Testing at this point means absolutely nothing. It's simply way too early to tell. None of the teams have actually launched their 2005 spec chassis and aero packages.

Not only that, but people scoffed at the F2004, saying Ferrari made no improvements in the offseason. Well look what happened.

F1 cars may be easier to drive than some other racing series, but it's a lot harder to be competitive in F1 than most other racing series. To keep the car perfectly on edge in order to make up a 10th of a second is extremely hard.

When's the last time you saw a driver willingly leave F1 to go to another season? Rarely, if ever.

Well, take this into consideration: F1 drivers must endure extreme G-loads over the course of a race weekend and also off season testing. They can routinely pull ~4 gs. F1 requires EXTREMELY fit drivers. Many of them have workout regimes just as intense as any other "regular" athlete. Not only must they put up with the g-force beatings, they also require absolutely phenomonal hand-eye coordination, and must have amazing reflexes.

So tell me, since when does a sport that requires stamina, extremely fine tuned hand-eye cooridination, and amazing reflexes not involve athletes?

Let's see your Charger try and race a decent Europan sports car on something other than a track that's either: A) A straight line, or B) A straight line with banked turns leading to another straight line. To compare a Smart Car to a Charger is just as stupid as thinking cars should only go fast in straight lines and turn left.

I can't speak for CinePaint and gtoaster, but no free open source product comes anywhere near close to Lightwave or Maya in terms of power. And don't even try and say Blender.

If there were a free alternative that could actualyl compete to such expensive programs as LW and Maya, don't you think companies would have adopted them by now?

Open source is nice, but just because it's open source doesn't mean it's better.

That won't happen if everyone avoid Linux.

It's kind of a catch 22 though. I don't use Linux for any graphic work whatsoever, because it simply doesn't come close to the stuff I can do on Windows. Not to say Linux isn't capable of it, just that as you said it has catching up to do. I'm perfectly content avoiding Linux rather than compromise workflow and sacrifice features, etc. I'll gladly let other people use it and work with Linux apps to get them up to par, but if everyone thought the way I did, nothing would be accomplished.

As for the Gimp, Photoshop is the market leader for a reason. As a side note, I think that's part of the problem with Linux software alternatives to Windows programs/suites such as Office, Photoshop, etc - they're always playing catch up rather than innovating to stand out in the market.

The way my desk is set up though, a second CRT would be like 2 inches from my face, so this should be nice. I'm in the graphic design business, so while LCDs are nice for browsing the web and anything non-graphic intensive, they still just don't come close to a good CRT monitor for my needs.

Finally, a last resort would be Adobe Photoshop. You can take any map or image and simply resize the image with a much higher resolution (say take a map from 72dpi to 600 or 1200 dpi). If there is enough information in the original image to interpret, this might be a good solution to allowing one to zoom in images and maps for ease of interpretation.

Changing the DPI doesn't really make the image any more high resolution. You'll still end up with pixelation. It works better than simply blowing up an image by zooming in, but it's not going to allow you to actually blow the image up flawlessly.
