Except I'd like to know about what's *IN* the file and be able to search on that, not just by the filename.

  2. UNIX "desktop search engines"? on Desktop Search Tools Will Help Virus Writers · · Score: 1

I have been wanting something to catalogue my home directory, and what I've been leaning towards is the metadata filesystem, or the Gnome "storage" system, or the KDE system. However, getting my existing documents in there would take a lot of time.

So is there an equivalent tool that will search through your UNIX home directory and help you find documents that match a certain criteria? rgrep just doesn't cut it for me - I've been collecting stuff in there since 1988.

Hmmm. My experience was different. I'm taking MS-CIS classes and there is definitely more management than CS. All the time I kept fighting the feeling, "Why are they trying to turn me into an asshole?"

The problem with Legos now is that first, they are so damn expensive, and two, they aren't "generic" enough. The kits are made to be built into one "thing", whether it's a jungle or a spaceship or a whatever. You can use your imagination to make it into other things, but you're fairly limited. Instead, give me a big box of Legos from my childhood, where they aren't so specialized, and imagination is more important.

Good point - labels are important to make the pictures "worth" last. As a genealogist, I worry about this constantly. How do I keep the metadata with the pictures?

But think about it - would you be interested in your great-grandparent's vacation pictures? Sure! If they were labelled...

I think there's something here that is escaping most of the /. readers. Filemaker has a nice GUI for creating applications - RAD type functionality. We're not talking about a GUI to manage a mysql database. I'd like to be able to create an application that uses a database backend quickly. Something like Oracle Forms & Reports of old, or Access, or ??? Think "glade" + "mysql/postgresql" + perl's report writing

I've been looking for something like this in the OSS world for years, and in that time, like the author of the article, could have written one.

But is there a way to sync from Yahoo calendars/contacts etc. to your PDA without going through outlook? It seems like IntelliSync will sync to outlook, but what about removing outlook from the equation and somehow syncing directly from your palm/visor/whatever to Yahoo?

  8. Don't forget about vservers on An Introduction to Virtualization · · Score: 1

Don't forget about Linux Vservers. They allow you to have multiple virtual machines running on a single physical machine, all separated for security reasons. So you could run ftp on one, and a web server on another, and they would be as separate as physical machines. Also, I use VMware daily to run office-type applications, Outlook, and Remedy. I'm forced to by my employer, and the VMware solution let's me keep my regular linux wrapper around windows. Also, since the vpn connection takes control of the box, I still have "real" network access with my linux box.

  9. Sakar/Yahoo wireless keyboard on Wireless Keyboard w/o a Wireless Mouse? · · Score: 1

I have one of these and like it pretty well. It doesn't have a separate mouse, but has a mouse-like controller on it, but can be ignored. It doesn't require line of sight, and has a nice range. I bought it for use in a media station type application. My one reservation is the hackability of the unit - security is supposedly an issue (listening in on your typing).

Not to mention that Qwest is a DSL provider. That means that in areas that Qwest controls, and has put Rhythms and Northpoint out of business, it's your only choice for DSL. So if you want DSL, you have to have MSN.
