They probably have robots that would be far better "slaves" than we would. Tourism? Maybe, but I think they'd be more likely to come to study us. Much like we send scientists to Africa to study chimps & gorillas.
Interpreters don't multitask. They task-switch. It's not possible to talk & listen at the same time. And I see many people fail to talk and think at the same time.
If some large goon is charging at a cop, frothing at the mouth, the cop is within his rights to zap the fool. The problem is when the cop zaps someone because he mouthed off, or maybe just didn't move fast enough to suit the cop. The taser is a legitimate alternative to the billy club. It is NOT a legitimate alternative to trying to talk down a mildly agitated person.
I don't recall any stability issues that were above anything I experienced on Windows 3.1 at the time
That's the problem. OS/2 was stable, but most of the apps were Win31 apps, and they crashed worse on OS/2 than they did on Windows itself. The only advantage is that I didn't have to reboot.
I thought they were to tell the driver they were approaching a KMart.

Steve Jobs has introduced something very close to this in the iPad. The only barrier at the moment is that the iPad is intended to be a secondary computing device tethered to your primary device. But, it will only take a few tweaks of the software and hardware to turn it into a low-end priamry computing device --- something that is suitable for 80% of users.
That's A barrier, but not the only one. The absence of Flash, and the high price are also significant barriers.
I think you're right about where Steve is aiming, and it would be nice to see a computer that my mom could use with little or no help from me, but at this time, the iPad isn't it.

Between the format wars (.doc,.docx, open office.doc,.odt, etc) and between the HTML / Browser standards (ie6, ie7, ie8, firefox, safari, opera, etc), PDF seems to be the only consistent way to view things across all OS's. Sadly, it's very useful for that reason...
There's always txt files. They might be ugly and no bells/whistles, but AFAIK, nobody's ever gotten infected by one.

Despite the name, a laptop gets uncomfortable there after awhile. Not only do I notice the weight, but the damn thing puts out quite a bit of heat.

True, but I also thought it was funny talking about "filthy hands" on a touch device.:)

You think it's dropping now? Just wait until more of the traders get their computers working!
Yes, you are. BTW, that's my money.
It would be better if it DID suck ash. Unfortunately, it blows!

Yeah, and not a single plane could fly the whole time!
Well, since we seem unable to get there now, even with 50 years of "progress", one does have to wonder.
You could probably join a class-action. I know a lot of people who break out in profanity everytime they use a Windows computer.

Is it still on ATMs? I know the ATM I use is on Windows. I know because I saw it during a bluescreen.

Would that be the Max iPad?

It doesn't say much for Toyota's quality when the emergency shutdown is exactly the same as on my cheap Windows PC.
But don't you need an app for iPhone, another app for Android (seperate apps for 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1), and now an app optimized for iPad?
Or just enter "password" "pa$$word" or "12345". Those will unlock 99% of home users PCs.
And for slashdot, that's saying something.
I strongly suspect that the pork in Farmville is cheaper than the pork from the Council.
Unfortunately, my shoes are also made in China.
Toyota will learn what went wrong with its software, and NASA will find out how to get a vehicle into space.
