Back in the early 80s, apple had a monopoly on home computers. Or a near monopoly. They also donated computers to schools so kids would grow up using apples. That and to increase sales of computers, I know that's how I got my apple//e, by asking my father if I could have a computer at home like the one in school.
I don't know why people are so eager to jump in bed with one monopolist when they clearly hate another.. Is it because Apple somehow redeemed itself? Apple still sells software for its own systems that it refuses to port to other systems. They refuse to open their architecture.
I also see a lack of any real content on the page, or at least a lack of content I couldn't find in my apple//e manual. This will probably change soon, but it's too early to declare Jobs a savior yet.
Not that I think this is a bad thing, I just don't want to see/.ers getting their hopes up only to have them dashed when we can no longer buy computers that are beige.
It hasn't gotten a whole lot better, but I think you're more likely to find specalized programming now rather than the 2 sports channels, 3 pay movie channels, 2 shopping channels, and the 30-some channels of reruns of Lucy, Gilligan's Island, MASH, Newhart, Cheers and other assorted washed up shows.
Kind of like FM radio being 90% the same 50 songs by 40 artists.
98.3 - Easy Listening 101.5 - big mix 99.9 - Moldy oldies #I think, not exactly sure. 101.1 - Doo-wop
There's a few others also, I don't remember where they fit in or what their freq is. FM radio today is turning into what cable television was in the 80s and 90s. Lots of the same crap with very little difference between. Too much overlap.
Treating your employess well? What a concept! You mean you shouldn't write them paychecks that bounce? And you mean to tell me I should actually pay their health insurance with the money I take out of their paychecks? That's a riot! Naw, I think I'll stick to the age old "a good boning every now and again keeps the workers in line". It's worked for the past 50 years for Casket Shells, and it'll work for another 50.
It won't save us any money on insurance, it'll just mean bigger profit margins for insurance companies. I'm just waiting until we reach the "Insurance event horizon", which can't be too far off.
All the Patriot Act did was codify existing policy. The government already was tapping communication without warrants, they just couldn't use that information in court. But they did use it to step up investigations.

I thought the real reason cellphones were banned in airplanes was so the airlines could maintain their monopoly on air to ground communication via $20/minute phone service.

Last christmas I asked my grandparents(who always want to spend about $300 on my christmas presents) to get me a go board and pieces. She came up empty handed. None of the stores she went to had even HEARD of the game. You might try looking at some SCA events.
It's funny. I like adelphia for their pipe to my house. Their mail service is shit. Their news is shit. Their support is shit. Call support to report a problem? Well, better know what to say if you had windows, because the techs there are clue-negative when it comes to *nix.
"What version of Windows are you running"
"X11R6 with the icewm front end, what difference does that make. I can ping the gateway but half the hosts after it die somewhere around hop 7. Problems in galveston?"
"whatwhatWHAT?"
Now adays I just call Tony down the local office. He's a funny guy. Always says "Well, we appreciate you, we like UNIX users on the network."
That won't work, because of slashdot's stupid practice of linking to every single word in an article that can be linked to. Even if it's only cnn or yahoo, they'll put a bloody link there.
Nowhere does it say to disregard forces other than time that may change the measuring device. It's like saying that an arc welder speeds up time, because if I wear a wristwatch while welding, it'll run fast.
(For those who don't know, the magnetic field created by a welding lead in use will seriously mess with a quartz watch)
I thought the reason that clocks ran faster in the attic than the basement was because of gravity's affect on the MECHANISM rather than gravity's affect on time. Likewise could be said about the atomic clocks. The clock is travelling thru quite a bit more space than it would if it were sitting, could subatomic particles affect it's function and accuracy?

For the most part, in the SCA, heavy weapons combat is done with rattan sticks wrapped in duct tape, made to look like swords. Here are the armored combat rules. If you look at weapons standards, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Wouldn't it be:
At BASF, We don't make the nanotech, we make it smaller.
They're usually pretty smart about their advertising.
Perhaps it's because they don't make the ad copy, they make it more intelligent.

How will this help me with my keyboard that's painted flat black with no letters/numbers on it?

Nice way to show it.
When I read the headline, I thought it was yet another backdoor in login, like the one Ken Thompson put there in the early days of UNIX.
What's the percentage that know the difference between "lose" and "loose"?

No, more likely they're using the Mongolian Hordes Technique. It's much more appropriate in this sense

Not only have they had netbsd support in the kernel, they've had USB2 support too!
That'll teach me to post on less than 2 pots of coffee.
NetBSD has had NetBSD support in current for quite some time. Does that make it number 2?
