Thing is, if it IS stealth marketing.. it's not very good. I mean, having read most of TFA, the thing actually sounds pretty crap to me:
Screen quality is poor and hard to see in light External mono speaker sucks horribly DRM'd up to it's eyeballs Doesn't register as a standard USB storage device in windows Files on the device are read-only, and have to be copied to a PC for editing in any way Too big to be properly portable And.. this may just be me.. but who the hell WANTS to watch movies on a 4" screen? at least stuff like the glasstron gives you a decent sized screen (and let's face it, you don't look MUCH more of a dork than you would with one of these things)
Yeah, I know there would be massive economic consequences if money grew on tress, so to speak, such as needing several large deciduous forests to purchase one mouldy ship's peanut(*), and I do realise that's inextricably linked with the issue at hand, but really, what I wanted to illuminate was simply that by copying something you are not depriving the original owner of their items, merely making a second duplicate...
If I sneak into your house and steal a book, that's theft...if I sneak into your house and photocopy a book... well, that's just plain creepy actually, but yeah, you get the idea.
(*) If you got this reference, congratulations, award yourself a smug sense of self satisfaction
So you won't mind if I "transfer" funds from your bank account? Great!
Actually, no, not in the slightest - on the condition that it's just like transferring anything else over P2P and it's copied rather than movied to your account - I get to keep my original copy (i.e. my money)
I'd have a problem if you actually took my money away from me - that would be theft, after all.
I'm sorry, were you trying to make a point about "transferring==theft"?
About time these scum got nailed Now.. who wants to buy some cheap h3rbal vi.agr@? Oh, and I've got a few million I need to temporarily offload into a bank account...
That montage is incredible! I mean.. what are the chances of so many people seperately posting identical blank grey square images, and one person posting one that looks like a "509 - Bandwidth Exceeded", and them compositing together in just the right way like that!
People who enjoy that sort of thing should check out progress quest a freeware RPG without all that irritating moving, fighting, talking, and questing that gets in the way of the true RPG experience
Is this the same mirrored-sphere-on-infinite-checkboard POV-Ray? The one where you have to describe all your objects and light sources in a big text file which then takes all day to render? How the hell did they get it to do those amazing things?
Yes. In exactly the same way C++ is that "hello world" language, and HTML is the language that was used to make the hamsterdance page... Just because poor quality things are made with a language doesn't mean that's all it's capable of.
The BBC doesn't show Big Brother.. in fact, AFAIK they're not guilty of any "reality shows" except perhaps the occasional *choke* "Fly-on-the-wall-docusoap" as I believe the trendy media types like to call them
I'm not on either side here, making no assumptions about whether a plane did or did not in fact go into the pentagon, but what I will say is as evidence those photos are completely useless - they're all cropped down to the point where they could be from absolutely anywhere. Someone who knows planes really well could probably identify the type from it, but I doubt you could conclusively prove the time and location (i.e. that that is in fact the pentagon crash) from those
Just like you can get sent to jail for wiggling your finger.... if that finger happens to be in front of the trigger of a gun which is pointed at someone's head.
For what it's worth, I can think of several ways "just typing" could/should get you into all sorts of trouble. Death threats, anyone?
I find it interesting that these kinds of measures are inevitably wheeled out in the name of some greater public good, for the benefit of The People though as far as I can see, The People are quite happy sitting at home listening to their MP3s and watching their DivXs, and for the most part aren't too worried about the sky falling.
I know this isn't 100% ontopic, but it's kinda related, and kinda interesting. The other day, for the first time in ages, I bought a DVD. I got home, popped it in my multireigion DivX capable DVD player, and turned it on. What's the first thing I'm greeted with? The movie?
Nope. A minute long, unskippable demonisation of pirates, telling me how people who pirate movies are out to kill and rape my children (funny.. don't remember having any), and fund terrorism - um, how, exactly? since when do you pay for Bittorrent downloads. And of course, that pirate movies are inevitably terrible quality and will ruin your enjoyment. Funny. I've never been forced to sit through FACT preaching at me on a pirate DVD, and I tend to find that release groups take so much pride in their rips and distribution that the quality is uniformly excellent - indeed, with anime fansubs the fan-released movies often have better subtitling than the officially released ones.
So, their points? 1. Think Of The Children! (oh dear) 2. You're funding terrorism! (without spending) 3. Inferior products! (except.. they're better).
So, can anyone re-order these words into a popular phrase or sentence: On, stand, leg, to, don't, they, a, have
Ob Hicks (paraphrased) "We're losing the war on drugs. Think about that for a moment, we, the world's most powerful nation, are fighting a war... and people on drugs are winning it. Some pretty smart mo'fos on that side!"
I deal with a LOT of HP laptops, mainly 610cs at the moment, and I've had a lot of faulties recently - had three brand new ones DOA in a row a couple of weeks back
For that matter, I also deal with a lot of HP/Compaq S7500 17" CRT monitors, and the failure rate on those is a bit on the silly side... but don't even get me started on the CRAP's (Compaq Advanced Port Replicator... they got the letters the wrong way around)
To be fair though.. they do make good... um.. must be something... just give me a minute.. I'll think of it...
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? no! It's captain anal!
I know that you're feeling all smug and pleased with yourself for correctly using "virii" as the plural of virus, but you are, in fact, wrong. Vir is the latin root for "man", therefore virii is in fact "men", and the plural of virus is the horrendously wrong sounding "viruses". Furthermore, the ii ending in Latin is only attached to words ending in "ius" - for example "radius" > "radii".
Anyways, no need to thank me.. must dash, I think I hear someone somewhere talking about their "PIN Number"... and remember, I'm not arrogant, just better than you.
Captain Anal, over and out.
(btw, in true slashdot fashion, I haven't actually bothered to check any of these facts, so I may actually be wrong. ha!)
Farb-Rausch is the name of the group that wrote The Product. They've taken "theprodukkt" as their domain name, etc, because that has been their best known and most successful demo.
here's another way to see those old demos without having to jump through all the compatibility hoops...
If you have winamp 5 and a reasonable broadband connection, pop open the media library window, go to the internet TV section, and look for any of the Demoscene channels, or Yodel TV - basically, for anyone who's not seen Winamp TV yet, it's pretty much shoutcast-for-video.. and the demoscene channels, well, as you might guess, stream video of demos. Good stuff.
No kidding. I can't tell you how many people were totally confused the first time they saw the Windows XP start menu for instance.
Okay, first up, mods, this is NOT a troll.. but brace yourselves.. I'm about to imply that windows might not be as bad as all that..
I really don't understand what's to be confused by in the XP start menu. Sure, for a new user you open it, and a load of stuff pops up at you, but regardless of whether you're using fischer-price or classic mode, it's pretty straightforward.. I mean.. there's a bit marked "All Programs" - and all your programs are in there. There's a bit marked "My Recent Documents", and your recent documents are in there.. there's a bit marked "Control Panel", and the control panel is in there.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never once had a user be confused by the start menu - in fact, it's about the ONLY part of windows most of them find straightfoward, and I'm talking here about people who have close to zero computer knowledge (i.e. don't know terms like "icon" or "minimize")
Christ, I didn't even spot this.. The other 2 methods are not simple.
Granted, the registry is a bit of a maze until you get the feel for it, I'll give you that. As it happens though, I found that registry key on my own - I've explored the registry quite extensively.... after all, if you're going to have an operating system you might as well learn to use it properly.
However, I'm not going to let you off with complaining about the policy method being too complex. The policy editor is the next step up from the control panel (and indeed, accessable through it) - If that's too complex for you then you should be running XP Home, not Pro. And if you're running XP Home then you've no place to be complaining about functionality, because it's designed to be user friendly and limited, protecting the user from themselves.
Of course, it's fine for Linux programs to ask users to go trawling through esoteric config files to change settings.
I don't really know why I'm bothering on here - pissing into the wind isn't even the word. I'm really just burning Karma by saying anything positive about Windows, but it's okay, I'll soon get it back with a load of "Windows sux! LinuX iz T3h r0x0r!" posts
blah blah blah blah given by psi blah blah
Ah, Psi. Why didn't you say so? all you needed to say is that it's done by alien psychics. it's simple enough.
Oh, and as for this no cloning rule, well damn, teh RIAA are getting in everywhere now!
DRM really isn't the problem that everyone ma*ERROR: Typed character quota exceeded. Renew licence immediately. Terminating post*

What's the deal with the freeipods thing? I always figured it must be a scam, but never really bothered finding out what it was all about
About time these scum got nailed

Oh.. wait...
just how much crafting a massive online gamer would like to do
Perhaps they should craft themselves some running shoes, and lose some of that mass?

Supernova.com is a scam! (as is suprnova.net)
What you seek is on suprnova.org

And you misspelled "Freedom Fries"
It's perfect for those special parties, too!
"Everybody put your car keys in the bowl, and the fun will begin"
(can anyone tell me the name of that robot? it's from one of the adverts in GTA:VC, and I can't remember what it's called)
At any rate, In the future there will be robots
