I resemble that comment, and let me counter yours with real life things that happen at my company.
It starts off with a requirement. Now, whether this requirement is real or not, is depending on who's asking for it, and if it contributes to sustained profitability in its execution.
Then you start to dig into it and ask users what they want. See what happened? It went from a need to a want when you start asking users more details.
Who's fault is that? No-one's. It's human nature to take requirements further to get more work done. Are users idiots? Yes. Are developers oblivious to a users need? Yes, but that's the BA's fault for not translating the two.
So before everyone gets it into their heads this is a flame war between user and developer, here's when you can properly apply your logic.
User gets a new piece of software, it doesn't do what they want, developer is an idiot. User gets input into a new piece of software and asks for things that less than 1 % of users want but take 80% of developers time, user is an idiot.
BA's are always idiots for getting it always wrong.
Now with that said, I should give props to the ACTUALLY good BA's out there. The ones that anticipate need, the ones that can head off compromise before the scope creep, the ones that keep users in the loop and continually garner true feedback on needs (because like everything, needs change) and can put their foot down on what's possible and what's needed vs what's wanted and what's a waste.
We're all idiots in another persons eyes, it's just a matter of who you talk to, and when.
I invested in a NAS Drive which has Raid 0 AND I back it up once a month offsite through the web through an FTP script.
It was cheap (under $500 including upgrading my whole infrastructure to gigibit) and it's the "set it and forget it" variety.
Best part, it's scalable to whatever drives come out....wait that's a lie, that was my original plan but I just learned yesterday it's limited to 2GB drives (SCREW YOU SPARC!). Go with the more expensive expandable 4 bay x86 ones and it might push up the costs but worth it in my opinion.
As a happy bonus, I now get my FAMILY to backup their videos and photos to it as well over the internet in the same "set it and forget it" way.
Lastly, Once a year, I give a set of DVD's (Dual Layer) to my lawyer to add to the Will. Overkill yes, but hey you never know.
I know politics can get evil at time but seriously, WTF?
That's as close to treason as I can see to the tech industry.
Media Levies? Fine, thank you for protecting us from RIAA type tatics.
But then to turn around and sell out the entire COUNTRY to further your agenda? That's plain evil and I wish someone had the gonads to actually put people in jail over this.
True. In Canada, only one side needs to know about and authorize the taping of a conversation.
BUT a third-party taping is obviously a HUGE nono.
A few years ago a friend of mine went through a bitter divorce and recorded everything his (now ex) wife was saying on the phone since she kept changing her tune when in front of arbitrators.
When the tapes came out, she spouted up and down about how illegal it was and it would never be used in courts etc. After a 10 minute recess with her lawyers the contested issues were resolved in short order.
It's made me VERY careful about what I say to who on ANY phone.
Can't tell you how many times my blackberry went flying from the holder when I got out of the car, took off my coat etc. Still survived, never a crack.
Still, first chance I got to switch to Iphone I took it, Know why? 10 min to download/test a french translation program. Iphone? under a minute.
Since moving, I'm reminded of the functionality I had back when I had a Jornada. Now gimme a sylus iphone and I'll start drinking the MAC kool-aid.:)
Oh, IT told them how to securely store the data on the laptop. Him being at the executive level, promptly ignored IT directives because it was "too complicated".
I'm in a large organization, it's INCREDIBLE what hoops IT makes little ol me jump through to do things on my laptop but Executives routinely able to do and get the most insane stuff happening on their laptop. Autologin because they keep forgetting their passwords? No duh, changed every 20 days, must contain an non-alpha-numeric character, must contain upper and lowercase, not dictionary based, and not similar to the last 20 passwords.....you have ANY idea how fricken hard it is to keep track of not only the main login but all the subsystems we use?
Oh, what's that? the exec has autologin with roboform installed? And this is allowed HOW? Oh right, they're the execs.
Back in 1998 (I think) the company I work for was recommended/poised to buy this little company that was making 6 meg virtual environments called Vmware.
Coolest shit I had ever seen up to that point, blew away Qview. Had we bought it, I have no doubt we would have screwed it up and set the whole world back by 5 years.
Not to say anything negative about the company I work for, just that I doubt they would have had the dedicated vision and creativity to develop them into the company they are today.
I Chuckle every time I see how much my company now pays them.
You're free to use the PS3 anyway you want. All they've said is that they'll cut you off from their network, which, you know, they own, put money into, time, resources etc.
Hack away, just make sure it's offline.....how did Sony put it? Permanently.
I think this is pretty straight forward legal talk and is nothing different than what Xbox360 and Microsoft does.
There WILL be a fork and separate network setup so that you can join on someone elses resources, I'm sure of that.
I got a letter saying the CRTC would force the ISP's to downgrade my cap to 60gb or I can happily pay $100.00 more a month (50 for a higher plan, 50 for going over) to get back to my cap.
YOU are missing the point of why we're pissed off.
The CRTC just handed the only 3 companies with the infrastrure cart-blanche to strangle anyone, even if you're with a competitor who happens to be leasing their lines.

Yo Grark
Yes I did, sorry about that.
Sorry, I mistyped, it's not RAID 0, it's Raid 1 (X-Raid) thank you for attempting to make me look like I knew what I was talking about :)
You're completely right, it was that stupid Xraid which confused me. The 2 drives are sync'd, mirrored.
I invested in a NAS Drive which has Raid 0 AND I back it up once a month offsite through the web through an FTP script.

Funny, he didn't look like he was threatening a facebook post at all!

Funny how they never returned my emails....

God how I wish this was so.
Send the bloody Quebecor's to ACTUALLY fight for something rather than just complain to goverment all the time to get their way.
