  1. Splurge on Fully Functional Nintendo Controller Coffee Table · · Score: 1

You look at the picture in the article and you have to wonder why people in that apartment would drop $3500 on a controller coffee table. We need a /. article about financial responsibility.

  3. Ignorance on Evangelical Scientists Debate Creation Story · · Score: 1

I do so love the fact that people with no critical knowledge of the Bible and little knowledge of evolutionary theory can make such wild claims and accusations. The article headline is sensationalist at that, when you consider that actual content of the article. If you can divorce yourself from your preconceptions, based on theories, unproven and constantly in flux, when it comes to creation and then look at the scientifically derived data in comparison to Genesis narrative of creation, flood, etc. you will find that there is no contradiction. Deciding to take what Stephen Hawking says on faith does not make you intellectually superior than taking what God has to say on faith. I would be more than happy to discuss this further via email for anyone who is interested, although I am not interested in poorly mannered conversation. jlself@cinci.rr.com

  4. Re:You might be missing the point on Utah To Teach USA is a Republic, Not a Democracy · · Score: 1

This is not news for nerds, or stuff that matters, but since we have thrown up the flame bait:
The USA IS a Republic and not a democracy, although it is never taught that way in schools. I think Utah is taking a step in the right direction.

Shouldn't we learn that we have a similar system to what Rome had and then also what happened in Rome once they lost their Republic...It seems that there used to be an old adage about not knowing history and being doomed to repeat it.

  5. RTFNA on Fox News Brings Video Game Violence Debate To a New Low · · Score: 0

    Read The Fox News Article

I am glad to see that /. has fallen into the tired 'look at how bad Fox News is' method of gaining interest in an article rather than letting the content speak for itself. If you read the actual Fox News article it is not the opinion of the article it is the opinion of an expert in the field that claims it is a problem, an opposing view is also expressed so the article takes no sides.

People should stop getting their nickers in a twist just because they have heard a view that is dissenting from whatever preconceived notion that they already may have had.

I do, sort of. I use AutoLISP alot, the command line interface in autocad is heavily incorporated with LISP. It may not be extremely featured, or friendly, but it was my introduction into programing and I still use it today. The libraries are available in Linux, I chuckle every time I see the binaries in debian, so I am sure somebody has programmed something for linux with it recently.

  11. An actual serious reply..... on Establishing an IT Budget for a Small Business? · · Score: 1

The problem with a small buisiness is that the needs are constantly changing, especially in a small business that is growing. Expect a turnover on computers of about 3-4 years depending on how conservative the company is. Then you need to try and predict growth and realize how much money in software and hardware goes into each new user. You also need to determine how much money in software upgrades are required, depeding on the company (ie. an autocad using company) you need to spend a large sum of money every couple of years for every current user. There are really too many variables to get a solid idea but those are some that I would suggest....Remember in a small business improved equipment, new servers, printers, VOIP will be adders that you won't know you need until you do.

  12. not really practical as a primary.... on Fiber Optics Bring the Sun Indoors · · Score: 1

My job involves lighting, and I have seen this technology for a couple of years, however it does have its problems. The obvious problem being that when it is dark or overcast you get little or nothing, remember this is not a solar generator so you do not have the option to charge a battery with it. The second and slightly less obvious problem is snow. If snow builds up on the thing you also get nothing.. Its a good idea for a supplimentary system, however in a home you can usually achieve the same with carefull planning of window locations and skylights.

As a secondary system I think it is a bit moot. there are better generator and solar options available, and in the doomsday scenerio the article paints, you will have bigger problems than light in your kitchen.
