  1. Re:Google second , according to google on Honeymoon Over For Google? · · Score: 1

And because, until recently, Yahoo used Google exclusivly as the search engine for its results, people could use Yahoo to get the same results as Google... Just with lots of ads.

  3. Should be interesting on Delta 4 Inaugural Launch A Success · · Score: -1

From what i have read about this launch, it looks like it will be interesting. There are 2 or 3 Russians going up with them. Anyone know if thats a first or what?

This mission is just to install some girders on the space station, and leave 3 of them in the International Space Station as well.

  4. burnable media on 87GB On DVD-Sized Media · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems as though every so often someone comes out with a new form of media storage which reflects our current style, as well as about the standard size of storge. I remember when DVD's were announced, i had two 9 GB harddrive in my PC. Now i have two 80 GB drives.
And by the time this comes out, or something like it, it will cost considerably too much for a while, and then it will be fairly priced and it will be a norm that we find boring. The RIAA will have a fit about it.
I think that new generations of storage media that use entierly new technologies, that really push the envelope, will be the real exciting times.

  5. Wires on NSA Approves First 802.11b Product for Secret Data · · Score: 1

I wonder sometimes, after reading article about this sort of wireless security, and issues involved in it, why secure data can't just stay in phyical wires. With the post a few days back about Infrared networks being more secure, where i would think that physcial networks could work just as well makes more sense.
But progress towards a truly secure wireless network will no doubtedly continue and business drives the demand for it, with companies willing to pay top dollar for security these days.
Perhaps then home network security at this level won't be far behind

  7. PARC isn't research for Xerox on Xerox Trying To Sell PARC · · Score: 2

Having worked at Xerox PARC for 2 years in the past, i know that Xerox PARC is not just the research site for Xerox Corporation. They are independent in that they just have get money from Xerox, but most of what they research is far from copiers.
Many of their projects are in human interactions with computers, thinking about how to use current or future technologies in new ways, and advanced electronics. They have always been on the forefront of computer technology design, regardless of who owns them, i don't think PARC is going to leave that role.

  8. real point on Set Digital Music Free · · Score: 1

perhaps this is straying from the topic a little, but i think it address the underlying problem here. Seems to me everyone is caught up in the idea of having the government and corportations take away their rights online, but whats really going on here? Does everyone really think that the rampant trading of mp3s is legal? Its one thing to compare it to making a copy of a CD or tape. But the truth is everyone is really just getting albums and their favorite songs for free, and wants to keep them, no pay. Whats really going on isn't right, the current system may suck, but that does mean two wrongs make a right.

  9. typical on Bladeenc Under Patent Attack · · Score: 2

Once again, people who have some tie into something as big as MP3 want to cash out on it. So many business oriented people realize that if you keep a tie into something that is this big, you can just skim a little off the top and make big bucks.
What doesn't make sense to me is the overall lack of forward progress this causes. Patenting a product makes sense in many cases, however in the software industry, it puts a damper on everyone else. The reason things get big in this industry in the first place is because they are easily obtainable and open. At this point, mp3s are so popular, trying to stop someone from writing a free encoder that doesn't make money seems petty.

I hardly see how shutting down servers would help anything. First, we are all where we are because of companies that hire us, that make money, and provide the servers, cash, whatever to make it all run. Feeling that you are in control of it may be true, but abusing the power is shooting yourself in the foot.

  12. weblogic on Cross-Platform Development Tools? · · Score: 1

We created a large app at our company, all developed in windows, however we used weblogic's Zero Administration Client. There is a cross platform package that works pretty well that can package up a JRE with your app. It also allows for dynamic updates. Weblogic also handled all our database connections. It is still kinda new, and has some bugs to be worked out, but for the most part, its fine.

  14. Linux isn't Redhat on Red Hat Finishes Last · · Score: 1

Am I the only one out here who doesn't use Redhat? I read everyday someone talking about Linux, and referring to it as Redhat Linux, and nothing but. For example, the poll on the article here asks what your preferred OS is, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Netware, Redhat Linux, etc. I don't really have anything against Redhat, I just don't use it. Does that mean I prefer to use some "other" operating system?
