  1. They didn't call it the Space Race for nothing! on Publicly Funded Competition For NASA? · · Score: 2

Competition is what drove the space program. Now that there aren't as many "firsts" to achieve, NASA could use a good swift kick to go after those that are left (Mars, Pluto and the ISS).

Many states are already using an 80/20 mix of No. 2 diesel and biodiesel to reduce emissions.

To paraphrase Chris Coleman's post on Daily Daemon News, 4.0 was considered highly developmental and 3.x was supposed to continue the -STABLE branch. It seems that many have gone with 4.0 so the FreeBSD folks made it the -STABLE branch and have made 5.0 -CURRENT.

I've seen other vendors maintain what appears to be a backlevel release. After Lotus Notes 4.x came out, they were still releasing CDs on the 3.x code base.

All signs point to 3.5 being the last release in the 3.x line.

But when it comes to the *BSD family, FreeBSD has more merchandise available. Just check out http://www.freebsdmall.com for stickers, hats, shirts, mouse pads, plushies, etc. OpenBSD does have the cool Blowfish shirt, with the C code on the back.

Anyway, InfoModelers was once part of Asymetrix, and we all know who put a lot of money into Asymetrix - Paul Allen!

The Lawsuit drug on for 3 years, and eventually forced all active *BSD development to restart from a new code base. BSDI was a commercial version of BSD Networking Release-2, so it was a commercial product that caught AT&T's attention.

Meanwhile, some bright kid in Finland was developing a Unix-like OS for his own needs...

The BSD license allows developers to make their modifications private, something that should attract commercial developers. The GPL does not allow this.

  17. Programming for Mac SE on Palm VII Field Trial · · Score: 1

My point was that most people don't realize what's under the hood of a Palm. With all the 68000 knowledge out there, it's no wonder that so many people have written such great code for the Palm.

WinCE is purposely difficult to code for - you have to use Bill's tools to get anything done!

As a long time (2.5 years) Palm user, I am afraid that 3Com is taking Palm in the wrong direction. The market perception is that Palm is not evolving while the WinCE platform is.

Yes, the PalmOS doesn't need much RAM, but they really should put more RAM into the little buggers. Color - boy, they've missed the boat on this one. Color always sells more - look TV, the PC and the Mac. Once color became available, nobody wanted monochrome. And the Palm V - people are already referring to them as the "Lady Palm" - just look at their latest ad in Wired! They slimed it down so it will fit in a purse - come on, ladies - what's wrong with wearin' 'em on your belt? :-)

As for programming them, the Palm may be easier to code for than WinCE, but then again, you're coding for a 15 year old Mac SE disguised as a handheld! 16MHz 68000, 2MB RAM, monochrome display, proprietary OS...

I keep eyeing the new WinCE handhelds because I think color is cool but - there's the battery life issue and big bad Microsoft.

But, to put it simply - people have to eat. Some choose to make money their primary motivator, others choose contributing to the greater community. (And some just want to see there names in print!)

The Open Source community is big enough to include those that make money as well as those who aren't driven by profit. Let's not let this issue divide us. If by selling copies of Linux in the local book/computer stores, the more people we'll have using Linux and there's strength in numbers.
