    On a related note, humans actually have iron in their noses which helps to naturally determine the way - kind of a built in compass.. Hence your guess is often close to correct

    True, I may also have a handheld GPS unit, but what if it's batteries run out or it falls 200 feet down a rocky slope or I drop it in a lake?
    Ignoring the battery part, the same thing that happens if you drop your compass 200 feet down a rocky slope or drop it in a lake - it doesn't work anymore.

    The poster wants them to pay for data recovery off the failed media.. I doubt that will happen

    Tape drives are anything but cheap, in all my research. Drives cost a lot for anything semi-reliable, and once you've got this drive, it probably won't backup a single hard drive on one tape.
    Most new drives these days seem to be at least 12/24GB from what I've seen.. Though it won't do your 120GB drive full of MP3's etc, it will do your system partition, or a partition of db data quite nicely...

    They fired some token IT people but they weren't the ones responsible for the server as they did not have keys to the room where the backups would/should of been made and had dutifully been buying zip disks for them that sat unused in stacks on top of the server. Iomega sucks the donkey wang big time when it comes to reliability.
    Righttttttttttttttt, Iomega sucks for reliability because the company bought zip disks and sat them on top of the server. Last time I checked this wasn't the preferred method for backing up to zip disks..
    Sounds like the company is the one that sucked for reliability...

    Which begs the question, why are comment posters not being paid per comment, considering they make the content.

    Actually, the temperature goes through periods of hot and cold approximately 200 years long. Also, we are right at the peak of the 200 year hot period at the moment. This has happened again and again.

    A non profit organisation does not neccesarily mean nobody who works there makes money. People there can get nice fat paychecks, the company itself does not turn a profit, all excess funds go back into itself.

    Where I'm from we get people saying the same shit year after year..
    "It's so hot! Why is it so hot! It wasn't this hot last year! We'll all die soon!" etc etc..
    Yet, year after year, there is a week or so of hot hot weather (around 40-45C). The only thing that changes is when the week occurs (it randomly chooses a time in summer, or so it appears..)
    If you ask me people overreact to this all the time

    Nah, $5 is fuck all money, but I hear you need a checking account etc to set up a paypal account, of which I do not have one.. either way I have never bothered to look at paypal.com, or even thought about signing up :)

    Shareware is essentially cheap to free advertising. The company can publish the shareware version, and people can download it a little cost to the company. Some people may rip it off, some people may pay. My guess is the people who rip it off would not have bought it in the first place, so no money is lost.

    I haven't paid for any, I just use them in shareware type mode. Not because I am cheap but because even for $5 I could not be fucked going to paypal and opening an account to pay. at $5 credit card is not worth it either.

    my software doesn't particularly need to be free (either free as in beer, or free as in "free the animals!") I don't have a problem paying ONCE for something, but when it gets to pay per month, free software may be the choice..
