This is a common misconception. Local temperature varies massively in very short periods - within a single day it can go from very cold to very warm - but that's LOCAL. To give an idea of what temperature means on a global scale, the difference between global temperature now, and in the peak of the last global iceage is just a few degrees
Basically, yes. They won't accept "I don't know" as an answer. You HAVE to be able to give them an address (even if you make one up - not advised, they'd likely come down on you like a ton of bricks if you were found out.) Seems crazy to me, too, but such is the way of travelling into the US these days.
I know that (the zoomquilt) is probably old now, but I'd never seen it before, and it's one of the coolest things I've ever seen on the web. I always wanted to do something like that myself, but couldn't really figure out how to juggle the zooming and image swapping to make it seamless. Congratulations to everyone at ICE! The dali quilt is really cool too
Great breakdown.. just wanted to add this painfully obvious one, too:
* A 1995 meta-analysis found that violent pornography might reinforce aggressive behavior and negative attitudes toward women ...But then again, it also found that it might not.
Remember when Republicans were all about not getting involved state issues? (pre-Reagan) What happened is that they have discovered that it's so better to aggregate the power into the hands of the few via legislation and control the populace and impose "morality" that way.
They discovered the voting power of the religious fundamentalists - religious conviction with neoconservative agenda. A heady and dangerous mix indeed.
Wow, don't throw your toys out of the pram! Yeah, for some reason I called it "exteem" instead of "exeem" (or "eXeem" if you insist) - no idea why, as I know it's correct name, but that's what I get for posting in the middle of the night. Either way, my point remains the same.
I had a look through some of your recently posted messages to see whether you have a generally hostile disposition, or if I got special treatment. I didn't. Every other post of yours is some kind of flame, cheap shot, or criticism, most of which contribute nothing useful to the topic at hand. It's a shame, really. It's people like you who are lowering the general tone of Slashdot, and making it an increasingly less friendly place to be.
haha.. yeah, I remember that. Weren't there going to be PS2 guided nukes or something as well?
For an interesting look back, google around and find some pre-release articles and "screenshots" from current or previous consoles. Especially interesting are the PS2 and the Nintendo N64 - both were hyped to insane levels. Some of the "This is what the graphics will be like!" shots from the N64 were CG renders that still aren't matched in the most powerful PC or console games today.
They're going to say "Please stay in this room under armed guard until we arrange for an immediate flight home for you. Oh, and by the way you now have a permanent black mark on our immigrations computer and will never be able to enter the US again, even temporarily."
Apparently you didn't, or if you did, you missed a hell of a lot:
The complaint is NOT about immigration forms. The complaint is NOT about filling an entry card. The complaint is NOT about immigration staff.
The complaint IS about an American Airlines (AIRLINE, NOT IMMIGRATION) rent-a-cop demanding that the passenger put this information down on a blank sheet of paper (BLANK PAPER, NOT A FORM) with no justification, on what appears to be a whim.
This is about the fifth post of this type I've had to put in this discussion. I think this has to be a record for people not RTFA, even on Slashdot.
There IS a third option... Stay in the US, but move to an area where there are enough likeminded people to influence local policy, and start making a difference from there. Check it out, it's called the Free State Project - the idea is to move 20,000 liberty lovers to an area where they can make a real difference. http://www.freestateproject.org/
I'm not an American, but if I was, I'd definitely be considering this
RTFA. There was a considerable difference here. Standard immigration control procedure has you list where you're staying on forms, for the immigrations people, yes. In this guy the guy was asked to put this information down on a blank piece of paper with no justification at the whim of a rentacop who worked only for the airline.
I'll see your "Amen" and raise you a "Hallelujah";)
Actually, I say we allow the creationists their stickers... If we get to put a page in the front of the bible that says "This story is entirely fictional. Any resemblance to real characters or events is purely coincidental"
At the risk of cutting myself on Occam's razor, the universe is, last I heard, infinite in all spacial dimensions... so why not temporal? The unending causal chain seems the most straightforward solution to me.
Disclaimer: I have about as much authority and qualification in this field as the average potato.
Correct, evolution is just a theory. So's relativity.. and you know how unreliable THAT one is. Heck, don't even get me started on electromagnetism.. damn theories, always fall apart so easily. Now a good solid belief on the other hand...
(if this sounds like a flame, it's not. I realise parent isn't defending creationism, I'm just making a point, tongue firmly in cheek)
You have never seen USA's money have you ?
Yes, and WTF is with that all seeing eye atop the truncated pyramid, anyways? That's just bizarre

Afghanistan was a total sucess.
I have to agree with you there - it was pretty impressive how Bin Laden was captured so quickly. Uh.. oh.. wait...

Ach, and there I was about to tell you to look it up on Google Image Search ;P
Granted, it's porn
Hey, just for the record... I *love* porn!
(with a nod to Hicks)

"Exteem" and "Exteem Lite" are two different things.
Exteem DOES contain spyware.
Exteem Lite has the spyware ripped out.
Hence you are 100% correct when you say "Exteem lite does not contain spyware", and the parent is correct in saying that Exteem does.

I had to spend ten minutes explaining what quasars are to the security person!
Well next time put them in your checked luggage!
They're going to say "Please stay in this room under armed guard until we arrange for an immediate flight home for you. Oh, and by the way you now have a permanent black mark on our immigrations computer and will never be able to enter the US again, even temporarily."
Though perhaps not in those exact words.
This really isn't that new. The form... RTFA! There was no form, it was a blank sheet of paper
Pretty standard stuff really... RTFA! This was NOT standard procedure
Been quizzed quite intently at immigration... RTFA! This was NOT immigrations, but a member of AA staff.
Nothing to see here, move along... Try reading the article BEFORE making conclusions about it
I swear, I have NEVER seen such an epidemic of non-RTFAing in one story, even on Slashdot.
I'm sorry, did you actually read the open letter.

Agreed, everybody should see it. It's everything "Farenheit 9/11" should've been, but wasn't. Informed, rational, and non-sensationalist.
It's in 3 parts, Avaliable here (lokitorrent results page for search="nightmares")
..and I bet it won't be done as well as it was in Spy Kids 3D
Well I hope they leave the window open until it hits a ratio of at least 1 then!
Some of those look strange... weird.. maybe one could even say non Euclidean
In other news, astronomers report the stars are moving into a once-in-a-millennium alignment...
