That's not the real price of the iPhone however. Unlocked iPhones in Australia are around the $750 - $800 mark.

Flamebait? By pointing out the OpenMoko's obvious downsides to the iPhone? Are you kidding me? The overzealous sensitive mods are out in force!

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the OpenMoko, but the execution is poor considering the considerable competition. People are developing plenty of apps for the iPhone because it is popular and it does have a very polished user interface. The iPhone has staying power. The OpenMoko? Not so much.

Because OpenMoko looks like the iPhone's ugly cousin from Kentucky? How about the fact that the iPhone already has numerous apps and a lot of momentum in app development? How about the fact that the standard software on the iPhone is much more polished than anything the OpenMoko will produce?

I'm more interested in Android and very interested in what platforms may support it. (You know if, if it gets out of Beta(tm) stage)

Actually, they have better than nothing.

Let's say you become very proficient, even a master at using Photoshop. Which means that you won't to ever have to use any other competing software... Then say one day you become a professional who needs the use of Photoshop, how more likely to buy it would you be. As an additional plus what software do you think you would recommend to your colleagues?

Apps like Photoshop have a lot to gain from casual piracy. However people who pirate games are just killing the PC gaming industry and have already damaged what used to be a great gaming platform. It annoys me that people will happily buy PS3 / XBOX360 games but pirate EVERYTHING for PC. An additional point to that is anyone who pirates games that run on Linux & Mac deserve to be hung drawn and quartered, companies that release games for these platforms definitely deserve to be rewarded.

I don't mind OS X's update tool. It only pops up for critical stuff (and I often check it every couple of weeks or so anyway)

I find it fairly unobtrusive as I can select 'download only,' leave it in the background for later (or install the updates that don't require restarting)

It may also be an Operating System Illusion as I don't find leaving windows in the background very annoying, unlike Windows or Gnome/KDE. Cluttered taskbars get to me after a while (and grouping sucks)

(on a side note I actually use Webkit nightly builds for day to day browsing)

Don't like their policies, don't buy their product. There's certainly no reason other than you *like* the iPhone to buy it. You don't need one to function properly with clients & coworkers. You don't need one to talk to be able to call other people. You don't need one to be able to use mobile internet.

There is no lock in. And you do not *own* the SDK by buying an iPhone. And when you do license the SDK, you have to adhere to Apple's policies. If you don't like it, don't do it.

This is not a case of property rights at all.

Could Apple face regulators for restricting third party development on THEIR SOFTWARE which is on THEIR HARDWARE which does not in any sense of the word have a monopoly.

    Somehow.. I doubt it.

People seem to forget that Apple don't need to make it easy for people to develop for the iPhone. They don't have to assist at all. At. All.

Whilst I may disagree with their tactics, I'm certainly not going to tell them how to run their business. And whilst the Microsoft comparisons will be coming out of the woodwork like hungry mutant termites, it's simply not the same. Windows & Office locks people into a platform by being an established monopoly, it also uses this established monopoly to lock people into their other products. What this is, is simply Apple giving people a piece of cake and not letting them eat it. Sure it sucks, but you know what - don't like it; don't develop for it. Simple.
