Read the article, it was the image uploading ActiveX control that got exploited. Chances are that people who uploaded images recently and ran Internet Explorer that used the ActiveX control might have gotten their password and personal information stolen. Those Windows users who use Firefox should know that Firefox does not support ActiveX controls unless the user installed an ActiveX Plugin that allows limited ActiveX controls to be used. If the user did not install the ActiveX Plugin, I seriously doubt they got hit with this exploit if they used Firefox.
Linux, Macintosh, BSD Unix, and Non-Windows systems do not support ActiveX controls anyway so it is mostly Windows systems that are effected by the exploit, and only Windows users who use Internet Explorer and not those who use Firefox.
I am guessing that a lot of 12 to 24 year olds that have their own credit card or their parent's credit card or bank account or somehow work an have their own bank account are the ones targeted by this, as people aged 12 to 24 are most likely to use Windows with Internet Explorer and not know about the exploits out there, and just surf and click on anything they want.
A lot of family members and friends have children aged within that range who use their family's computer and after it gets so infected with malware that they cannot use it, they call me to come over and fix it for them. Nope, Linux, BSD Unix, or switching to a Mac is not an option for them, in some cases I switched them to Linux only to have them make me switch them back to Windows because certain web sites only work with Internet Explorer, or certain games they bought won't run under WINE or they have no idea how to configure WINE to run them for them. Dual-Booting just confuses them more, as does running Windows in a virtual machine. If they bought a Mac, a few weeks later they'd tell me to remove OSX off it and put Windows on it. So basically, they stick to Windows and Internet Explorer, even if I install Firefox for them. Also I install the Google Pack with StarOffice, but of course they want MS-Office instead because their friends and co-workers don't know how to open up ODT open text format documents, and they keep forgetting to "Save As" into MS-Word 97-2002 Format so their coworkers and friends can read their documents.
Yeah but saying Bush and Right-Wingers are fascists is a lot easier to do than check facts and find the origin of the embargo was done by Liberal Democrats.
Just ignore all of the Liberal Fascism and blame the Neocons.
Please raise those "Impeach Bush" signs high, flood all of the Digg, Reddit, DailyKOS, Kuro5hin, Slashdot, and any other social networking or discussion board site you can.
Just tell us all about how the Conservative Fascists are manipulating us with fear of Radical Islamic Terrorists, and please do ignore the fact that Liberal Fascists are manipulating us with fear that the Conservatives are taking away our freedom, fear of global warming to force us to give Liberals our money via carbon credits, fear of peak oil and high gas prices, fear of the RIAA and MPAA suing us for using BitTorrent, fear of our employers firing us for reading Slashdot, fear that Police can read text messages on some stoner's cell phone after pulling him over for speeding and see he contacted a drug dealer, fear that "The New World Order" controls everything so we have to vote in Liberals to keep the NWO out (and hope we don't notice that Liberal Politicians are part of a NWO if it exists in the first place), fear that "Big Brother" is watching us over the Internet and listening to our phone calls.
When you compare Conservative Fascists to Liberal Fascists, you'll find that Liberal Fascists use fear more often to manipulate and control most of us than the Conservative Fascists do. You'd have to ignore that FDR put Japanese-Americans into concentration camps and arrested anyone who was against WWII and put them in jail without a warrant or habeas corpus, you'll have to ignore that Harry S. Truman dropped nukes on Japan and started a war in Korea, you'll have to ignore the LBJ started the Vietnam war and helped bring about the embargo with Cuba in the first place, you'll have to ignore that Jimmy Carter supported Israel and helped out the Shah of Iran to get cancer treatment and it lead to a big Islamic Uprising in the Middle-East that lead to Radical Islamic Terrorism and 9/11, you'll have to ignore that Bill Clinton had military actions against Iraq and Afghanistan and was the first one to say Iraq had WMDs and ties to Bin Laden and tried to get Bin Laden since 1993 when OBL had his men do a failed truck bomb on the WTC in 1993. You can even ignore that Bill Clinton and Al Gore rejected the Koyoto treaty and were in favor of the foreign trade agreements with India, China, Mexico, etc that cost the USA a lot of jobs, and Hillary Clinton supported it and also worked for Wal-Mart and told them to offshore the manufacturing to Asia and when Wal-mart employees vote to unionize just close down the Wal-mart store and fire all the employees and open up a new store somewhere else in town.
I mean yeah, if you ignore the history of Liberal Fascism, you could say that Conservative Fascism is the worst form of fascism, but then isn't any form of fascism supposed to be bad?
Also in the former ex-Communist states, the word progressive and progress stood for Communism and the KGB, Stalin, Mao, and other Communist leaders told everyone they stood for progress. So did Hitler and Mussolini also claim to be progressives and stood for progress. So if a person calls themselves a progressive, that is a bad thing.
Almost Dreamspark is given away free by Microsoft to college and high school students. It contains Windows 2003 Server standard edition, but I can't see why the next one won't have Vista in it?
Mac users are used to using shortcuts. They don't know what X Windows is, so they call OSX as X. Typing up percentage takes longer than typing "%".
I guess somehow you assumed that since OSX was based on BSD Unix, that a Mac User would know that X stood for X Windows, and that they'd even know there was X Windows code in Mac OSX. All they see is the geegaws from the Aqua interface with nice shiny buttons and transparent windows and the dock, not even thinking that it uses code from X Windows or that the base of OSX is based on Unix. All they know is that Apple sold it to them, and it is easy to use like a Macintosh, so they call it X, not knowing what X Windows is or how OSX benefited from such technologies.
Though imagine they saw a Linux distro using a GNOME desktop skin that resembled Aqua, would they be confused, would they try to run OSX applications on it and wonder why they don't work? Would they try to claim that Linux ripped off OSX, despite Linux being invented over a decade before OSX was even thought up of?
I think the rights to Tetris was to the Soviet State of the USSR that doesn't exist anymore. He was a good Communist and signed over the rights to Tetris to the Academy he worked at, which gave the IP to the USSR. Then he decided to turn Capitalist and charge royalties for his game, which the Soviet State still owned legally. So in 1996 he joined Microsoft and gave the rights to Tetris to them for their games division. So now as a born again capitalist, he has to publicly discredit open source software to hide the fact that he has communist roots and gave away ownership of his creation to the USSR, Atari, Nintendo, and even Microsoft, but now after 20 years he claims that open source software took away his income, not the legal papers he signed that gave away his rights to ownership of Tetris to many organizations. Instead he blames Open Source Software, because that is what Microsoft told him to do.
If I recall, early on when Tetris was licensed for use in the USA. Tengen (an Atari company), Spectrum Holobyte and others all claimed Tetris as their IP and all made commercial versions of it. There was an arcade version, a Nintendo Entertainment System version, then a Gameboy version that Nintendo released. They all fought over who had the rights to Tetris. Here is a history of Tetris and as you can see many people and companies made versions of it, but please note that each version was a closed commercial license not an open source license.
Seriously, WTF?

Is AMD Dead Yet?

· Score: 1
Compaq uses AMD chips as well. The AMD Turion seems to be a good chip, low electricity use, dual core, priced lower than an Intel Centrino CPU of the same Ghz.
I am wondering when Apple will start using AMD chips to make lower costing Macintosh systems? Mac OSX has already been hacked to run on AMD processors already, and I am sure that an AMD Mac Mini or iMac would sell lower than an Intel based Mac Mini or iMac.
I can think of a lot more than one. The half of the Democratic party that supports Barrack Obama instead of Hillary Clinton as President, for one clue.
Finally George W. Bush is unlocked as an American leader, and the Fox News World Wonder is available, after it is built you can declare war on any nation with a Weapons of Mass Destruction claim even if they don't have any. It also allows you to remain in power even if your people find out the nation had no WMDs and it is draining your economy as well.
Special units, Dick Cheney unit to form Haliburton corporation to get no-bid oil contracts on any nation you invade. Colin Powell unit to help ease opposition to the war with faked evidence for it. Condeliza Rice unit to get other civilizations to side with you on the war. Bill O'Reilly unit to keep your population happy even if they oppose the war.
I heard he still takes the time to get his picture taken for Symantec products that have the Norton name on them. They still pay him royalties over using his name, though his original software has been rewritten a lot since he sold it to Symantec and he cannot claim ownership of it anymore.
I think Peter Norton ran out of ideas, but had made so much money that he decided to buy a small island and start buying art with his billions for investment purposes should the world economy collapse due to something like, oh I dunno, crappy commercial software having so many security holes in it that everyone gets their identities stolen by hackers who withdrawal all money from bank accounts and cash in stocks from data stolen from commercial database servers they installed some trojan on when the system administrator clicked on one of their web ads while he was looking for how to fix the problem of the server crashing 12 times a day on some web forum. Then whole nations' economies collapse, except for some small island nation that Peter Norton bought and stores his art collection on?
What can you expect from overzealous left-wingers who scream "Impeach Bush" louder than anyone and refuse to read original articles like that one, and just adlib and pretend to have read them?
It was a mistake by the ISP, not the FBI. The FBI noticed the mistake and told the ISP how they had errored.
I mean if they really want to get upset, get mad at Bill Clinton for approving that Carnivore project instead of vetoing it for the FBI so ISPs can keep track of email and send copies to the FBI in the first place. That is what started the whole warrentless wiretapping of emails and Internet surfing in the first place and lead to the commercial version of Carnivore which is what we call spyware now.
The Vista SP1 on most BitTorrent web sites is RC2 hacked to look like RTM, no wonder people installing it are having issues. Might also have a few trojans as well in it.
I only get Microsoft service packs from Microsoft, less trojans and less hacked betas that look like the real thing.
In Denmark, why not, not like their government runs their courts. If they rule that garage sales are against the law, then it is banned in Denmark. All the Pirate Bay does is provide maps to garage sales, the actually files aka garage sales are stored on private computers with Internet IPs. Why is it that most terrorists are Radical Muslims from the middle-east?
Why is it that every 9/11 suicide bomber was a Radical Muslim from Saudi Arabia using diplomatic Visas that the Clinton administration had released in 1994 that didn't require background checks, yet Bush gets blamed for the 9/11 attacks instead?
The Chinese government wants US space and airplane and technology secrets, so they send some of their citizens over to the USA to get naturalized and then they get into secret level security clearance jobs in technology companies and get access to the US technology and send it overseas. Not for sabotage mind you, but because China wants to have access to the same technology that the USA has exclusively and no other nation has access to. China also has a lot of their citizens get high paying jobs in the USA and send a majority of the money back to China to boost their economy and drain the US economy. Nothing we can do about that either. China does not believe in intellectual property rights, and do not feel that they are doing anything wrong.
'Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section "What Works Are Protected."'
'What Is Not Protected by Copyright?
Several categories of material are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection. These include among others:
*
Works that have not been fixed in a tangible form of expression (for example, choreographic works that have not been notated or recorded, or improvisational speeches or performances that have not been written or recorded)
*
Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents
*
Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration
*
Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (for example: standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources)'
Apparently ideas cannot be copyrighted. Not only that but an employment contract cannot violate copyright law or the Constitution that copyright law is based on.
I know this because I used to work for a law firm for almost five years. They knew that ideas cannot be copyrighted, and told me to develop programs for them, even if they didn't own the ideas to them. Besides in my years not working for them anymore, I came up with new ideas to do things differently anyway that are not even based on the ideas I used when I worked for them. In fact, I have much better ideas than they could even hope to have that work better than what they had.
They won't censor the Mohamed Cartoons that Muslims find offensive, but they'll go out of their way to censor a BitTorrent web site?
They support free speech when it mocks religion, but they don't support free speech when it comes to BitTorrent. Hypocrisy at its finest.
Don't give me that "they only block it because it violates copyright laws" because on The Pirate Bay there is open source materials and files in the public domain and shareware as well that are 100% legal. They are called legal torrents. Legal torrents are much more than just Linux ISOs, many music artists release open source OGG and MP3 files for free as well under an open source license. Michael David Crawford is one such musical artist that has had his works silenced by fascist laws and actions against BitTorrent sites. In fact he even lists many other music artists just like him who also share their music for free on BitTorrent and that is the real reason that recording companies are shutting down BitTorrent web sites, to silence the competition and sabotage their efforts to release free and alternative music by independent open source musical artists and force everyone to buy commercial CDs instead.
I still own one. My original Gameboy had the LCD screen get lines in it, and stops working unless you jiggle the AA batteries just so and then power comes back on.
The Atari Lynx uses more batteries and eats more power than a Gameboy, but it is more durable plus it came with a color LCD. It also weighs more, and has the graphics and sounds of an Amiga 1000 in a hand-held case. Plus the carts for the Lynx are wafer thin and don't need to be cleaned as often as the Gameboy carts.
Also I have a few Game.com units by Tiger, the original touch screen handheld, they last forever as well. Except when I lose the stylus pen, but a finger or retractable ink pen works just as well as a stylus. As a bonus the Game.com has built in PDA like software.
when you can write a different way of doing it with new code that uses a different way of doing it on your own time, that isn't like the old code or the code they replaced it with?
I am sure that over time your coding has improved, and you might be able to find a different way to do the same thing that isn't the same as your old code or the code they used to replace it.
That is unless your employment contract states that even coding you do on your own time still belongs to the company. If so, wait until your contract is over, or the employer changes the contract to allow you to write code on your own time that belongs to you and allows you to open source it.
As long as the new code you write doesn't use code from the old code or the code that replaces it, nor is it written on company time or the contract doesn't somehow prohibit you from writing it so it isn't the property of the company you work for, you should be able to write open source code.
The old code can't be that good, as they replaced it with different code. Chances are that you can find a better way to do the same thing with different code that doesn't violate any contract you have with the company.
Anyway I agree with others, you should be talking to a lawyer instead of Slashdot.
are the 2008 Server changes made to address the incompatibility issues Vista had with older software? If they are, then great.
What I had originally heard was that Windows 2008 Server and Vista SP1 were going to be based on XP code for compatibility issues in order to make the OS more stable and more compatible. I am not sure how much XP code was used on the new kernel.
Since I support many friends and family members who have Vista machines, I am thinking of buying a new PC with Vista preinstalled on it, and hopefully SP1 to see if it fixes the problems that the original Vista had. As I recall the original XP also had instability issues and compatibility issues and XP SP1 fixed those, and then XP SP2 made even more improvements and made XP more stable and more compatible.
What I hope is that Vista SP1 ends up being what the original Vista had promised. The only thing is the hardware requirements for Vista are 3 times or more the requirements that XP had. So of course upgrading an XP machine to Vista is going to run it slower. Vista on a newer machine made in 2007/2008 should run a lot better than Vista on a 2004/2005/2006 machine.
If all else fails, I hope that ReactOS is developed into a stable build in 2008/2009 some time. People need to keep an eye on that open sourced OS. Once it goes into beta testing, it is in alpha right now, but 0.4 or 0.5 will enter Beta testing and be good enough to use as an alternative to Windows.
Keep in mind that Windows 2008 Server is based on Windows 2003 Server, which was based on Windows XP. Windows Vista was not based on Windows XP, but was a rewrite attempt. Vista and Longhorn are actually too different projects, Vista was a rewrite of Windows, while Longhorn was based on Windows XP. At least that is what I heard.
with malware because Linux is a hostile environment.
Unix systems can be infected, like the original Arpanet worm that Robert Morris Jr. was accused of writing that infected Sendmail Unix servers.
I had run a Linux server in the past for my web server and I noticed things like that which forced me to reformat the system because Linux was acting funny with directory names and log files kept being deleted for no reason, to hide the malware infections and/or hacking attempts.
