Well, that's the problem, see? The Hugo is a widely known award, the kind of thing they put on book jackets, and it gets repeated in the press a lot, as the press tends to repeat anything you fax to them. The very few dorks that voted have a loud megaphone to speak from.
Besides, who has $200 to spend on something dumb like that? Sure, you'd get to vote, but then you'd have to be around a lot of pretentious peter-pan types who wear boat shoes with jeans, and you'd be bored stiff because you're not in the industry. Rather similar to sending a cosmetologist to attend a car dealers convention.
The pen-and-paper system works, and works every time, does it not? That's more than could be said of a PC-based ATC running visual basic apps. I feel a lot better knowing my fate is in the hands of men with green screens and pencils than I would if they were sporting dirty mouseballs and windows keyboards.
Just remember that America Is Always Wrong, and you and your fellow Chomskyites will have a unchallenging and intellectually safe journey through life.
It really screws up a comment to say with one breath that these people are human beings with the very same potential that we all have, and turn right around and say, no, I'm kidding, these people are NOT in fact equal humans, but subhumans who practice incest and do not have any potential whatsoever. As long as you're ridiculing American Southerners, it's OK though. Taking cheap shots at the expense of the white underclass has been socially acceptable for centuries, and such people are certainly unprotected by politically correct thought.
Actually, the fact that the U.S. ATC relies on "dated" technology may be the reason it's so successful. Can you imagine replacing a Vax or somesuch that's done its job faithfully for the last 20 years without a single reboot, with a modern Windows solution? I wince to think what happens the first time they get a system error, or someone mails klez to one of the ATC's, or worse.
You realize, of course, that the trailer park comment completely negated your entire argument? I would say that rural trailer trash are pretty darn "opportunistically challenged", as much so as any rural Laotian. Of course, I forget it's completely acceptable among the university-educated to make such bigoted comments.
No, it means a heretofore unspoiled area will be polluted by the Western world's cultural waste. You can't be expected to have a fulfilling life without popup ads, spyware, and KDE crashes, yes? What happens the first time the Laotians fall for an online pyramid scheme, and mail off a year's wages to a mail drop in Singapore? More technology creates problems, it never solves them.
Yeah - I can't wait until the most remote, hitherto untouched by technology regions of the world get internet access. Yes, life is not complete until they have access to receive (and send) spam, access to online gambling, addictive online games (imagine mom putting her kids to work on the cycle so she can play a MUD all day instead of harvesting crops), racist propaganda, intolerant flame wars in forums, and access to as many transvestite tearoom webcams as possible.
Oh, and a credit card to pay for it all. Or at least someone else's credit card number.
Hey hey...we don't need anyone's real-world experience here. The fact is, Westerners are evil and third world are virtuous. Anyone offering a viewpoint that contradicts this dogma is a heretic, and is eligible to be moderated as flamebait.
Spam is not a "fact of life", nor any kind of "natural" force. It is an anomaly, an effect of the fact that the recipient pays the cost of the message, nothing more. Buh.
Come on...tattoos are all about rebellion and being different. Now that tattoos have caught on, it's not enough to just have a tattoo. Frankly, the current inks in use are rather dull...getting a tattoo isn't as enticing as it used to be. Vivid colors will attract new ensure the tattoo trend keeps going strong. They didn't always have 20 pages of documentation for tattoo supplies, that's the invention of a self-serving government regulatory agency. Or do you not think tattoos were availible before the latter 20th century?;)
I thought I'd also take this chance to give a link to a good list of tattoo artists, if you happen to be in the San Francisco Bay area.
Yes, I agree completely. Europeans are always far more advanced than Americans, in every conceivable way. Americans are not only primitive, but actively hazardous, as you noted above. American emergency rooms treat thousands every year..people who couldn't overcome their uncontrollable impulse to grab the dangerously exposed metal during the process of plug insertion.
Amen to that. I just can't wait until the broadcast networks start showing hard-core pornography in prime time. After all, it's not perverted, it's natural. I understand Europe already has this...they're so much more advanced than Americans in every conceivable way, don't you think?
RJ-45 is a connector, not a cable. RJ-45 can be connected to a number of different cables, category 5 is the most common for PC networks. The 4-wire cable used for telephones has nothing whatsoever to do with the RJ-11 connector. God save us all from cluebie linux dweebos. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Frankly, it might be better if they just skipped that altogether, and renamed the product. Half the comments on here are people trashing the product just because it's named, "Netscape".

Hey, didn't you read the article? The anti-google guy is an old 60s-style anti-establishment leftist. If you don't agree with him, you're a FASCIST, MAN! You're just HELPING THE SYSTEM keep us down! Google is undemocratic just like CAPITALISM is undemocratic! It's shameful that the top search result on google doesn't list his site higher, and something MUST BE DONE!
To Salon's discredit, they appear to agree with this idiot, evidently finding some sort of nostalgia in his fact-averse crusade.
It doesn't matter - it was just a fluff news story designed to make people feel good, with a suitably spunky heroine. It's in the national media and forms part of our culture now. Wouldn't be surprised to see art films next year about misunderstood young women getting hit by meteorites.
wouldn't be terribly suprised if there was a project out there somewhere (shouldn't be TOO hard to do anyway) to basically turn a bunch of RAM into an IDE drive.
I agree with the data but disagree on the analysis. WP 6 was basically WP 5.1, with a WYSIWYG interface...there was nothing horribly wrong with it that turned people off, in my experience. Just mild disappointment that the new version didn't have many new features.
MS Office, at the time, was a prescription for crash and bluescreen hell. I temped at a government agency, and they had large documents that regularly stressed the application's ability to stay up for more than a few minutes.
I don't miss WYSIWYG being a buzzword, not at all.

Ring, ring...phone's for you. They say the call is regarding pots, kettles, and the color black.

But hey, none of this matters...what matters is appealing to one's own sense of political correctness, yes?
Oh, for gosh sake...hiring people to do a job is "inhuman"? Much better for the people to be without both internet access and jobs. Sigh...liberals...

I was speaking of elemental Chlorine, Cl2, not chlorine in compounds.
No living thing will ever develop a resistance to being doused in chlorine.
Cl is pretty much inimical to all forms of life, period.
