While I hate Real Networks as much as the next guy. I don't think comparing Apple's including QuickTime with OS X to Microsoft activities is fair, if only because installing alternatives is easy and they do not fight each other over default file opening options like what goes on with windows...
So I can easily use QuickTime with the files it supports and VLC for others and restrict Windows Media Player for listening to NPR (I really like All Songs Considered). I never have
That's the impression I got which is the exact opposite to my experience with all the other OSS projects I've tinkered with. Typically I get a faster, more detailed response than with 'professional' tech support services I have contracts with. That includes my experience with NetBSD and I thought that the BSD guys were supposed to be hostile and arrogant.
In response to the other reply: I have plenty of time and am certainly willing to rewrite their FAQ, however I doubt they'd except input from someone who has never built or even installed their project
OK... The whole reason I read the NeoOffice/C FAQ is that I have had "experience with poorly coded apps in the past". But when I got there it came off being "OO.org is severely incompatible with OS X" sort of thing. That gave me the impression that a native OO.org was an uphill battle at best and a fool's errand at worst.
(Not that the guys doing this are fools)
Some where some said aquify Koffice which sounds sort of intriguing. My massive investigation (Google: "OS X" Native Koffice) in to this is tantalizing but essentially turned up nothing concrete (as in most stuff was about a year old). Maybe I'll download the source and compile it and see what happens, it can't hurt.
I don't get it. Why did they come up with a version in C (even if it was a hack or a planning tool) and then a version in Java? What does "fundamental mismatches between OpenOffice.org and Cocoa technologies" mean. What about using Carbon instead?
I got the impression that OO.org is basically OS X unfriendly and that won't change... is that correct?
Also I am the only one who thinks that the tone of NeoOffice/J FAQ is fairly unfriendly and angy?
When I was in college I read an article on hooking up an IBM selectric to an IBM PC's (8086 I think) parallel port. Been a while, I don't remember much. Your idea sounds fun, and ideal for a pic.
Have fun!

I'm semi-retired (I work part time). I've found that most weeks I swing by the lab 5 days for a few hours to make sure everything is OK and then go screw around in the afternoon. It gets me out bed doings things. That's not to say I always do that, I just finished working my 2nd 45 hour week so I can travel for the next 25 days.
My Mum & sisters I have covered with Apple Remote Desktop. I have a couple of friends in the US that more of a Dean of IT disipline to make sure they're on the straight & Kazzaa free path.
So I'll be trying this over the holidays... Thanks
I was speaking to an American friend, who lives in Atlanta, recently. He was complaining about this very thing. He owns & manages a variety of types of property which he leases out to people who run bars, restaurants, small businesses, warehouses, and even churches. Occasionally, he has tenants 'disappear' and when he goes down to inspect the property he finds evidence of drug related activities (i.e. rows of HPS lighting, hydroponic setups, and my favorite: money counters). So generally to keep it of his back he reports it and has the police come in and take it all in as evidence. Recently, during one of these events the investigating officer arrested him using a little known local law (either Fulton or DeKalb county) which required the owner of the property to report any illegal activities taking place on their properties. The law is so grey that they make no attempt to deal with whether or not the property owner is knowledgeable or a participant. In effect they demand that all property owners become investigators / informants.
During college, years ago, I happened to find a quite good source. LSD became my drug of choice for most of my college career. All in all I suppose I've consumed thousands of doses and I can recall a couple of parties where most people there had consumed 50~75 'doses' that night. After finishing college and moving away from the source I found that what's on the street to be a pale imitation and a disappointment, so I gave it up...
I still have my Ph.D.; I still have a part time job in my field; I don't suffer from "flashbacks", reduced mental capacity, or addiction. In fact I'm really enjoying my early semi-retirement.
Come to think of it, I've never have met anyone who has suffered any of the problems that LSD has been accused of causing. That's not to say they've never happened, just to say that's it's typical for the FDA to A: Not like recreational drugs and B: not to like a drug that no corporation is making money on.
Partial Discloser: I work for one the "Big Pharma" companies
There are several ways to add large scale storage to a PowerMac
One is essentially a 3 drive rack which has the drives standing up in the back of the bottom of the box so it doesn't obstruct airflow (Search for" G5 bracket"; this is sort of what I have done). You do have to add a PCI-X RAID card.
The other is to add an PCI-X RAID card and an external box with a separate power supply and have the SATA wires going out back of the PowerMac to them.
The third way is just buy a firewire / USB hard drive. Someone, I can't remember who, offers a 500 gig twin drive firewire box.
I take a lot of panorama landscape pictures so I want / need big drives.
I would have bought a 1/2 Xserve if it was available, REALLY!
But I suppose I couldn't really notice the difference between fibre Channel Xserve raid drives and firewire box.
By most are my own landscape photos: RAW + TIFF + Photshop layers + Final jpeg = A LOT or in trollish Many, Many, Many
But you too could have this many porn photos just befriend http://slashdot.org/~Porn%20Whitelist/ and checkout his journal. Which is turning out to funny & educational
The eMac is the only device on that list I've had contact with. My Mum and little sister have an eMac & iMac respectivly. Neither of them play games but my Nieces & Nephews do and they seem pretty OK with both systems. Neither of them are even close to filling up the hard drive. Both went to a computer shop on their own to compare prices and had the sales guy tell them that the $499 loss leader PC was worse than useless and that they needed to spend $999.
Also I have a Dual G5 PowerMac with a total of 1.3 Terabytes of digital photos which I don't have a problem moving about with GigE or Firewire. Hasn't this guy ever heard of Firewire, USB and Ethernet?
I have to wonder how real is the rest of the list?
Wait! I have one of those PowerMacs and I SAW a hose in there when I added the second hard drive (OK I did poke around a little more than just that) and it was bigger than the SATA cable:)
Ahh so... then I suppose it would be just short of an act of war. GWB may be the world's biggest prat, and symbol for all that is wrong with america. But I'm not seeing my government invading the US over GPS signals.
This is just another example of the US Administration being a bigger asshat than really needed
I'm a fan of Ursula Le Guin, I've got all of her books and many I've read more than once. I don't live in the US anymore and I had to download it just to watch it. I've just started it and Quit after 10 minutes. I have to say it's a real let down. The acting of his father is so poor it's worse than off hour all excess cable. There is gratuitous sex involving a character who not only has no contact with men but dislikes them. Slashdot readers are a more threatening mob that the Kargish warriors. The fog scene, please, tell me they nicked it from something the Dr. Who crew filmed and then decided not to air. Worst there is no evidence that anyone involved with the project has actually read the book (which there is more to than swords, magic and sex). The CGI looks like my 8 year old daughter did it with her friends. I haven't read Ursula's comments yet but I'm not surprised at all that she objected, race plays an important role in Earthsea because is juxtaposes the very stereo types you are whining about. There is a difference between the Kargs (white Viking types) and the people of Gont (swarthy dark skinned, types), that's why other characters are prejudiced against Duny(Folks didn't go bandying about people's real names in public) to begin with.a very important aspect of the book. The main character doesn't even have a name until Ogion gives him one (i.e he reaches puberty) yet he's shaging the best looking girl in the village before hand (I wish I had been so lucky).
While I own all of her books I don't feel like I am some sort irrational Ursula K Le Guin fan fan boy... I own signed 1st editions of all of Frank Herbert's works and enjoyed that recent series. I own everything related Tolkien that has ever been published (alas no 1st addition signed copies) and enjoyed animated movie and the recent series of movies (but morned the removal of Tom Bombadil, while understanding it). But the changes to Earthsea are unnecessary and don't makes sense. It's as if the script writers said 'we know better', while they most obviously did not.
As a side note I have the BBC radio drama of Earthsea which is really, really good (and low budget in a Dr. Who sort of way).
Another side note I do NOT own a TV and haven't for over 25 years, as I am not impressed with TV programming in general.
Still based on the first 10 minutes of this crap I urge everyone to ditch it and read the books or listen to BBC version...
.
Last comment really! Many authors are not whores and are interested in more than sales of their books, many years ago when reading up on everything Earthsea I came to the conclusion that she was one of these sorts of authors.
After reading a lot of the posts previous posts I am mystified at all the negative juvenile drivel. ReactOS _is_ an interesting project and has many interesting implications. I downloaded it and tinkered with it the last time it came up in discussion.
What gets me is that this is not the first discussion this month where the negative juvenile drivel gave me pause but more like the tenth or twentieth. I wonder is Slashdot really degrading this fast or finally after 40 years am I growing up?

Oh and you're right on about Winamp

How difficult is this to install on a windows box? Can I talk a complete idiot in the US through it from Europe?
Welcome to post 911 America

I downloaded what I (little) watched. The commericals must have been the best parts.
