It's a stress induced thing. You have this little contraption that can go off at anytime without warning. You can be in your happy place and all of a sudden, a loud noise (a charging, screaming animal) or a vibrating thing (a huge bug trying to claw it's way into your flesh) attacks you and your body has to react suddenly. Your adrenaline goes up, your body's senses and mind sharpen, etc etc etc.
People's bodies have probably been conditioned by the radio waves to put themselves into a perpetual stress loop, constantly on the alert for a charging, clawing animal/bug/cell phone.
I can imagine a few bored hacker types writing something to flood Bandlink with bogus data. "Wow, a million people a day are playing 'Baby Got Back' every hour on the hour!"
I can imagine really, really bored hackers writing a virus to have infected computers spoof data. A new world-wide phenonmena: Polka Love songs!
If musicians had a good way to deliver their music/art/books/etc directly to the consumer, what need would they have of the big[1] distribution companies?
Instead the authors would need:
a) server hosting
b) advertising
c) agents who could get them airplay and/or tour venues
and would no longer need
d) to press CDs, DVDs, etc.
e) select the least painful contract from a handful of distrubutors
This would:
-reduce costs- by cutting out the middleman/distributor.
-increase competition- cheaper "distribution" costs would allow more artists to compete for your money.
-decrease pollution- no need to burn fuel for cd making factories, delivery trucks
-increase greenspace- no more need for brick and mortar stores
-shift jobs from music retail stores and fat cat distributors[1] to high tech server hosting companies and slimy advertising firms. (In other words they would have to get "real" jobs.);-)

That's like saying public message boards that allow anyone to post are leading to the demise of logical, well thought out public debate & discussion... Err, wait a minute.

Just my unproven, crack inspired theory. YMMV.

Wouldn't an encrypted file system be a tad more convienent? Everything is 'secure' even if They(tm) scan your harddrive w/o booting from it.
As others have stated, the email features can be enabled via a cronjob.
