IMO, the automatic updates and package management should be used by sysadmins that know what they are doing in the first place. I learned from compiling source code and it's helped me out a lot over the years.

As far as security updates for packages that are included in Slack, what's so hard about downloading it and typeing:

    upgrade newpackage.tgz

Personally, I don't trust something that "updates itself".

Don't even get started about Linux on the desktop for the newbies. It's not ready yet...but that's another discussion entirely.

  3. Ah, Slackware... on Is Slackware Fading Away? · · Score: 1

I've used Slackware forever. It was my first Linux install around 6 years ago and it's never failed me since. I tried RedHat and a few others, but they were just too fluffy for my liking. KISS is a great philosophy that most people don't apprieciate anymore.

There is already such a product. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition. Now all you need to do is a get a stack of these, a stack of Compaq servers and you're set.

Of course, you may need to win the lottery first...

It was DS9, actually. "Trials and Tribble-ations."

    Odo: "THOSE are Klingons??"

Worf: "We do not discuss it with outsiders."

Actually, it was one of the only good DS9 episodes. Me? I prefer TNG and Voyager. And I'm not that much of a geek...I got the episode via DiVX a week ago.

I live one county north of Davidson County, NC...aka Hegeland. Sherriff Hege is the fucking man. Crime is WAY down because he doesn't take any shit. Look at his success before you make uneducated comments. I haven't heard anything about Hege dragging *INNOCENT* people out of their homes and beating them...and I live close by. Drug dealers? I am a web developer for a major band with a brand new website going live in a day or two. We support everyone...including Lynx. Yes, it took some extra work, but it wasn't worth blocking the 30%+ users that use Lynx, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, etc. That's potential CUSTOMERS that you block. I feel the same way about that Flash shit. Not everyone bothers installing that fluff. I like Netscape and Mozilla, so that's my primary devel platforms, but MSIE is also well-tested and WORKING. Even Lynx is tested! It's not pretty under Lynx, but it fucking WORKS.
