  1. Grey Areas before? on On Making Videogame Heroes, Villains Realistic · · Score: 1

Actually. I think that the whole issue of villains being good AND bad goes back to Marvel comics. Before their leap to the forefront in the sixties, most comic characters were either very good or very evil. With FF, Hulk, and especially Spider-Man, you saw heros that didn't always win, and villains who weren't totally evil. That is part of the reason that they were so successful and have been, is that drawing such a Black/White distinction isn't totally believeable to most people who mimic the characters by being good and bad.

Fascinating. I didn't know that someone could patent a game that predates their very existence on this planet. Guess it's time for me to start trying to patent a computer version of Jousing or Gladitorial Combat or something

  3. Japan + on How Do You Become A Console Game Programmer? · · Score: 1

On actually doing the Japanese thing, I have actually spoken with one of the lead recruiters from Nintendo's Redmond headquarters. Her comment was that they don't hire Americans in Japan. Maybe here in America.. in their 1 office... but that's it. I would focus more on North America, Europe and the growing player, Australia.

Well, in my school, gaming is taken seriously as well. However, if you want to program for games, you do need to study them. This doesn't mean playing them 24-7, but there is a balance that can be reached. If you never play any games, and want to program them, how can you be sure you aren't simply reinventing the wheel?

Nice article, and good posts, but the thing that people fail to realize is that programming is only part of the equation. Being able to work in a team environment and commincate with your peers is just as important than programming. If you can't tell somone what you coded, how can they help you or vice versa?

  6. Trillian on Will Instant Messaging Ever Unite? · · Score: 1

Well, Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc) doesn't exactly get the programs to talk to each other, but it does united them under one umbrella. I've been using it for a few months and it help with the people I have who won't go to a different IM program.

So let me see if I have this right, If the jokes are over the top, they are unfunny, and /. will get flamed. If the jokes are subtle, and people believe them for awhile, and then find out they're false, they'll flame. I personally found the jokes today to be either hit and miss, a couple were funny, a couple were not. I think that some people at /. need to remove their funny bone and beat the flamers about their head and asses.

It seems to me that due to your cult status, that there seems to be a big buzz anytime your name is mentioned in relation to a movie or project. I've noticed that on your website you have a section devoted to trying to clear up what is true and untrue about your work. I guess my question is do you truly enjoy the fans reaction towards you and try to keep up with the rumors or do you get annoyed sometimes and wish you could be more private.

I have noticed that there are becoming more and more politicians who are at least a little computer savvy (This is not to say that there still aren't quite a lot on the Hill). What are some of the ways that you go about educating the people on Capitol Hill about what is going on?

I'm not sure if SDL already does this, but is SDL planning on doing something along the lines of Direct Input in order to get things like force feedback joysticks, and rarely used controllers (i.e., Steering wheels, PC Light Guns) to be easily put into a game?
