Heh, that might be fun: Put together soundtracks from gay porn and snuff films on a PMP on infinte repeat, and stick it and an Alexa or Google device in an otherwise soundproof box.

Because the more people will use them, the more they are bound to become, first, a commodity, then eventually become mandatory (of course for national security reasons). This logical path is so obvious that I have a really hard time believing that it won't actually happen. Hope to be proven wrong.

You, and the guy below you, really sound like trollololololols. I'll just say this: if I'm still alive and the world has become that far gone, then I won't want to keep living in it -- and I'd take as many jackbooted thugs with me as I could before they nailed me.

Let's just say that underneath all the cynicism I display there seems to be an indellible spark of hope that people will evolve and stop being so gods-be-damned dumb about everything. I hope that they wake up one day and realize they're being ass-raped by streaming services, and they turn around and start wanting to own copies of music, movies, and printed books again.

I'm not even anything but a wireless customer of theirs and this pisses me off.
I don't like them as a company to start with and had been half-heartedly looking to dump them for something cheaper. Anyone have any suggestions? All I need is wireless, nothing else, don't have or want a smartphone, just need basic cellular service and texting. Anyone have any opinions about Consumer Cellular? I know they market to senior citizens, but if they can cut my $55 a month bill in half when I barely use even 100 minutes of calling a month, then I don't care, I'd just as soon do whatever I can to dump AT&T.

  5. Re:CDs... the most under-appreciated music format on Best Buy Stops Selling Music CDs (cbsnews.com) · · Score: 5, Insightful

And now its name is mud, the CD an object of widespread scorn. How did it come to this? Why did this brilliant thing fall so far out of fashion?

I think I can answer that for you.

Greed. Plain and simple. You buy a copy of something, you can listen to it thousands of times for free after that, you can copy it, you can rip it and put it on your PMP -- and they can't insert ads, they don't make another penny off it -- and you can sell the used CD later if you're tired of it, and get some money back. They don't like that. They want you to pay, pay, pay forever. So they start something called 'streaming services', which is just a fancy way of saying 'rent you some music for a monthly fee', and voila, you pay, pay, pay forever. An essential part of this marketing strategy is to indoctrinate the masses that CDs are 'old fashioned', something your grandparents use, uncool, un-hip, something that you should be ridiculed for if you actually buy them. Sadly, people are dumb, dumb, dumb, and they fall for this bait, hook line and sinker. So you have what we've got here today: 'owning' things is considered obsolete and uncool, and having to pay, pay, pay forever is the new hotness. As I said before: people are dumb, dumb, dumb.

  6. Owning is better than renting on Best Buy Stops Selling Music CDs (cbsnews.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

'Streaming services' are just renting in disguise, if you pay for it. They'd put an expiration date on you memory and make you forget you heard any of it if they thought it was possible and they could get away with it. Eventually people will come back to wanting to own copies of things they like.

I've worked on ICEs since I was in my mid teens, and that was a long time ago now. ICEs are massive, messy, finicky, and over-complicated for what they have to do, and they produce toxic gasses that are no good to anyone. We need to get rid of them. Might take 20,30,40,50 years, but it needs to happen. Coming up with 'alternative fuels' just draws the process out and makes it more painful for everyone. Wouldn't you rather have a car that's all electric, nice and clean, safe, no emissions, low maintenance? Given time we can replace aircraft engines, too.

Besides which these rich bastards can afford to live in nice climate-controlled homes with purified air and water while they wait for the Rapture to come take them back to Heaven, why should they give a fuck about what the plebian sinner average citizens have to live like? The rest of us are all going to Hell so far as they're concerned anyway.

Don't you Trump supporters see it? Trump does not give a fuck about YOU any more than he gives a fuck about anyone else. We, as a civilization, need to establish a timeline by which we systematically obsolete and replace ICE technology with something else.
