Yes, education is the key. But governments will always find it easier to just increase control over population than to properly educate it. And it really is easier - and less time- and resource-consuming. Sad, but true.
Note that I'm *NOT* supporting this kind of decision, I'm only describing what happens in reality. I support and defend the idea that everyone should get proper and decent education.
K.C. Munchkin (both the games) and Pickaxe Pete were my favorites... I use to say that Munchkin was Odyssey's Pac-Man and Pickaxe Pete was Odyssey's Pitfall. And better.
Odyssey's games were not so good as Atari ones when it comes to graphics (look at Enduro), but some of its games were way better.
Yes, yes! I'm always hearing that too. Every time I hear it in a movie or on TV I tell people it is from the Doom II game. This must be one of the reasons my friends regard me as a geek as well...
Mind you, I still have this delusion of seeing a MMO Nethack.
You hit Groo the barbarian! --more-- Tim the wizard casts slow monster on you! --more-- Groo whispers to you in private, "DIE DIE DIE" --more-- Groo the barbarian hits! --more-- Joan the archeologist yanks your Vorpal Blade off your hands with her whip! --more-- You are caught in Tim the wizard's fireball! --more-- You die...
Or... alternatively we can replace every word of "universe" with "god" in your own response...:-) kinda of looping, isn't it? (maybe it proofs something, maybe it proofs nothing...)
My emotions are affected by noises I cannot hear everytime I play nethack...
You hear a jackal howling at the moon. --more-- You hear a mumbled curse. --more-- You hear a rushing sound. --more-- It hits! It hits! It hits! --more-- You hear the howling of the CwnAnnwn.
This was "heard" in an ASCII screen. THAT made me shiver.
What about medicine? Penicillin? Birth control? Reading glasses? Hearing aids? etc..
Man, come visit my country (well I don't know if you're a brazilian too), and you'll see that all those things help the people who can *pay* for it. Public hospitals here are a (bad) joke, for an example. Birth control? Our government doesn't looks concerned about that. The biggest the number of (dumb) electors, the better for our politicians. I said dumb because we don't have _decent_ public schools. The majority of our people, as a result, are accommodated about the country situation. The poor people, the ones that have to live with $78 a month, have sometimes 10+ children. Crime, drugs, child prostitution, etc. etc.
I'm aware about all the advances you said. I know (some) of the marvelous things that were invented/discovered and benefits the whole humankind. But what I like in Edward's Law, and the reason I choose it to be my.sig, is: no matter the benefits any given technology can bring to humankind, if it is accessible only to the people that have $$$ to pay for it. (or for those who knows it, if the knowledge isn't free for all).
I like technology but, I believe that in our case (Brazil), we have to focus on resolve our social problems first. Maybe the $200 computer can helps, maybe not, I don't know. But I know that I don't see my government concerned about the social problems (say, unemployment) as they should.
(huh... finally, sorry for my bad english.)

"You cannot apply a technological solution to a sociological problem."
Man, 25% of Brasil workforce earn only (approximately) US$78 (or even LESS). And there are 12 million of retired people that earn the $78 too.
And we're not counting the unemployed -- many many people are surviving of the 'informal economy'. (see my.sig... <sigh>) --

perhaps the next ideia will be put pedals on desktops.;) a good excuse for the geek that needs to exercise his body and don't want to get off of his computer...
And I see gangs of geek-bikers with laptops in his bikes... crossing the night...
What a strange game. The only winning move is not to play.
...vaporware.
Over ten years ago? It's almost twenty years.
There was a version of tetris someone made, maybe from here... that always gave you the worst possible piece.
Bastard Tetris.
Almost the same story as mine. Only my drive was an 5 1/4" one. :)
And my MSX was an Hotbit, the black model

> In fact, I had always heard that algae produced far more oxygen than larger plants
That's what I had always heard too. Rainforests play a small role in oxygen renewal in our planet.

Despite it doesn't have HDD, CD or even FDD, this article (in portuguese guys) says it will have connectors for such devices.
:)
Maybe the poor people will prefer not to pay for it, but for some brazilians (including me), it's an excellent option for a second machine

wow, it'll be very interesting... I imagine using linux on my PC, and on my old dusty MSX =)
it'll be at least an interesting option of a cheap "backup" machine...
