I'd really like to know, what, if anything, went on in the mind of the person who moderated this as Troll.
But it's not really important, because I'm going to leave this place anyway. I spent so much time here the last years, I can't believe it. It's dumb most of the time and a terrible timesink. Only thing is, it's hard to break with a bad habit. But I quited smoking and TV when I recognized how stupid it was, so I'm sure I can do this, too. Wish me luck people, soon I'll be slashdot-free. Whooohoo!
About 15 years ago I remember him telling me that if you were going to use a cell phone in a car for a prolonged time, you might as well stick your head in a microwave.
Right, that may help. The waves emitted by the microwave and the cell phone will cancel out each other (negative interference) and so your brain is safe again. Don't forget to equip the other passengers with portable microwaves, too. My only concern is that the cell phone might not work correctly under these circumstances.
This discussion is missing the point that Temp and Swap should also be on a very fast drive.
My/tmp is in RAM, and if the computer has to swap heavily, it is slow as hell - no matter whether it swaps to a slow or a fast hard drive. The difference between RAM and hd is many, many mangnitudes; the difference between the fastest and the slowest hard drive is a factor of perhaps 2 or 3. So it really doesn't matter. (Well, it may matter if you're using an OS that swaps all the time without purpose, like Windows...)
Though rather than just asking, "Do you want to trust this applet", they should be a bit more explicit, "Trusting this applet will give it unrestricted access to your machine, and can install or change files, and access other computers through the network."
If people can't be bothered to read a message with 7 words, they will read the even longer message to a even lesser extent. This problem can't be fixed until we invent exploits that are 100% lethal for the exploitee. Something like applets with frickin' lasers behind the message box.
Well, then torture the Higgs Boson as long as you like - it does not know anything, and it will die gladly for the good cause! The GUT escaped before your eyes, and you'll never be able find it again. It's hidden in my ass, and right now I'm reaching the border of the universe, never to return. Let there be light!
They had put it on an aircraft carrier and navigated it away from shore immediately, when they heard about the LAND exploit. To their delight, it stayed pretty stable in the middle of the sea.
These people will cry the day they get a cease and desist from Microsoft because their child programmed a bubble sort in LOGO class, in first grade.
It's more likely that the children of those people will sue the inventor of bubble sort over a patent they're holding, which describes "a method of reordering a set of thingies according to a order relation without the use of turtles". They get rich fast and make daddy so proud.
Heh, "Troll", nice. I guess the gentoo user was offended, because I didn't do an "emerge crap" and used too few USE flags. Give mod points to a gentoo user and you increase the stupidity level of earth by 0.01%. In the meanwhile he does a stage 1 compile and gains a speed increase of 0.005%. After that he mods a second time, and I'm at -2, Troll. He races away on his ricer and earth loses again.
The only thing I'm trying to accomplish today is to make a single slashdot moderator recognize that his life is without any meaning, and that it is completely irrelevant if he mods me -1 insightful of +1 troll. Get over it. Grab a tit or write a device driver. Do something useful with our life. Don't waste it with drivel on slashdot. Anyone who has modpoints right now and is able to ignore this post can gain something precious. Even if you don't have modpoints, just imagine you had some, and then imagine you ignore this posting and live a happy live. It's so easy. (Oh boy, I'm only trying to help)
I think that's a pretty reasonable penalty, considering what those delinquents did. If you RTFA, you would know that they downloaded several string quartets - in one case even a whole symphonic ensemble - and forced them to perform in living rooms, basements and grubby bedrooms for days and days. The poor musicians got grave blisters on their fingers and will suffer for the rest of their lives from the severe psychological distress that is caused by sharing people over TCP/IP network links with with high packet loss.
Company Y is based in a country which has laws permitting sw patents. They see product Q and think that some concept in it is pretty cool and so they patent such a concept. Brain dead examiner rubber-stamps patent.
I don't doubt that they would get their patent rubber-stamped (that's not hard at all). But wouldn't the patent be invalid and easily defeated, because of prior art (i.e. product Q) - especially if someone tries to charge company X for product Q, which is older than the patent itself?
hit child molesters extremely hard without any consequence
Why do you think this is the case? - Does it have anyhting to do with the type of crime that molestation is?
I believe that most child molesters aren't able to protect themselves from criminals who are accustomed to brutal behaviour. Child molesters may be brutal, too, in many cases, but their victims are much weaker. So it *has* to do with the type of crime they committed. They are weak people who injured even weaker people. And the "good criminals" like to abuse this type of people, because it makes them feel morally superior. The same way as it makes you feel morally superior to condemn them.
My reference to their standing in jail was to show that even killers and other criminal even think this behavior is beyond reproach
You say that even people who are clearly outside of "the norms of our society" agree that child molesters are worse people than themselves. Now, that seems to prove something. Not.
the fact that child molesters are looked down upon by the most vicious hardened criminals in prison - in fact most child abusers are isolated - should indicate how out of main stream these crime are
vicious hardened criminals know that they can hit child molesters extremely hard without any consequence. that's why they like to do it. they like to abuse them sexually, too. (maybe you think that this is fair and part of main stream sexual behaviour, at least for main stream, hard working, vicious hardened crimials)
so you trust the moral judgement of vicious hardened criminals? i just want to point out that your statement is completely illogical.
Why can't they just uncheck the option? Those who care about kernel bloat are surely compiling custom kernels anyway
This isn't about bloat. If a kernel module crashes, the whole system crashes and you have to reboot (possibly losing data or log information). If a normal process crashes, you just restart the service. No other process will suffer.
Why would they want to see the patents go away if they where not interested in the code? That does not make sense.
I'm not sure if you're aware what a patent is (in contrast to copyrighted source code). There are some features that gimp is lacking, not because they're hard to implement, but because it's not possible to implement them legally. Adobe has enough money to buy patents in order to restrict other people to implement their own ideas...
I would guess the GIMP developers would love to see the PS source.
I think the GIMP developers would love to see many Adobe patents disapear. On the other hand, I think they wouldn't give a flying fart about any Photoshop source code.
Or maybe they would copy all the PS code and call it GIMP and add in some small improvements.
You think exactly like a CEO of a company we all hate.
Whenever you say ANYTHING good about PS here, and suggest that GIMP is not quite ready, boy oh boy, get ready for a flame war.
Information for you: I will mod down anyone who tries to get mod points with karma-whore phrases like that. But not because I disagree that PS is good software for professional users. Consider the following:
And, sooner or later, Adobe will port PS to Linux, and GIMP will die out, except for the extreamists.
So, every amateur that doesn't want to use software without a proper licence is an extremist in your eyes? 95% of the amateurs don't need any feature that gimp doesn't have, and 99% of the amateurs don't want to buy expensive software like PS. So gimp would be certainly not dead, if Adobe released PS for Linux.
Microsoft is on the list... hiding after Lockheed.
Including Microsoft is a straightforward decision. I guess they figured that at some point they'll need a supplier of mine sweeping software, so they picked the leading one.

It's great when first monday dismantles p2p claims, but not when they dismantle free software claims?
Oh, that's priceless.
Well, not exactly. Except if you're a fan of ad hominem arguments, which are a classical logical fallacy.
Unfortunately, I think your parents have a legitimate claim on having a prior relationship with you.
Yet another annoying opt-out scheme...

Try reloading the frontpage several times. The category will change between BSD and Linux randomly.

What if they released Photoshop Elements for Linux?

I have no idea what a "theater weapon" is, but I'd like to have one in order to remove those annoying heads from the 6 feet people in front of me.
