I must admit I'm not looking forward to this one... but what do I know? I saw a musical version of Plan Nine From Outer Space in Kansas City, and that was bloody brilliant. Had an actor hiding his face a la Bela Lugosi and everything.
The first, and probably most profound, thing we'd learn if we encountered alien life, is just that it exists. Humans would gain a new sense of our commonality. We seem to easily fall into "us and them" thought patterns -- nothing's going to stop us thinking tribally unless there's a whole new "them" out there.
We wouldn't have to go there for this to happen. Just find evidence of a civilisation.
It'd be more than a new gadget... just think of the impact on religions and philosophies...

Best way to go, indeed.
As for paying your way, I've been wondering if there might be a geek alternative to the usual trick of taking odd bar jobs and the like.
Seems to me that a lot of the little places you'll find as you travel around don't have web sites -- or, if they do, they're often out of date.
Would it be possible to travel around with a rucksack and a laptop, offering to do web design in exchange for bed/board/a bit of cash?
Anybody tried this?

No, no... keep going! You left out the bit about where you work, and how we can get jobs there!
