It was a nice week after Iowa to think that at last we might get a break from the Bush-Clinton dynasties. It's already been 20 years we've had to live with it (Bush Sr. 4, Clinton 8, Bush Jr. 8).
And if you include the office of VP, you can add another 8 years to the dynasty. A BushClinton has been either Prez or VP for 28 years!
Anyone who drives ANYWHERE that can be reached in three minutes is just plain lazy. Exceptions can be made for when you're sick or for those times when you need prophylactics, like, immediately. But otherwise, it's just pathetic.
Not neccesarily. I probably live about a 3-5 minute drive from my mom, and it's a fairly easy walk in good weather. But what if it's 115 degrees? What if it's 20 below zero? What if it's raining cats, dogs, and pigs? What if I'm carrying 50 pounds of groceries? There are plenty of good reasons to drive, even if it IS a short distance.
Too bad Medicare & Social Security have been looted by Big Government. Maybe if we had all the money that has vanished into the government's black hole, we could afford to take care of our parents ourselves.
A company named "Peach" or "Prune" or some such, lead by another man like Jobs, of whom there are thousands, but who were born in slightly different circumstances or slightly too late to replace Jobs would have led it. Your personality cultism is showing. No one is irreplacable.
Probably, but would it have done as well as Apple/Jobs? It's just as likely that "Prune Computers" with its "Pit/OS" would have gotten eaten alive by Microsoft.
1) fugitives (bail jumpers, jail escapees, 'enemies' of the government) 2) illegal aliens 3) coma patients 4) people in their bomb shelter in Montana waiting for the Russians to drop the bomb.
I'm fairly sure that most illegals & coma patients are getting some sort of aid. They also vote more often than your other two groups.
All governments aer "nannies" to larger or smaller degree. Overall I'm not convinced the US one is all that much less nannyistic than say the Australian or many European ones.
Which is why I plan to vote for Ron Paul. Everyone else seems to be pro-nanny.
The British government was designed in the wake of a series of civil wars and revolutions to give the politicians the illusion of power while largely restraining them from actually doing anything. Recently they've been starting to wriggle out from that a bit, and sometime in the next couple of hundred years we're probably going to have to round them all up and have them shot (again - this seems to be necessary every 3 to 4 centuries), but for the most part they're so buried in infighting and bureaucracy that they can't cause any real trouble.
Interestingly, we had the same idea on this side on the ocean. But we're moving faster than you guys. Our politicians already need to be shot (though it might be awhile before we actually DO it), and the infighting and bureaucracy doesn't keep them from screwing everyone else.

I'd like to see how Sears will produce profits if everyone quits buying their products. As President Truman said, "The buck stops here". Different "buck", but you get the idea.
One problem is that this will be done by the same idiots who are currently checking my shoes, electrocuting helpless foreigners and matching the phonetic value of my name to the list compiled by bulying and torturing people being suspected of having a connection with someone suspected (but never proven) of being terrorist. IOW, idiots who wouldn't know a "terrorist expression" from indigestion.
Who was it that explained that "CyberSpace is where the Bank keeps your money".
SL's not that much more fake than Dollars made up by the Federal Reserve
Good point, but the money in RL banks is protected by the law, and the FDIC. If my money goes *poof*, someone goes to jail for fraud and I get my money back. Even if it IS ones & zeros in the computer.
Well, once I was talking to my mom on the landline, and my iPhone rang. The landline got static noises, and the static quit after I directed the iPhone call to my voicemail.
I agree that upgrades are Fedora's weak spot. I upgraded from 7 to 8 without reinstalling or burning CDs, but it required some googling and a few "magic incantations" (otherwise known as command-line stuff). I'd like to see one-click upgrades like Ubuntu has.
I have no problem with competition between the distros. That will benefit everyone. I agree that they are both good distros. I'm currently using Fedora 8, but I've tried Ubuntu, and they are both comparable, IMO.
I see no problem with Fedora & Ubuntu competing against each other. In the process, they both become better OSs, and more credible competition to Windows.
I don't know you, but myself I would be quite nervous about installing my father's PC for example with something considered as a 'testing ground' from the maker!
In practical terms, I don't see much difference between Fedora and Ubuntu. If I really want stability, I wouldn't use either one. I'd use CentOS or Debian.

But, Dean had a better voice.
That depends. Was the AI written by Microsoft?

Hey, this is the most current news /. has ever posted. Wait until tomorrow's dupe before complaining.
who thought they were looking for life on Europe?

You KNOW you've been wasting too much time on /. when your dreams get duped!
But I've never understood why anyone would use REAL money in a FAKE world!

For me, it's financial management. Even though Quicken seems to get worse with every "upgrade", it's STILL better than gnucash.

I'm sure Apple has a bigger piece of the pi, er I mean pie, than that.
Wasn't this black hole shooting at a galaxy last week? Or was it a different hole?
Yup! And it's the wrong one. Where ads are concerned, I'd rather subtract.
