Linux is not even near being ready for mass market consumption. A lot of/. seem to think, o, Linux isn't that hard, or it's just as hard as Windows. Sure, installing was pretty easy, getting used to the different way file systems are named (C becomes/dev/hda1) might throw some people off, but it wasn't bad at all to install. But actually using it? No, Windows is much much easier. It's totally GUI, so they don't even have to type at a console, ever. One of my first daunting tasks was making a boot disk. Due to the way I installed it, I have to boot from a disk. In Windows it's easy, just search the help file for "boot disk" and boom, it gives you a link and instructions. So, I go to the KDE help, type in boot disk, and it gives me about 13 different pages, none of which seemed to be what I wanted. So I go into #linuxhelp, and someone says tyep mkbootdisk. So I figure out how to get to the console, and type it in. Then it asks for otehr stuff, like the device, and the folder. More hassle. And configuring stuff, like the mouse or resolution, much more of a hassle in Linux. The fact you have to log in and remember a password is going to confuse the dickens out of some people. Permissions are still giving me hell, half the stuff I can't do because I have to be logged in as superuser. Linux is not a desktop OS, I don't use it as a server, so I guess that's it's a great server, but as a replacement for Windows 98 or 2000? Ha, that won't happen. Maybe Windows 200x, but not in the near future. Windows is MUCH easier to use for the average computer user.
Oh geez, now you've done it./. are smelling blood, and before you know it, they'll be after you like a pack of dogs. Prepare to be flamed to a crisp for gasp! saying something positive about Microsoft. How long have you been here? 2 minutes? Don't you know that Linux is always the best, no matter what? You are supposed to say, that Linux products are the best. Take no mind they might not be for some purposes, Linux is always the best, no matter what.
This same logic could also be used for the DC. The PS2 is coming after the DC, so it does that mean the DC will automatically win? No. Same thing then.
....But that is to be expected since the Dolphin is still on the drawingboard, Nintendo will make damn sure that it'll outperform the PS2.
I'm amazed that most of Slashdot forgets about the Dolphin. I guess it shows how arrogent they are, since Nintendo hasn't got it's own story, yet (I intend to submit the Dolphin specs when they are released) so most Slashdotters automatically assume the PS2 is the end all of videogames. The Dolphin specs haven't been announced yet, but according to Nintendo, they will beat whatever our Sony can do, which is expected.
I remember when PSXIGN released those screen shots of some PS2 ocean game. They looked like crap, especially when compared to Sega's Eccho the Dolphin for the DC. It will also apparently be very hard to program for, which is never good. I don't think Sony will do that well in this coming next-gen race.
Why would a machine designed to play games need a text editor? It doesn't. COnsoles are for games, and only for games. And some people buy a computer only for playing Quake, and they upgrade that computer every 6 months to play Quake at higher resolution and higher FPS. It's not worth it. If you already have a good computer, or you just like computers and buy a good one, then sure, play games on it. But if you are just wanting something to have fun with, buy a console. It does one thing, and does it well. Every program works for it, no installation, no headaches. And FYI, a console is about $200 (except for the PS2), and there are 3 major ones. That's $600 every 4 years, quite a big change from $2000 and up for a computer. As for playing old games, it's called keeping your old systems. Then you can still play Duck Hunt on your NES.
Of course, when the Dolphin specs are finally reviled, it probally won't be the "superior machine" anymore. In fact, if it wasn't, I'd be very sad as the Nintendo Dolphin will come out at least a year after the PS2 (PS2 January, Dolphin December, if you go by the PR guys)
First of all, no one knows what Sony or Nintendo will do. So since no one knows, how can you come to those judgements? Also, it's rumored that the DC will eventually come with a NIC so us cable modem users can use our cable modems, I don't think they could even require us to pay them for an ISP then. So the point is, NO ONE KNOWS!!!!!!
Most of the stuff you are complaining about, are changing for this coming generation. They will have internet gaming. The now defunt (in the US anyway) 64DD was going to allow you to update cars, sports teams, or new tracks to your games. Maybe Nintendo will release a harddrive like device for the Dolphin that will write stuff like that, or download it off the internet. That would be neat. And the big reason I like console gaming, is it's cheap, and multiplayer with my friends. I can have a great time being together, playing Mario Golf or Smash Brothers, and don't have to be sitting alone staring at the computer by myself.
The Nintendo Dolphin, according to Nintendo, will out perform the PSY. Nothing is really known about the Dolphin, that info is expected to be released at Space World 99, in about 15 days. But, the rumored price point is as low as $99, with a more reasonable one being $150. Plus, one of the editors at IGN64 has stated that the Dolphin has something that will "slaughter the competiton". No one but him knows what it is yet, but I like that statement : ).
Yes, I've had IE hang on me, but I've had Netscape do the same thing. And there are a lot of things that I like about IE, such as saving your password (I don't care about that security risk, it's an at home machine), bookmarks are handled a lot better (naming them when you make them, easier to get to), IE uses more tags (Netscape is really bad about CSS), and finally, I just like the way text looks in IE over Netscape. And I've seen many many pro-Linux people make blatently false or misleadign statements, so it's not just MS guys.
That's national news for you, I wonder sometimes if they even know anything about what they are reporting on. I could list countless examples of misleadings by the media, so this example doesn't suprise me the least.
Well, I'm not an admin, just a lowly PC user, but I post pro-MS messages because, duh, I like MS. I like Windows a whole lot more than Linux and IE much much much much more than Netscape (especially Linux's Netscape). But that's not the point, the point is that just because someone actually disagree's with you, doesn't mean they work for MS. How do I know you aren't Linus, or you work for Red Hat?
So are you saying there is no way to get an even close to accurate count? This logic could apply to anything that was in the article. Maybe there was a site that said to not do BAD or it's GOOD to kill.
Microsoft will still prevail, and continue to lead in the home market, unless you give home consumers a reason to switch. I mean, what exactly can a linux box give them that a Windows box can't, other than reliablity? Is there some magical killer app that every teenager on the block must download that only comes in Linux? Does the mom write email 5 times faster in Linux than on Windows? Also remember these people are just basically technological ignorants, so it's not like they are going to care how configurable it is or anything technical like that. So, why switch for the average Joe?
Mystery Science Theater 3000 is basically a guy and two "robots" who are forced to watch really, really bad movies. To make them bearable to watch, they make fun of the movie.

er.. I mean, 669,600,000 MPH, forget the million part.
Very slow. Light travels at 186,000 miles a second, so that in hours would be...........669,600,000 million MPH.

Hahahahahha : ) Someone moderate that up!

Yea, so now I did a search of Windows AND computers, which came up with 12,515,783 Web pages.
Look at the dept. listing right under the topic. It says: from the but-only-if-you're-in-san-jose dept.
And to think, I was just there last week on vacation, why oh why couldn't school start next week, so I could have gone to this. Crap : )
But when you search for "windows computer" you get 26,591,477 results.
And why is there pinkish triangle things in 3 corners of the picture?
