Ok. So it's nice that M$ is starting to 'invent' (well... Ok. Steal old tech that didn't make it at the time). But how about if they try and sell it to do something useful then?

I mean. I navigate with my mouse (err... Trackball). If I wanted the toolbars to go away it would be when I'm not near them or something. It would do no good if they where gone when I wasn't touching the mouse. I am in more need of it when I want to scroll around some document and see if I got it all right. Now if they REALLY want to sell mice that feels when they are touched. They shuld do something like figureing out who is using the mouse and make the system switch to act they way (s)he want's it to act or something else useful (I'm hard pressed to find a good application for touch/release events tho). All this just seems like something M$ would like to sell us and finds a couple of arguments that sounds good if you don't think about them.

Oh well... I'll never give up my trusty trackball... Well... Maybe when they offer me full sensory input and a 3D interface that's usable ;)

Acturlly I a bit proud of you. If places like ZDnet pring a Mac article you can be damed sure that at LEAST half of the 'talkback's are PC loosers trying to convince themselves that Windows is good and there's no reason anyone shuld use anything else (and they do that by saying foul words about Apple and Macs no matter what's in the article).

Anyway it's a pretty fair thing not wanthing to open a HW platform for outsiders (and the last time Apple tried it they where pushed out of maketspace instad of expanding the total). It IS there Apple makes the most of their money.

Try asking Psion or IBM (for their server machines that is) or whoever else who makes non-'standard' computers if they want to open their HW platform and let competitors use their research to take some of their marketshare.

    No.

In C the '!=' is a question (it's an operator. Meaning it will return someting). If it's correct it returns a 'true' value and if not it returns a 'false' value.

THAT makes '!=' to technically a question and not (as it would be in mathematics) an assertion (where it would state in an equation that these too values is NOT the same).

So there you have it. Hope that clears it up.

Personally I think I would let the matematically count. Since I have little use of C operators outside of a source file ;)

  12. WOW USB 2.0..... in 20012 on Is firewire dying? · · Score: 2

Hmmm. And me that thought everyone was able to see through this one when USB 2.0 was first announced. Ah well...

First let's get it clear it's megaBIT not MB (megaBYTE). Meaning that it's going to be about as fast as FireWire is today.

Second USB 2.0 specs was first released just after Apple made it 'expensive' to make FireWire ports.

Third the specs are clearly a bit too ambiguous. They want to make USB both back AND forward compatible on the same cheap (read: low-quality) cables and connectors they use today.

And then there is the fact that USB 2.0 is not going to hit computers before 2001. At that time FireWire should have reached at LEAST 800 megabit (it's in the works).

And finally FireWire is a lot better suited for highspeed transfers since it reserves 20% for datatransfers as opposed to USB's 10% (you can see how that counts on a chain with many devices that makes a lot of isynchronous traffic that's what the other %'es are used for if needed)

    I have to disagree here.

NOW most people don't know what an IP address is. And belive the net works on DNS addresses alone. And that a machine can't serve a webpage without the address starting with 'www.'

So why would it lead to confusion that the addresses are changed? Only network admins and programmers really need to know (and are the only people likely to find out too). And if API developers at various OS makers are just a bit clever. All a program would need is a recompile to work (if it would even need that).

What WILL be fun is when v4 systems and v6 systems are mixed. And that will bring some chaos.

Not that it matters how you measure it as long you use the right numbers. But the 12 number is in BIT's a sec. Try looking at this pice I found at Apple's site (not being able to find a spec on usb.org. You can say alot about Apple. But they don't lie about these things) :

    Performance Comparison.
USB offers data transfer rates of up to 12 megabits per second, more than 1200 times faster than the 10 kilobits per second provided by Apple Desktop Bus ports (shown here as 1 pixel, though the speed actually scales to less than 1/3 pixel) and more than 50 times faster than the 230 kilobits per second of traditional Apple serial ports.
