    No, it's not you, most of the entries are horrible "poetry". Read some real haiku. Westerners don't "get" haiku, they just think any syllables can be strung together. Frankly, for comedy I prefer the limerick, but the nonexistent skill it takes to produce a bad haiku seems to indicate that limericks will languish for some time yet.

    Yeah, and when you finally make them understand there's been a mugging, they can write out a confession for you to sign...you are a foreigner, after all, and you're always at fault in any possible situation.

    According to one of my English students who works for a major manufacturer, later this year a new Japanese cell phones will be released that have the Suica card functionality built in. Then, you won't even have to take the thing out of your pocket to get past the gate.


    Make no mistake about the Japanese economy, though...it's in the doldrums with no way out. The highest American national debt during the Reagan years was $4 trillion, when Ronnie was emptying the treasury to bury the Commies. The current Japanese national debt is $6 trillion.

    I say let 'em have it. The only issue is the possible backlash, and I say heck with it, they're obviously being bad netizens. There's really no discussion to be had.

    Other than all the haters posting about 'is usenet still around'...jeez usenet threads are almost as offtopic with haters as the sendmail ones...

    Yeah, it always pissed me off that SSI's Eye of the Beholder series was a straight ripoff of Dungeon Master, only adapted to the D&D rules. DM's spellcasting system actually MADE SENSE. Although I never did find the zokathra spell, I found out about it through my roommate.

    I can summarize 90% of the comments in this story right now:

    • Sendmail sucks! Anything this old sucks by definition. Grep, TCP/IP, sendmail, ping all suck.
    • Switch to qmail! Qmail has no features, and it is written by a psychotic...why haven't you switched yet?
    • Switch to MS Exchange! You get calendaring, for God's sake!
    • Switch to $ANOTHER_MAILER_THAT_IS_NOT_SENDMAIL. Only sendmail has security holes! Other mailer software doesn't have holes.
    Anyone else?

    The unspoken assumption to most (all?) media stories is that the U.S. is bad, mmkay, and the U.S. military is worse, mmkay. Undoubtedly that was the unspoken subtext in this story.

    You're completing the levels too slowly. If you move reasonably fast and eat every non-toxic monster you come across, you should be fine. Dying from starvation is a problem for newbies.

    At least Nethack can stack more than one item on a space. Also it doesn't have that slot machine/pachinko machine appeal that is Angband's main feature.

    I'd do it for $100 per head, plus air travel expenses. Plus ammunition expenses...those hand-loaded .44 magnum rounds get expensive after the first dozen or so.

    Great! Now Joe User can produce "professional-quality" videos. Ones that are about as "professional-looking" as the web pages produced by Microsoft Front Page Express, or the default presentations produced by Microsoft PowerPoint. Hooray!

    Video editing is a specialized enterprise. Not anything close to Joe User. Don't get me wrong, I think that 64-bit applications are great. But I remember a few years back when my company ported all its apps from 32-bit Solaris to 64-bit Solaris. There wasn't much performance benefit, if any. And of course, only the PC platform is suceptible to the ridiculous 4GB memory limitation.

    64-bit computing has been around forever, just not on the PC platform. It's really not a big deal. And as for the desktop? There's no need whatsoever, as any performance benefits will be offset by the cost of change. I'm sure the Quake-playing twits will scream bloody murder, but the rest of us won't even notice.
