I am sure that eventually we will be able to multi-boot the intel Macs. Hell, I tri-boot my Dell notebook with WinXP, OS X x86 10.4.1, and Fedora Core 4 (you just chainload GRUB into Darwin's bootloader). The problem I have is with the file systems seeing one another. HFS+ can see NTFS, but not EXT3. NTFS can't see HFS+, and so on. Maybe I am just lazy, but it can be annoying with the different file systems not seeing eachother, especially with NTFS's mutant (read:non-*nix) file permissions.
last time i looked it was 4/1/03. better known as APRIL FOOL'S DAY. call me crazy, but i think taco is posting this so many times because of all the complaints about the dupes in the last year. i think its kinda funny myself. and a side note for those of you complaining about missing out on the real news...dont any of you slashdotters ever read other news filters?. metafilter, fark, memepool and the reg (to name a few) usually scoop slashdot anyway. ive also noticed that many slashdotters get their news from more than one place. oh...and at the end of the day you will be back to slashdot tomorow anyway....so chill out folks.
being the pervert that i am...i put in fuck, cunt, and tits. now, i must give google credit on this one, because it returned the 4 other dirty words you cant say on tv. looks like google bot is a geroge carlin fan too.
now, i realize im posting a bit late and probably no one will read this, but, how will this effect XM radio. i realize it is subscription based, but doesnt XM promise cd quality misic? to me, that means perfect (if not prefect, better than an internet radio station broadcasting on a 28.8 k stream...or even at a 56 kstream for that matter). does the subscription cost cover the CRAP...er...CARP ruling? or maybe im all wrong in assuming that this new-fangeled satalite radio thing falls under the DMCA and CARP. does CARP effect the broadcaster, the satalite, or the reciever? does it effect all three? if so, if they can bring a satalite in to this mess, how far out there can this go? will this mean that if the SETI people ever get an answer, are they allowed to translate (decode) it without federal penalties? or am i just out of my goard?
sure...weve all made fun of most of those things (and even eaten them after weve spent all our money on whatever bullshit...and were forced to eat our beloved gag-gifts) but one of the oddest canned foods i have seen came from our own government. i have a can of USDA pork. there is no paper label, its just the silver can with black lettering and the outline of a pig. i think it contains pork (naturally), water, salt, and probably some kind of sodium-whats-it-called. and i thought government cheese was ammusing...
i was sitting around bullshitting with some buddies of mine explaining how i got the idea of sending junkmail from one person back to another (credit card offers etc) in their postage paid envelopes. i was also telling them how i would occasionally do the same thing with spam addresses. i would collect a small list of addresses and put them in anywhere anyone was asking for my email address. i decided after a while that i would like to somehow force these people to either stop emailing me or pay me for each email. so, i talked to a couple lew-type buddies of mine and formed out a carefully worded contract of sorts that basicaly said the sender of the spam, by sending another email, agreed to pay me $100 (or however much). the best part is that that it is a 100% legaly binding contract (as far as the law people i know have told me). i have yet to get any money, but you better believe the spam stops in its tracks. i just wish there was a way to track the senders better because of the fact that i seem to get the same 'free teen nude xxx midget peeing animal j-lo bedroom cam' spam from different IPs and email addresses. oh well...
as a muscian, the only thing i worry about is not getting credit for my music. if people want to share it, go right ahead. if i happen to make some money as an after effect....right on. im just happy that there is someone with some clout speaking out about the fact that it really is control over technology. this sort of thing has to be nipped in the ass now before more legal precedents (ie dmca) are established.
most people will want an os that is easy to use as possible. the less thinking they do, the better. people that read/. generally seem to have the ability to think for themselvs....unlike the moron who bought his computer at wal-mart. as long as the lowest common denomanator keeps getting lower, people will continue to like their UI the way it is. and as long as people are spending money, if its not broke, dont fix it.
was it me, or was that website about using hydrogen as a fuel.
now im no chemist, but couldnt one store a bunch of water and apply an electric charge to it to split the H and the O. there you have your oxydizer and your fuel. once ignited, wouldnt it turn back into H2O?
im a little tired of all this rhetoric about the definition of a human life. life is life...human or otherwise. enough of this human arrogance that somehow we as a species (the one that is screwing things up on this planet at a pretty good pace) have some kind of seniority over other forms of life.
im not a whiney liberal, nor am i a puritan. im a scientist that knows you cant make an omlet with breaking a few eggs.
we do look at every option...thats why all these stem calls are needed. in the lab i work in, we either harvest our cells (cd34+ cells to be exact) from mouse bone marrow (yes...we murder the poor inocent cute and fuzzy mice...deal with it) or we isolate them from human umbilical cord blood. what all this boils down to is that people want to live forever and people like me are getting payed to try and figure out how to do it. medical science has never saved one life, and it may never.
so you have your choice: fund this kind of stuff and then complain about ethics when we find a way to make you live longer (and this whole 200 year old people thing will be another can of worms to open later), or deal with mortality like people have been doing for as long as humans have been on the planet.
if you dont have the $ for a Tibook, the g3 laptops are getting cheaper. especially the first generation ones. most of the problems with the first gen g3s are gone these days. not to mention, who wouldnt want a cheap laptop that can run osx?
this was going to show itself sooner or later. im no math guy, nor am i a computer guy. i am in fact a molecular biologist and i play with complex systems every day. i was thinking about how everything is connected to the net these days. cell phones, pda's, cars, even appliences. with all this stuff, the physical topology of the net is very dynamic, almost to the point its evolving on its own. despite the fact it is an entirely man-made thing, it looks very organic. all these complex systems look the same. as chaotic and complex as it is, it seems as tho someone (with too much time on their hands) saw how it is behaving like things found in nature. looks like i was thinking along the right lines.i just wonder with the speed of expansion what it will be like 5 years from now. i hope it doesnt develope morals...
now this is all hypothetical (much like the article), but if everyone HAD to be tracked somehow, wouldnt that be a huge invasion of privacy? i realize this is a conspiricy theory thing, but im going to accept all this for arguement's sake. so i log on and start surfin' the net. im the average end user, so i do everything from download porno without my wife knowing about it to looking into a new canyonaro to haul the kids around in. i also have a cable modem so i have a static ip. when i or any of my family "log on" we have our unique fingerprint for our ip. tcp/ms is tracking our every move. all this wonderful marketing resrarch cant go to waste. microsoft will no doubt have a way of storing this info (or atleast have an app that can...that they can sell) and selling it to the highest bidder (aol/tw maybe?). not to mention the govt will be wanting this info for their own dirty reasons. there are implications beyond the infrastructure of the internet to worry about. but being nothing more than a lowly luser, what do i know?

have you ever looked at the meta tag on a porn site? people do that all the time. next thing you know, your caught up in pop-up hell anyway.

not only that, but imagine the havoc when your child decided to watch telletubbies while your trying to do something on your computer..
and we thought it was bad when all we had to deal with was bad drivers and cell phones...

i refuse to believe that with osx being open sourced, that no one has started porting it. even if it was just for their own personal ammusment.
