Anyone using e-mail for emergency communication should be flogged. It's just not that reliable -- have they never seen a mail server sit on an e-mail for ten hours because of a network glitch?
I've sometimes taken advantage of emails unreliability. "Oh, was there a meeting? Sorry, I didn't get the email".
Regarding the ad skipping arm race you mentioned, I don't know about TiVos in the US, but TiVos in the UK don't take any note of the ads. The ads get recorded as usual.
If you want to skip the ads, you skip them not the TiVo. There is a hidden facility to skip forward 30 seconds each time you press a button on your remote, but there is certainly no automated facility available out of the box.
Tivo works that way in the US too. There's only 3 choices for dealing with commercials. 1. Use the (undocumented) 30 second skip. 2. FF past the SOB's 3. Suffer!
What did I do before I had a cell phone? I drove with smoke pouring out my car, praying I got to safety before something blew up! And though something like that probably won't happen with my current car for a very long time, there's many other things that could happen. Yes, I survived for years without a cell phone, sometimes in crappy cars, but I had some tense times where I wished I had a cell phone.
Depends on your idea of "too long". When I tried it, it took over a week between my creating an undersized LFS partition and my actually booting the darn thing. And LFS "out of the box" isn't useful for much except, maybe creating another LFS. I'd probably fare better now, since my current machine is much faster, and has enough HD for a 2nd distro.
I sorta started with Slackware, but at the time, my HD was too small for a usable distro + Windows. It wasn't until 1999 that I had enough room to use Linux as anything but a toy. I tried RedHat first, but wasn't quite happy and did a lot of distro-hopping. Finally, I discovered that Slackware was still around and installed 7.0 (and it still looked familiar from the old days). I still try other distros, but I always seem to return to Slack.
I'm NOT too happy about RHN storing that info, but at least RH doesn't have a long history of abuse like Microsoft does! And why the !@#$ is it neccesary? Certain OS's *cough*Debian*cough* can update your system without storing any data.
One thing that bothers me is the lag time between the release and the boxed sets. I frequently buy software at CompUsa, and it takes a long time to get Mandrake after the ISO is released. They never DID get 9.0! And I heard that ordering direct from Mandrake wasn't much better. I'm in favor of keeping free downloads, but it seems to me that having a long period where you CAN'T get a boxed set encourages freeloading.
I think the only number that must be taken in care in order to see if the kernel is stable or not is the second (4), so it is pair and COMPLETLY STABLE (when released), not unstable has of 21.
Right now, 2.4.21 IS unstable, since it doesn't exist yet.
I agree! Most of bullies I fought were bigger than I was, but I ACTED big! I fought back, and the bullies soon learned to pick easier targets. Also, I AM American, but my HS days were over 20 years ago. It's doubtless worse now.
I can sure relate to that! I had a lot of problems with bullies, especially in junior high! But I had it better than some. Though I was skinny, I had a temper and was willing and able to fight back. Most of the bullies were bigger than me, but they soon learned that I wouldn't be intimidated. I also was very lucky, in that the fights were "fair". Just him and me with no weapons. In a more brutal school, I could have seen myself going the Columbine route!
Anyway. HDTV sets do *not* have to cost $6,000. You can get a HDTV-capable set for as little as $1400 from Sony. That's a nice 32" Wega flatscreen.
Big Whoop! Only 10X what I paid for my TV! OK, it's only 19", but that's a good fit in my small living room.
HDTV-capable TV's generally don't have the tuner. Many of their components are the same (Mitsubishi is a good example of this), but you'll need either an outboard tuner - about $800 - or a cable box/dish box that supplies the HD signal to your set.
I'd mod you up if I hadn't already shot my mouth off here! I have hundreds of Video tapes! If they even HAVE them in DVD it would cost a fortune to buy them! Besides, everyone knows DVD's will be obsolete in 2020!:)
Whether I answer the phone or not, the ringing breaks my concentration far worse than any quick pop-up & ding from my email ever could!
It varies. Sometimes I can jump right in, and other times it takes awhile. But I don't think I've ever HAD an uninterrupted 3 hours!

What they mean is Eye-Control! They control your eyes! And your ears too!
It still ain't fair! That dag-nab new fangled automobile put my horse-n-buggy out of business!
EXACTLY!!! My reason for getting Tivo has nothing to do with commercials. It has to do with watching what I want when I want!

I just recently got a cell phone. Strictly for emergency use; it would suck if my car broke down in the middle of nowhere without it.

The "value-added" features in those other distros is one reason I use Slackware.

So, what does that mean for life on Uranus?
So, that settles it. There's no intellegent life on Europe!
how much of the dust in my house came from outer space?
You can do whatever you want with your code! But if it has such a restriction, it ain't GPL, and it fails many definitions of "open".

Do you REALLY want to know? I don't!
Mod this up!

Oops, did I say 10X? Try 15X the price of my set!
