I just ordered that my group no longer use FrameMaker. We generate the basic R&D that drive the company, so everyone expands our specs. What is the bet alterative to FrameMaker?

OK, got it off of their contest page (which by the way seems to be questionable legally as it has no way to enter without buying their product)

    The address is:

Sponsor: The Sponsor of this contest is Empower Technologies Inc. whose address is 7981 - 168th Avenue NE, Redmond, WA, 98052, USA.

This puts it in old Redmond, not the Overlake area where the main MS campusi are located.

PS If anyone wants to burn them for running a bogus contest you can report them to the Washington State Attorney General's consumer protection office at 800.551.4636

As support for this. While on top of a 10K ft mountain in Oregon I was able to reach ham radio sites in 5 states while the person with a cell phone was unable to get a call out even though (or because) we could see a half dozen cites with cell service. When he walked a few feet off the sumit so he could only see one city he had no problems getting a call out. He was, however, unable to circumnavigate the mountain and keep his connection. I guess the system just could'nt handle a phone jumping 100 miles between cells.

  9. Java is wrong for most programming tasks on Java as a CS Introductory Language? · · Score: 1

Java works on only a very few platforms. Try finding a JVM for an 8051 or a typical low end cell phone. /. seems to have too much of an IT & web view of programming. There is a whole world of programming tasks that don't have a CRT or keyboard attached (or OS for that matter). Sure Sun is pushing an embedded solution, but that will only fit in less than 1% of the real world devices. C++ has been ported to some very slim CPUs and in many of those places you must have hard memory access to talk to the hardware. And forget about putting an JVM in an 8 bit CPU or even a 16 bit Palm for that matter.

  11. Mach 3 Bumble Bees on Stealth Aircraft Useless? · · Score: 3

It has alway been possible to track Stelth aircraf. Stealth effectively reduces the cross-section of a fighter to say the size of a bee. Now you might expect that a radair return from a bee is rather small (about -100dB) and would get lost in the noise. If you just filter for return amplitude you would be correct. On the other hand if you filter for speed you can pick out a bee traveling mach 2 with little effort. In fact, you know that it is a stealth aircraft. 20 years ago building a 22 to 28 bit ADC to grab the the data real time was a problem, now you can can just call Creative Labs and get a gross of them FedExed. The truth of the matter is that the Navy has always been able to track Stealth aurcraft, even with their original SLC8 RADAR. Counter-measures are a whole nother issue, Throwing out a ton of RF noise is not a good idea if the whole point of your aircraft is to be silent. On the other hand, if you are dealing with a bunch of ill-trained draftees Stealth does seem tooffer some advantages (Vs. gulf war) -S

  12. ACLU & other options on Intellectual Property and a Censored Slash Site? · · Score: 1

Please understand that the ACLU is a volenteer organization and as such has very limitied resources. They expend their resources on making "case law" (read, land mark rulings) that others can then use. IF you present this to them you will need to show them that this will create new case law. They don't have the resources to help just because you got screwed.

What you need is NATIONAL press. The down side of press is that they will also go to UofU for the other side. The U will use their professional PR flacks and if you did ANYTHING that can be spun the other way they will use it against you.

There are many sources of info on handling the press on the web. You are now in a marketing campaign to get your life back. For a start see:http://www.netpress.org/careandfeeding.html

As a hair ball sugestion, put your right for the code up on ebay. Describe in detail what the code does and that the that the rights are in dispute with UofU. Set a random high min bid (say $1M). Most likely ebay will kill the auction, but then call the big national press as well as your local AP stinger (see your local phone book).

If you are lucky some broader-minded U will invite you in.
