims who were victimized by insurance company dishonesty.

So I have a low general opinion of insurance companies, to put it mildly, and I wouldn't put it past 'em to mess with a digital image or two if the stakes were high enough.

You say you don't trust plaintiff's lawyers either, more power to you. I pray they never let in digital images where authenticity is contested and the photo is crucial in deciding the case. It is just too easy to doctor them.

Unfortunately, I fear many judges will routinely let in digital photos just like they often let in "computer evidence" in the form of printouts, etc. For information on how digital image evidence is treated in the courts, see Rules 901 and 1001 through 1004 of the Federal Rules of Evidence.

  14. Save the electrons on Validity of Web-Forms-Based Advocacy Questioned · · Score: 1

One might criticize the Forest Service, but look at it this way. Every time someone sends an e-mail, this uses valuable electrons which have to be generated by coal-fueled electrical generating plants. Coal is made out of wood. The less electricity that people use, the less coal you have to burn; this in turn lessens the demand for trees. Thus, by sending e-mail petitions, you are actually killing trees. Shame on you.

First of all, why assume you need to -buy- 12 wireless mics when your application may only require that you -rent- them. Next, forget about 802.11 and VOIP. This is a job for a competent sound man. Your wireless mics should have "diversity reception." This means there are two receiving antennae per mic, this will eliminate annoying, noisy dropouts caused by radio frequency wave reflection -- if the signal drops out at one antenna the circuitry will flawlessly switch to the audio from the other antenna. Manufacturers of wireless diversity mics include Nady Systems and Cetec Vega. You might be able to find some of their products on eBay. As far as recording, you need to buy or rent, yes, a 12-track recorder. Find someone who knows the field of wireless, such as a ham radio operator. Consult a pro audio store in your nearest large city. Don't forget to use fresh batteries in your wireless mics.

They are a scam. Salespeople are under incredible pressure to sell them -- try telling the salesperson you don't want one! They will beg and plead with you and ask you "why" -- they have to put down a reason. Say, "I just don't want one." They will go nuts. The so-called "extended warranty" is way overpriced and full of loopholes and exclusions. They are a major profit center for the big consumer electronics chains of this world. Most products already come with manufacturers' warranties -- the product will either fail within the original mfr's warranty period or it will outlast the "extended" period. And if someone dumb, like your grandma, buys an "extended warranty," good luck finding the sales receipt or other information -- most of us aren't that well organized.
