  2. This guys about to years late. on Self-Adapting Traffic Lights · · Score: 2, Informative

In my area traffic lights respond to a number of different input.

First off Lights are geared by the time of day. There many high traffic situations where traffic is high on certain streets so the lights regulate traffic accordingly.

The rest of the day the lights rely on a combination of pressure censors and lamination levels to determine how many cars are waiting at a particular intersection. In some instances pressure sensors are installed several yards before the intersection to being cycling the lights early.

Finally our city vehicles (with the exception of police, as we are county.) have triggers to over ride the lights at any given time. So ambulances and fire trucks always have the lights working in there favor.

I recommend TeamTrack by Serena software. Even though the licensing comes at a steep price, it's much simpler to configure, and far more robust in features. Plus they offer licensing that scales to any sized company.

What the hell do Cognac glasses and DVDs have in common? Since when can I buy DVDs in sets of 10? When I buy a DVD I get one copy in the box. Often for anywhere from $25 - $35 bucks a pop and I only get ONE copy of the movie. Sure there are some RARE examples like Who Framed Rodger Rabbit that comes with two copies of the movie. But each version is distinctly different.

And when's the last time you got to shop around for DVDs? I don't mean preordering on Amazon. I mean Do we get to choose out brand of movie for a better price? There's a big difference if I want to buy my Cognac glasses from Nordstrom's or Target. Perhaps Jack Valenti is implying we compare prices between DVDs and VCDs and make our choice? I may not get 10 VCDs but at least I'm getting a better price. Not that the quality is anywhere near the same.

  12. Re:" but what's it god for?" on Alternative GameCube GBA Adapter Launched · · Score: 1

That's an easy one. Because the GBA uses an LCD screen it refreshes differently then a normal TV. I have found playback with a standard TV to be jittery or jerky. Screens do not scroll smoothly and characters jitter a bit as they walk off screen.

This is virtually eliminated in progressive scan playback. Creating much smoother game play and player animation.

This might not be a big deal to some users but my eyes tent to be sensitive to subtitle jittering. Prolonged gaming like this makes me feel a little nocuous at times. Or maybe I'm just sitting to close to the TV!? DAMN you mom!

    1) Does it scale the image to fit the screen properly? The GBA Player leaves an annoying 1-2" border around the screen
    2) Does is offer progressive scan like the Official Nintendo unit? If this is missing, forget it!
    3) Does it require a special boot disk? This would truly be a deciding factor as I hate swapping to the GBA player boot disk

Yes, I posted this on the site too, but it's rare for me to write as much on any subject so I thought I would share.

As a kid I ha a number of these game and watch systems, including the double screen donkey Kong. Portable gaming ever since has been a big part of my daily life.

I had a GameBoy at launch. I think the price was about $89, and it came with Tetris. I was instantly fascinated ability to swap games just like my NES! I must have been 11 years old or so, and $89 was no small amount of money.

With a little convincing (and a lot of annoyance) My mother got me a game boy right at launch. I still have it, with all the games. It's in immaculate condition. The GameBoy traveled with me every where. To school, Vacations or even just as far as my back yard. No I wasn't a very active child.

As the 16 Bit era ushered out the 8 bit cpu the market changed, as did the portable gaming scene. With it came my favorite gaming system, and portable of all time. The NEC Turbo Grafx 16! The Turbo Grafx 16 never had enough respect state side. Its Japanese counterpart the PC Engine was a phenomenal success in Japan. Because of this it spawned of several variations of the hardware including the PC Engine Core systems, The PC Engine Shuttle, PC Engine LT, Super Grafx and the PC Engine GT!

Ah the PC Engine GT. Other wise known as the Turbo Express. Was, and a way still is the best portable game system ever made. It wasn't a complete dog on battery life like the Lynx (which I did enjoy but never owned.) It featured dimensions similar to the GameBoy with an active matrix screen. The best since passed or present ever featured on a portable game system. Sure it had a few poor pixels but it was better looking and more visible then even the GameBoy Advance SP.

I loved this system! It played the same games as my Turbo Grafx 16 and was light years ahead of my game boy. Sadly its high price of $299 (back in 1992) was and still is restrictive. I just could not justify traveling with such a pricy pricey of tech. Because of this it mostly stayed at home.

Now I am a happy owner of the GameBoy Advance (Both the classic and SP.) Its low price point makes it "disposable" and I do so much commuting. It's also the best showcase for some of the best 16 bit 2D gaming the 90's had to offer. With new classic like Advance Wars and Final Fantasy : Tactics, the GBA continues to be one of my all time favorite gaming systems only matched by the failed yet amazing NEC Super Grafx.
