Apple Macintoshes were characterized as an integrated experience/closed platform pitted against the open standards of the IBM PC. He sees the same battle here.
Dismissing the plaintiffs because you suspect their motives:
The people who brought this suit certainly know this. They lawyers that represetn them certainly know this. They also know all about the CDA. The thing is - they just don't care. They're overzealous and would really like a slice of the CL pie, especially after the big investment from Google. They were hoping for a tech-ignorant judge or jury. Its a matter of chance they didn't get one which would have ordered 10 million dollars to all these people, violate basic free speech protectiosn, etc all for the sake of protectign people from anonymous online "racicts" who may or may not be real. Why aren't they suing the racists directly? Because theres little to no money there.
is bullshit.
1 - Google never invested in craigslist. Ebay bought some shares from a former employee, but that money went to the former employee - it was not capital that went to craigslist.
2 - Maybe someone wanted craigslist to pay, sure. That doesn't change the fact that there were ads with illegal preferences on craigslist.
Damn! I was just about to post a joke about KDE not being a "relatively fast and lightweight environment", but you've already shot your load. Patience, young flamer. You shouldn't bitch about the quality of comments until there are at least 50 responses.
Using pointy clicky whizzy admin tools to manage 120 boxes is stoopid, friend. You're wasting your time. Let me help you out.
A smarter way to do things:
Designate a master server. Make a share. Put an empty script in it and call it doSomething.sh.
On the other 119 hosts, make a cronjob to either mount this share or copy the contents to a local dir. Make a second cronjob to run a bit later and have it execute doSomething.sh.
When you want to globally update some software or config files, write a script to do so and place the script and software/config files in the share on the master.
Update doSomething.sh as appropriate. You're done.
Go home on time.
You edit one script on one box and your changes are pulled out to all the clients. Easy, no?
Your quality of life is proportional to your scripting skills. Check for errors and trap them, have it page you if something's totally borked, mail the results to you or update a db somewhere. This is the traditional UNIX way. I admire all the programmers that made gui toys to edit httpd.conf or ifconfig up/down eth1, but you shouldn't be using them when you're administering 120 boxes. That's just stupid.
It sounds like you wanted to GPL the code for ideological purposes. If that's the case, there are plenty of GPL zealots around here who will show up sooner or later.
I think it would be more productive if you would share a practical reason for GPL'ing the code, if you had one.
Siren Tech.. yes, that's them. Sorry about violating that NDA in my post, guys. Woops;)
At the time, I thought intelligent signage was a wicked clever idea. The implementation was clunky, but that was 1999. I'm not sure what would have been a reasonable alternative then.
I wonder if they've gone to Linux and rendered video now. Seems the way to go, no? Sony seems to think so, and apparently they're making money at that game.
Years ago I spoke to a company in Chicago who were just breaking into, even creating this market. They were using plasma displays and whatnot in retail environments. The kicker was they were running Macintoshes and all of the artwork was in Director. They ran ISDN lines to each and every location, and when there was an update, they'd have to dial each machine and upload the new artwork.
Most of the malware I've seen lately has a watchdog process guarding the registry in addition to the spyware. You'll see something like wkjtis.exe in the process list in addition to bargains.exe.
I find the name of that process with HijackThis, which also gives the filename. It'll be in %system32%, and the spyware will be in Program Files.
The directory in Program Files will have a few.dat files which contain the.exe and the.dll in %system32%. Obviously when you delete the reg key loading the dll, or delete the spyware.exe, the process spawned from the.dll will rewrite either.
My strategy is to keep a copy of vi.exe around. I can vi the.dat, dG the file (deleting all the contents), write it, and bingo! done. It appears console apps don't go throught the same permissions layer that Windows Explorer does.
So I:
- kill the spyware process
- vi and delete the contents of the.dat
- kill the process launched from the dll
- let HijackThis delete the registry entry calling the dll
- vi and delete the contents of the.dll
- vi and delete the contents of the spyware.exe
- reboot if necessary.
It's important to note that thesse things hook into Explorer, so opening a new Explorer or IE window starts them again. Don't do that during this process.
I have to say I'm impressed with the watchdog processes. I've always been reminded of this ccool hack when fighting them.
I can't believe a professional sysadmin would think that the country in which a crime took place would appear in logs, let alone be useful in solving this kind of crime. It's just naivete of the sort that would.....lead one to believe that criminals would steal less if the US dollar went further in the criminals' country.
yeah! and another good thing about outsourcing is that the dollar goes so much further in countries like India, so the criminals need to steal less! Why, I bet if Citibank hadn't outsourced that call center and the theft had occured in New York or somewhere, it woulda been a couple million!
Looking at mobygames I see Resident Evil, RE 2, RE 3, RE Outbreak, RE Code Veronica, RE Survivor... what's going on here?
Can someone just tell me if which ones have Milla Jovovich in it? That's all I really want to know.

That's, uh... cool. what's her uid?
Because we're all pussies... which is pretty much why we're doing this work to begin with.

Naming an automated package management/software update system after Slackware? That's cute.
so hopefully those of us using Irix will see maintenance releases until then.

sysadmin tools, indeed.
That's the Technical Fascist's .cshrc.

they're no rocket scientists. How in the heck can a search engine help NASA? What could Google possibly offer?

I love that these have a mechanical lever and they make mechanical farts when booting. Retro cool and functional.

xalarm does everything you're asking for. It's in the contrib/utilities dir at ftp.x.org.

What would it take to replace x86 with another chip like Crusoe or MiPS and make it better for desktop PCs?
