  1. Re:Don't like bats? on Insect-Devouring Bats Now Welcomed in New York (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

Mostly irrational fear but rabies can be a valid concern.

I don't really mind them, but my most recent encounter was one on my back porch. I opened the door one night and it startled me as it flew away very quickly. I wouldn't mind a bat-house in the back yard that kept them at arms length but I am glad they don't make a habit of roosting right by my back door.

And most people who I told about it cautioned me to check for bites because it's possible it bit me and I just didn't feel it. It didn't bite me and I didn't get rabies.

Every few years or so people get interested in bats either because mosquitoes are particularly bad one year or fears of West Nile and now Zika.

  2. Citibank on Why Tech Support Is (Purposely) Unbearable · · Score: 2

long story shortened. I spent nearly an hour and a half on hold waiting for Citibank's fraud department this weekend before I could cancel my card due to the number being stolen. They assured me FedEx would deliver one today (4th of July), but FedEx doesn't deliver on Independence Day. I didn't really believe that part anyway

I was quite angry when I finally got hold of someone, but I didn't take it out on her. She said they were still reeling from their CostCo Visa fiasco. I did try to politely tell her that I was very pissed off, but didn't blame her personally. She sounded very overworked. Getting angry at her would not have helped the situation. I am going to start using cash more though.....

Typically when I have to call Citibank for any reason it only takes about 2 minutes to get a human being on the phone. I'm still stunned by how badly they've screwed up. I don't have a CostCo Visa but my long hold time was a full 10 days after the first news reports of their problems with that came out and that's their excuse.

  3. Perhaps. You made me think of Randall Leece Deal, an actor in Deliverance who GWB pardoned for moonshining.

    Bush pardons moonshining 'Deliverance' actor

"I was just helping some friends back then," he said. "It was really just more like a game than anything, to be honest with you. It wasn't a big business deal, fiddling with moonshine. At least to me it wasn't."

I'm sure being in a very well known movie didn't hurt. The article doesn't explain Bush's reasoning in pardoning him, but my take on it when it happened was the crime, while illegal wasn't that big of a deal and he had lived several decades since then as a reasonably good law-abiding citizen. If he had been convicted of other crimes since then I'm guessing he wouldn't have gotten the pardon. I'm just speculating of course.

You mean 40 down and 5 up?

I have CenturyLink too and I just had to accept a 12-month contract to get similar pricing.

This is after my last promotional deal expired and I was suddenly paying nearly $80 a month

I somehow don't believe they're not making money at $30 a month, so imagine the profit at nearly $80 a month.

If you're willing to complain and threaten to quit Comcast, they'll give you a deal too, but it will expire and soon you'll be way overpaying again.

It is a lack of competition and even though CL's speeds are more than adequate for me it seems that Comcast has got most of the country believing they need blazing fast internet speeds or they won't be able to check Twitter or Facebook without agonizingly long delays. A duopoly is not much better than a monopoly but at least I can threaten to quit and go back to comcast (shudder).

And in 11 more months I'll be calling CL back up to renegotiate a more fair price once again. As much as I hate them, if they don't give it to me I will be calling Comcast.

Apparently putting "DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE" on them is common practice.

Here's a story where the utility company put one on their own pole: Mysterious Camera in The Neighborhood

And does the picture on this page look like it's anything "High Voltage"? Covert Video Surveillance System

It seems reckless to start putting "Danger: High Voltage" on things that aren't really dangerous (physically anyway) or high voltage. Some people will stop believing signs like that and just start investigating anything with such a warning - just to see if it's a camera or something.

It is because it caters to a minority that is often the object of hate crimes. If it were a Jewish nightclub and this happened they'd probably mention it was Jewish. If it was a club for young teens they'd mention that. If you just say nightclub it suggests there's no specific demographic that goes there. LGBTQ people would want to know that information. It also happened during Pride week. Like it or not, it's relevant.
