    Thats why manufacturers should be in control of updates and not carriers.
    Manufacturers should be the ones to release updates (though a manufacturer provided update system). Apple did it and it works GREAT (and Apple doesnt have to delay updates waiting for "carrier acceptance" or whatever BS the carriers want to do)

    Then we wont have situations like the Telstra branded HTC Desire where the manufacturer has released an update for the phone but the carrier is deliberatly holding up the release of the update.

    Give it a chance, I am sure people over at xda-developers are trying to figure out how to run code on the things as we speak (or if not, will begin doing so once the right people get hold of WP7 phones.

    Microsoft should throw everything it has into finding a way to make IE9 work on all those "IE6 only" web sites. Then they could finally stop all support (patches etc) for IE6.

    My #1 beef with these moves is that they try and come up with definitions for "violent video games" or the like that completly ignore the ESRB ratings system.

    If they worked WITH the ESRB and its ratings system, there might not be such an outcry from the industry.

    Although I suspect there is a lot of concern about the ESRB being "the fox guarding the henhouse" (and not being strict enough when it comes to games that should be rated M or AO but get rated T or M instead after pressure from the publisher), especially given things like the Grand Theft Auto incident (which was blown way out of proportion since you needed to modify the game to get at the content AFAIK)

    So you write the RFQ or whatever so that it says "vehicles must be compatible with Ford Crown Victoria spare parts, maintanence proceedures and support" not "vehicles must be crown victorias"

    That way, anyone who can build a vehicle that will slot right into the police departmnent support networks without any need for driver/mechanic/etc retraining or re-purchase of spares/equipment/etc can win.

    A big part of the problem is when films shot in 2D (regardless of when they were shot) are "converted" into 3D just to make a buck.

    If its a 3D film it should be shot in proper 2-camera 3D (like Avatar was) and should have a director that knows how to use 3D.

    Didn't these guys get elected on the promise of LESS censorship and LESS civil liberties violations?
    The only thing they have done so far on that score is to cancel the planned national ID card (and they only did that because it was costing so much money, not because they cared about civil liberties)

    Is there ANYONE we can vote for in western countries like Australia, New Zealand, EU countries, US etc that will actually do something about giving people back the civil liberties they lost in the 10 years or so since some idiots crashed a couple of planes into some skyscrapers?
    Is there ANYONE we can vote for that will do something GOOD when it comes to IP law and not just listen to the big end of town

    MP4 is not free. Its encumbered by patents.
    WebM/VP8 on the other hand, Google says its not encumbered by patents and the MPEG people say it is patent encumbered.

    Until such time as the MPEG people can show proof that WebM/VP8 is in fact patent encumbered, I not inclined to believe them.

    A number of these companies (especially those where the original product comes from China) continue to violate the GPL as applied to the Android Linux kernel.

    Now some people may not care about such things but this is /. so I hope people here care :)

    States all over the union have passed laws restricting "violent video games" (with various definitions for that term) and every time the courts have overturned them as unconstitutional.

    Why do the states keep wasting taxpayer money on laws that they know wont survive in court? (are they just trying law after law until someone finally finds language that wont get overturned?)

    The difference in a murder trial is that the inner workings of the gun dont matter.

    All that matters is whether the prossecution can prove that the gun in question DID fire the bullets used to kill the victim (something that can generally be done these days by balistic comparison of the bullets from the victim and bullets test-fired from the gun) and who was the one who fired the gun.

    There has to be a material out there that is strong enough to handle the abuse of students AND affordable to make in large quantities.

    Is there a variety of metal that would be cheap enough for school desks?
    What do they make furniture (tables etc) in prison cells out of? Although I suspect school desks in many schools would get abuse far worse than any prison furniture would...

    Obvious answer is to do just what is being said. High schoolers starting at say 10am or 10:30am and finishing at 5pm
    Middle and prep schoolers starting at say 9am or 8:30am and finising at 3:00pm or 3:30pm or whatever

    So you keep the staggered times, just move them later in the day.

    I will not be buying/playing Diablo 3 (despite being a HUGE diablo 2 fan)
    Why? Simple:
    1.The "everything goes through the online system" crap (same reason I did not buy Command & Conquer 4)
    2.Too many gameplay changes from Diablo 2 that I dont like (changing the way skills work for example, changes to the potion/health/etc system, others that I cant remember off the top of my head)
    3.Abuse of the legal system by Blizzard (bnetd etc)
    4.The fact that Blizzard are owned by Vivendi who continue to lobby governments the world over for ever more draconion IP rules

    If I was going to pick up a new RPG to replace my copy of Diablo 2 and my high level Barbarian it would be something from Bethesda like Oblivion or Fallout 3. Bethesda doesnt seem to have done anything evil as far as I can find with Google.

    Actually, the Apache license IS compatible with the GPL version 3.
    Its not compatible with the GPL version 2 (which is what SUN used for OpenJDK so they didnt get hit by the patent clauses in GPLv3)

    IMO, SSL should go away.
    Instead of SSL, new encryption for the web would appear using DNSSEC.

    Certificates would be stored in DNS. The same certification and signature that certifies that "www.blah.com" matches to "1.2.3.4" would certify that is the correct public key for www.blah.com.

    Storing certificates in DNS prevents a rogue CA issuing a certificate for a site.
    And it prevents say NSA etc getting fake certificates made up (no evidence exists to suggest this has happened but lots of suggestion that it could)
    It also prevents a certain kind of man-in-the-middle attack used by some firewall products that basically install their own root CA on all the client PCs and use that to carry out MITM attacks (either to block banned websites or to monitor communications for theft of confidential information)

    And yes, I did see such a firewall product in the past (cant find a cite for it now)

    I say we offer him a vastly reduced sentence IF (and only IF) he provides enough valid information about others involved in the botnet to lead to more arrests. If he does not share the info, hit him with the full force of the law. Lock him up and throw away the key. Oh and a ban on ever using anything that counts as a "computer" for the rest of his life. Threats of life in jail might make him more likely to give up whoever he was working with (more to the point, the money men involved)

    Regardless of what happens, this conviction needs to be made public in a big way. This thing should be HEADLINE NEWS. If this thing is made public, it should increase public awareness of the fact that there are nasty people out there doing nasty things to your computer and that you need to do something about it and thats a good thing.

    The opposition seems not just opposed to the NBN but to anything at all that weakens the near monopoly of Telstra on fixed-line communications (there are a few places where alternatives such as Optus Cable exist but for most of this country, if you want fixed-line phone or internet, you need to go wtih Telstra)

    A lot of those are actually bots that listen for any query and based on it, return a plausable sounding result that really points at a virus.

    Anyone who is affected by a body should have a vote for that body.

    If your house is covered by the HOA, you should get a vote at HOA mettings and HOA director elections. If not, then no.
    If you are a shareholder of a company, you should get a vote at shareholder meetings. If not, then no.
    If you are living in a country, state, county, city or local area governed by a particular government/council/whatever, you should get a vote for that government/council/whatever when elections are held. If you are not living in that area, then no, you shouldnt get a vote.

    If you are resident in the USA then you should get a vote in the US elections.

    If you are not resident in the USA (e.g. only there temporarily and will be leaving it) then no, you shouldn't get a vote.
