that's my job man. tisn't easy either. At least not any easier than any other OS specific API I've ever programmed for.

Also, you mention that Windows sells more than all other OSes combined. This is true. Then you have to go on to say that the market is who set the price and chooses the OS. Tisn't so, sorry, just isn't. Most of the "market" doesn't even realize that anything else exists... mostly because of billions spent on marketing and because most people didn't even buy a computer until after MS had a deal with every major manufacturer for their "win9x" crap. If people knew there was a choice perhaps they'd change their mind.

It's funny that you bother bringing this up. From what I remember nvidia was a really big nobody and 3dfx was the only real power in the 3D gaming market for YEARS. When 3dfx began to fail in keeping up with the times (think banshee, voodoo3 era)... they got run over. Simple as that.
Also, when nvidia "bought 3DFX", they didn't buy the whole thing... only key assets... certain things that they wanted. Nvidia has said from the VERY BEGINNING that they did not take responsibility for supporting 3dfx's product lines. Anyone who expected them too anyway was either not listening or just plain dense. It simply wouldn't have made sense for them to do so.

So do whatever you like, buy ATI, buy Nvidia, buy 3DLabs, whatever... just get your facts at least relatively in order before you whine about them. (and it might be a good idea to check benchmark data before claiming one card is better than another)

Remove all instances of "hide" in the file. Save the file. Now open up the Add/Remove Programs dialogue from the control panel and then go to the Add/Remove Windows Components section. See how much extra stuff you can actually install/uninstall there? (including IE). Frankly, Windows is crap without IE IMHO... but it's not much better with it so give it a go if you like... One of our first ideas was Solaris, but as the tribe was far from willing to put out the money for a decent Sparc we were forced to stick to the x86 version. Unfortunately, although we tried 12 different machines that conformed to the Solaris HCL 100%, we were not once able to get the operating system up and running successfully. Each time when the machine finally booted (after several hours spent poking through one installer segment after the other (and trying to get the netscape kiosk whatsit to behave properly))... anyway... when the machine finally booted, the X server started and the machine froze hard. This is regardless of configuration. We tried IDE and SCSI, for video we tried Nvidia then ATI then S3 then 3dlabs. For network cards we tried everything from an Realtek 8139 (ew) to a 3com 3c905C. No matter what we tried we got the same result. Unfortunately the tribe then decided to spend 80K (4x what I make per year) on a huge rackmount compaq server with NT4 preinstalled. Grr to Solaris x86. That's all I have to say.
