Oh dont' get me started on my typing class last year. I tried to test out of it, but the test was so full of crap about formating that no one but the keyboard teacher cares about, that I failed. So I had to take the class. It was incredibly easy because I already know how to type, but it just wasted a semester that I could have used for something more interested. Not to mention I hated the teacher. And PE is a wasted class too. The only reason I like it is because it's a free 100 to help my GPA. But it's worthless otherwise. I'm so glad I never have to take it again.
Of course, cutting back on the funding will cut school budgets, and let me tell you, we need all the money we can get. But you do have a good point, so I say go for it.
> People usually realize that there is no money in having no skills and will take some training and get a job.
If they relized that, why would they drop out of school in the first place?
>Before government got involved education was much better
And when exactly was that? Not anytime too recent. Just last week in US History we learned about how New England required schools for towns with populations over 500 (or some number) back in the 1600's. So the government has controlled the education system for a long time. And a result of that schooling was that New England had one of the highest literacy rates in the world, much more than England or the South since school wasn't mandetory there.
You'd trust a 6th grader with a decision that will affect the rest of his life? I know I wouldn't. Hell, when I was in 6th grade (and that was only 5 years ago) I don't think I'd drop out, but there would probally be only 500 kids in my highschool. While that would be a good thing for me (smaller classes WooHoo!) what about everyone else who dropped out? These are 6th graders, they dont' want to work, they can barely do anything. The idiots are weeded out through the honors system. I've only had to take about 3 classes with regular people through 3 years of school. I don't mind, they don't bother me any because those 3 classes were easy anyway. Kicking people out when they're 11 is just asking for trouble, and we'd definitly see a huge jump in the unemployment statistics since they couldn't get jobs. Even just a regular HS education is better than nothing for these kids, we owe it to them.
>. Dammit if I got the damned right answer maybe I'm good enough I don't need to show my work
You do relize why they do that don't you? It's because if they didn't, copying just the answers of the nerd in the class is much easier than copying all the work and the answers. I know that sometimes it's fustrating when you can do it in your head, I've felt those same fustrations. But I don't blame them for making me show my work, because in the long run it's better.
The X-Files was one of the few reasons I even watch TV anymore, and with Duchovny gone, it just won't be the same. I loved the conspiracy theroies(sp) and just the general thought of alien existance. Not to mention that Scully is really hot ; ). I'll be sad to see it go, but I'm glad that by the final show, the whole conspiracy will finally be reveled and understood.
Speaking of Hotmail being on other OS's, I found it amusing that once someone stated that Hotmail wasn't on an NT server, people suddendly didn't care what OS it was on, and all attention turned to the fact that it was a bug in the script. I am willing to bet $5 (and no, if you answer this saying you would have kept your viewpoint, you don't get the $5, it's just rhetorical) that had Hotmail been on an NT server, there would have been MUCH more posts about how insecure NT is and how Linux is so much more secure and how everyone should use Linux. The fact that it was a bug in the script would have been mentioned, but it would have been a minor thing compared to the number of posts blasting NT. This is the way/. thinks, and if you haven't guessed by now, it pisses me off.
Actually, the PS2 was always "history" as Nintendo's Dolphin will most likely it in any hardware spec. Howard Lincoln has said that the Dolphin will at be at least on par if not better than the PS2, and Matt Cassimassia(sp) of IGN64 has seen (or at least heard about) the Dolphin specs from a reliable source, and he guarenttee's the Dolphin will be more powerful than the PS2. As of yet, Nintendo has made no official announcement on the specs so that way Sony will have to be commited to it's hardware design (so it can't suddenly change it when they relize they will be overpowered), and so people continue to buy the N64 for a little while longer. So the whole point of this was taht the PS2 is not the end all of videogame systems just because it was featured on Slashdot. So in the way the original poster asked this, yes, the PS2 is and always has been history. As for if the Dolphin beats the new nVidia card, no one knows, as no specs are out to the public yet.
I still don't think anyone's explicitly answered his question. Why should he bother to make anything, if it is only going to get copied, and no one will want to pay for it? Why should a company spend millions of dollars in R&D when they are going to end up giving it away? Sure, getting stuff free is nice, but how exactly do you make a living off of it if no one pays you anything?
English As She Is Spoken FLASH! I've been Slashdotted[tm]! I was hacking away at some work-related stuff, when I got this note from an administrator at my ISP:
Subject: Your CGI featured on Slashdot From: marcotte@panix.com To: jdf@panix.com Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 01:20:39 -0400 (EDT)
Your CGI which was featured on slashdot was causing all sorts of problems on our servers. Since it needs to make many queries to another server, it takes a long time to run. That coupled with the fact that slashdot is a very high volume site caused your perl processes to back up and cause both of our web servers to stall. It is quite likely that babelfish was overloaded also.
I needed to rename it so what it wouldn't cause the servers to go down again. You may want to put up some examples of what the script can do instead. At least until the traffic levels off.
In general we need you to let us know when you expect a large increase in traffic (I'm assuming you submitted the link to slashdot).
Thank you.

So, I'm honored to have been featured on Slashdot. Now, is there anyone out there who's willing and able to host my little toy?
In the meantime, if you like, please submit your email address via this form, and I'll send you a note when the script is up and running again somewhere.
While many of you probally think having tux on a credit card is cool (heck, even I do), it probally won't get too many questions about Linux. Most people will see the penguin, assume it's some enviromental cause, and then totally miss the point. Maybe a computer somewhere on it would help, I just think that with the current design, a lot of the population wouldn't get it.
OMG, I never thought to check, and your right! I can't believe they don't have a website. You'd think a huge electronics store that they are would have SOMETHING but they have nothing, just pathetic, totally pathetic. That's news to me.
Yea, I got a cable modem, so of course every time I'm on the computer, I'm on the internet.:) Actually, I really am on the computer almost exclusivly to get on the net, or do net related things, so I did put 100%
I've heard of MTV2, but I can't get it through our cable provider. That's the problem with MTV and VH1, they don't play any video's anymore. CMT and GAC do a lot better job of playing them, MTV should take a leason from them.
Same here. I spend 75% of my time at only two sites, here and a Nintendo Message Board. Only late at night do I try and find new sites since I'm bored then. And I knew a guy who would start off everday at yahoo, go to the same link, to get to the same site every time. I guess he didn't relize he could bookmark stuff. But it wouldn't suprise me if more people didn't do the same thing, and that's why Yahoo gets so many hits.
Exactly. Having my addiction doesn't hurt me at all. I don't have any friends (just moved here, and I'm not exactly a sociable kind of person) and homework is done fast, so I basically have 5 hours of free time every day, so I spend it on the net. It's better than TV at least.
I agree that it's better than watching TV. I am addicted, I miss my internet connection a lot when I'm on vacation. I probally spend 5 hours every weekday and 10 hours on the weekend, with more time during summer vacation, but at least it's better than TV. I've learned HTML, and praticipated in semi-intelligent disscussions in Slashdot. It's improved my writing skills (though they still stink) since I've had to type so much in forums like this. And I've learned just a bunch of general stuff, mainly about computers, but rollercoasters, planets, and can keep up with the news. I hardly ever watch TV anymore (only movies, and The X-Files) and I don't miss it one bit.
The Conspiracy Theroy. Gee, that's original. Maybe AMD has been undercutting Intel all these years so it could drive Intel out of business. Yea, that could be it. So are you also saying that Intel should have kept it's higher prices, and lose customers? That's bad business, and since Intel is a business, and wishes to stay in business, of course it's going to cut prices. Airlines do it all the time, one goes down in fares, all the other ones follow suit. But you don't hear acusations that Southwest is driving the other airlines out of business. And I too hope AMD isn't driven out of the market, because like the original poster said, competition is good.

Darn, and I wanted to try it out too.
Yea, it's in November in Las Vegas. My dad is going, I only wish I were old enough and didn't have school, otherwise I'd be there in a second.

Hhahahahaah
Well, I'm not an expert by any means, I'm not really a crackpot since I don't post stuff I know nothing about, so I guess that makes me a lounger.
Hahahahahhaa, very fitting : )
Dum dum dum....... Why does this not suprise me?
