Sounds rough. Road Runner didn't mind very much. I called them when I was installing Linux the first time, and asked about my NIC settings, which they told me. But they didn't have any software for it, and the guy told me they didn't support Linux at all. He did tell me about a newsgroup for roadrunner Linux users, roadrunner.help.linux, and that's where I got my login program.

    6. Customers are strictly prohibited from running server-based applications on Residential Road Runner accounts. This would include, without limitation to the running of HTTP Web servers, FTP servers, Gaming servers, SMTP and POP Mail servers, Domain Name Servers, Chat servers, etc.

If you use RR in Tampa, you can't. I have a friend though, that I think runs a FTP server off his machine, or did for a little while for MP3's.

That's my ISP too, in the Tampa area. I've had little problem from them, except for one call to tech support. But they've been fairly prompt, I've had 2 modems go out in the 3 months I've had it due to lightning, and I've gotten a new one in about 48 hours usually. And I have no problem with the speed. I saw the fastest d/l I had ever had yesterday, d/l StarOffice at 345 KB/sec. 70 Meg file in 3 minutes. God I love my cable modem. : )

In my opinion, that article is more truth than fiction.

  8. Install from Windows? on WinLinux 2000 · · Score: 1

Can you install this thing directly from Windows? I ask this, because of a incedent that happened recently. We were loading up Red Hat onto some of the computers at school. This kid was interested, so he takes it home one night to install on his machine. He comes back the next day and says it doesn't work. He thought that when he put the CD in the CD-Rom drive, it would read it automatically, like most windows CD's will do, and then go to a nice little install process, like a normal Windows program, and then there would be a little Red Hat icon under his programs menu when he wanted to run Red Hat. Remember, these are the kinds of people that Linux will have to cater to if you want it to overtake Microsoft. So to help poor people like him, will this thing have a .exe file to start it off with, or even a little program icon in Windows that would restart his machine to boot into Linux?

That's what I'm doing right now. I've reinstalled Linux about 4 times since I got it about a month ago. I probally didn't really NEED to do it, but I had no idea how to fix what I broke, so it was easier to just reinstall. I've come from a complete Windows GUI user (never really did DOS), to a semi-competent Unix user, which is better than I was. And I still have problems with it, but I chalk it up as learning, and I don't fret it, the worst I can do is have reinstall, and that only takes 30 minutes.

  10. Re: game consoles are the future on Is Sun Truly A Friend of Linux? · · Score: 1

Just to point out some inaccuracies, First off, console games for the PSX cost at most $50 at launch. Nintendo games cost at most $60. A new console (DC) also costs $200, not $300. And you say most of America has a computer, that is "sorta" true, but how good is that computer? Capable of playing the latest games and decent frame rates? Also, you can play your old console games, keep your old console. Simple as that. And just as a little help, the GameBoy color is doing some of what you wanted with playing old games. They already have SMB out on it, and they are planning on porting a couple of other NES games, like Zelda. And yes, the clincher to your arguement is that people already have computers. But some people don't want to put up with the hassle of installing, upgrading, configuring, and all that crap, so they get a console to do it for them. I personally see the computer market going down, not completely gone because as you said, RTS games are not really good for a console, but computers are just too expensive and fustrating for the Average Joe to mess with.

I don't think the GB is a crummy product, I love it. If some other company could have come up with one that had better games, not neccasarly better technology (as the Sega handheld proved) then they could have a market share of the handheld market. But now it's harder because of Nintendo's goldmine, Pokemon. The GB is FAR FAR FAR from dead because of Pokemon. And you can bet that the GBA will have a Pokemon game for it. They promote the GB because it makes them money, simple as that. The GBC is really good, and the GBA sounds to be better yet.
