I donno, I have my friends (real life people! oooooo) on there to keep in a circle and everyone shares thoughts, events, things in life, etc. Well and shared pics, which is kind of cool. Basically, the same as any social network. (i.e. Myspace, etc)
You'll learn quickly that you can't choose what other people do, you simply ride the wave and take the path of least resistance when it comes to the trivial stuff. It's a lot like saying "Hello... Evolution!" when someone says something about Outlook.
I'm sure I speak for many people when I say I use facebook about as often as I use xkcd. It takes little to no time to read it (minute, maybe two?) and the only real posts I do are emailed pictures or quick blips of thoughts to facebook. The moment it actually becomes more than just another page on the net is when you know your either trying hard to avoid it or your obsessed as a user. (pick your poison)
I'm going to assume you misunderstood what was meant by the word "dowsing". While technically it means what you're getting to, it's also a colloquialism used to mean "to drench" or just put alot of it on the object.
i.e. "I've been dowsed in water by my brother, who is in the pool!"

The linux kernel has broken backwards compatibility? The drivers are still there... unless you're mistaking the Linux kernel with the glibc shared libraries.
That's an Ubuntu issue, mainly. It sounds like the packaging wasn't set up correctly. It also sounds like they're trying to make things so easy that it's hard.
Instead of saying names of things existing previously, answer the question. We realize X.500 was the legacy version of LDAP. The moon shot was the legacy of the shuttle, as well.
