Why not just set up a new system on Linux. Then find some way to get PostGres, mysql or modern database client/library of your choice running on the old Unixware server. Then write a script to run on the old Unixware server that accesses the old data on whatever database is being used on the old Unix server using the database driver/client for that old database, grabs that data off the old database, and then using the newly installed *sql client, sends the data to the new Linux server. On the new linux server new software can be written to use the data or you can try to port over the code if you have the sources for the old information system.

Can Nokia Save Itself?

Nokia ditching the Meego stuff was something they should have done sooner. There are just too many mobile OSs around. App developers really only have the resources to target one or two platforms. I have heard people say that Nokia needed Meego to diffentiate, but I just dont see it, at best meego would have been no better than android and probably would have been worse, it would simply not be a selling point, and it was letting market share slip away at a rapid pace while it tried to develop its own OS. If it had gone with Android right away, it would have gotten the immense app ecosystem and an off the shelf OS that would be ready to go right away. It could have had a phone on shelves years ago. Nokia could then soup up Android in any way it needed to later on if it felt it needed improvement. The fact is Meego would not have been any better than Android could have been, and would not have differentiated Nokia, or it would have differentiated them as being worse. People don't care if it has a different OS, they want it to work and Android works. It having a different OS than Samsung would not sell phones. Period. End of story.
Going with Windows Phone was perhaps a mistake, compared with going with Android, but not nearly as much of a mistake of staying with the Meego platform, which would not have been seen as being any advantage to consumers whatsoever, at best it would have been equal to android and simply does not provide with a reason to buy the phone.
Unfortunately for years Nokia killed it self with the not made here syndrome, wasting years developing an OS that would haev done nothing that Android could not do, and probably would have been worse and that people would not want anyway, With the solution staring them in the face with just taking off the shelf android and getting a phone in stores in a month, it really shows how thier ego and arrogance clouded their thinking, willing to bring their company to the brink of destruction than to touch Android because "its not made here".
Nokia is getting what it deserves, just like RIM, because of such arrogance. I expect both companies to be out of business in a few years.

It's too bad that they have not made any more star trek movies since 1996 or so, when the last star trek movie was made. Since then, absolutely nothing. Really someone needs to revive the franchise, a reincarnation of Roddenberry.
I never really liked the TNG set that much, on an esthetic level. Of all of the sets I think that the Star Trek V-VI, and Excelsior class bridge in Vi and Generations were the best. I did not like the biege-orange color scheme on TNG. I also think the backlit user interfaces on V-VI also looked cooler, with the microgamma font etc. I also tend to prefer the Star Trek II-VI uniform types rather than the spandex / pajamas of TNG.
TNG was the best as far as story lines go however, its classic star trek.
the features list are things most kernels have had for a decade or two, but NetBSD acts like they are brand new features? Talking about these features that have been around forever as being the latest and greatest is absurd. The BSDs long ago lost relevance. In many cases cable companies don'[t need it, they just put in an RF band block for channels 1-60 or whatever.
I think cable cards need to be required by the FCC and features for the program guide included. The cable card is best designed to allow for a minimalistic amount of hardware to be included in it, the whole point is for it to be a cheap device. So, the cable card probably includes a software package that is then loaded into the unit . The unit provides an interface for program guide and other user interface drawing. The software package can include program guides and everything else one would get with a set top box. Basically it can be a memory stick.
The fact is muslims have their own countries, that is where they belong and should stay. But, they are not happy with having their own countries, you see, the goal of the Muslims is to take over ther world, destroy all other civilisations and all other religions, and only when every other religion is destroyed, will Allah be satisfied.
I am happy with the traditional ethnic composition and culture of the US, country has a ight to stop immigration, defend its borders, for any reason, including to stop the country from being overrun by invaders who want to trash the countries culture and try to bring in their religion which they then insist no one else can criticize. Enough is enough.
Look, Muslims are extremely dangerous. They do not share our values, and out of so many countries, not a single one is really a successful democracy. Violence, killing, murder of all of those who disagree with Islam unfortunately seems to be in their blood.
I also have had personal dealings with Muslims. It is not like I am ignorant. I would not trust them to tell me the time and I did feel to be in great danger.
let them wallow in their cesspit of stupidity, in the middle east, that armpit of the world. Lets just leave them alone, but keep them the hell away from me.
If you love the Muslims soo much, please, just move to Saudi Arabia, try to set up a christian church there to see how open minded and tolerant Muslims are, and feel the love. You will come running back here squealing like a banshee and will not want to be anywhere near a muslim again.
I was really quite amused to read this response. By the way the embassy, as the masses of angry Muslims were gathering just outside in Egyot, issued absurd press realeses asking Americans not to hurt Muslims feelings. The Embassy is under the Obama administration, who itself repeated the apologies and insults.
Look, as I said in the comment, I more than happy to see the Muslims left alone in the middle east and lets just defend our country and keep them out of here. Your comments are very ignorant abot islam and muslims. These are very dangerous and extreme people. The fact is, simply their presence impairs our freedom of speech. They have murdered Islam critics before (Theo van Gogh) and will do so again. The police cannot be everywhere to protect you from these people. they are militant and they, once again, cannot be trusted.
In fact, whereever muslims have existed in signlficant numbers, they have created problems, including the massive riots we have seen in places such as France and Denmark whenever anyone dares criticize islam. In effect, freedom of speech is already over there because no one there can even criticize the religion now without being in very real and severe danger from the violent Muslim thugs. Once again, I remind you that these muslims are liars, they see themselves as in a holy war against the west, they are the wolf in the sheeps clothing. You seem very gulluble and ignore the risks that they pose, holding onto your absurd delusional idea that they are nice people, but whereever the muslims have gone violence and riots have gone as well.
They have their own countries, and that is where they belong, Quite simple. They have every right to their own countries and that is where they belong and shall stay.
The fact is most Muslims are racists who hate Americans and want to invade the country, destroy christianity, implement sharia law and so on. They see themselves as warriors and laugh at us for how gullible we are for willingly allowing them to invade our country and take their sick, twisted, disgusting values and their absurd, filthy barbaric, war lord religion, with them.
Quite frankly, I do not feel safe living within 100 miles of one of these people and neither should you.
The fact is, There is nothing wrong with preserving our civilisation from people who do not share our values and maintaining the traditional ethnic character of our country. NO credible legal expert would suggest that the United States or any other country does not have a right to control or completely block immigration according to any rules it deems fit. It is a clear right of countries under international law to control immigration in any way they desire, including having as little immigration as they see fit. I am quite happy with the way the US is now and I have no desire to see the country ruined by importing a bunch of violent middle eastern people who think they can trash western civilisations an bring their sick little religion with them.
Since 9-11, we have spent ridiculous amounts of money on security and insulted americans in the most humiliating ways in airport checkins. We all know that Muslims are the most likely to commit an attack on a US airline and yet because we have to be nice to those who want to kill us, we cannot profile so we have to subject americans, to humiliating searches so we dont hurt the muslims feelings.
With the trillions we have spent on the war in afghanistan and insulting security in American airports, there was one simple solution that would have cost us very little and would have mostly solved our security problems without needing a police state and trillion dollar wars: simply ban foreign national Muslims from flying into the US. Costs very little, does not jeopardise the life of US soldiers, preserves the liberty and privacy of Americans, and kills no one. Yet, we have avoided this simple, clean, non violent solution at all costs, instead, we have spent trillions on wars in asia which have killed many and spent trillions of dollars and humiliated everyone in airports.
We need to be quite clear here. It is the right of every american to criticize the Islamic religion however we see fit and we need a government that will defend this right and never apologize for it. We will never allow any form of censorship of such criticisms. I find the attacks on free speech to be especially outrageous considering that Muslims repeatedly threaten to kill and destroy the US and yell death to America among other things.
What I found particularly upsetting that was while Muslims were burning down our embassy and so on, Obamas administration could not stop itself from insulting Americans and their free speech rights and apologizing to Muslims. The US government should never dare tell its citizens what to say, apologize for Americans rights and so on. The liberal media predictably went along and helped propogandize on behalf of the Administration and furthermore help cover up the crimes that were occuring. Romney was correct from the beginning to criticize the administrations response. Simply fact that you have a gathering of threatening looking hoards in front of an embassy in a foreign country should be alarming and this situation is not and never should be a situation where its okay for the US government to go about Insulting americans. Romney was right in criticizing the administrations outrageous responses, even while the protests were still just a gathering outside the embassy, that instead of defending Americans free speech rights, the Administration insulted us and our liberties. However, it is now well know that before Mitt Romney criticized the anti-American rubbish coming from the Obama administration, The administration was aware that there was an actual violent attack occuring on the embassy in Libya.
After Obama's response to the events in the middle east, I am convinced that Romney is the right choice for President and we are not safe with Obama who has too many connections to Islam to be trusted.
I would also add that Americans often have signficant difficulty in understanding the real nature of Islam, Muslim populations and the very real danger they pose to western civilisations. Basically the behaviour patterns, ideas about what is reasonable, are completely different, and they are generally incompatable with western values. In Islam, killing your children if they question Islam, stoning apostates to death, destroying christian churches, are all mainstream. It is hard for Americans to understand that these people do not share our values of respecting others religious beliefs or the limits of what religion would drive people to do. Many americans have a rose glasses tinted view of the world filled with peace loving populations filled with love and kindness. they think that everyone in the world is like them. This is not true! The fact there is no common interest between the west and islam, they are totally incompatable. This idea they do is naive and it is wrong. The fact is the world is an extremely dangerous place filled with people that would love to destroy Western Civilisation, christianity and steal the US away from US and attempt to bring it under Islam. The goal of Islam is not only to dominate the Middle East, it is to eventually dominate and take over the entire planet. Muslims will not be satisfied until all non Muslims have been eliminated. Islam has long history of invading and conquering vast areas from West Africa to Indonesia, destroying every religion and civilisation along the way, spreading Islam with the sword and violence. This has not stopped. They have changed their tactics some but there is a continued burning desire for them to take over the world. Muslims are great liars and are great at playing the wolf in sheeps clothing, in wearing a fake facade of pretty words and lying and smiling in your face, they laugh behind your back when they know you are gullible enough to believe their act. They put on a fake facade of smiles and tolerance but in their hearts they know and hope for the day that they can destroy anyone who questions their religi
Meego was a mistake. With the market maturing android and ios are well established and there is only a room for a few. Windows on paper did not look like a bad idea, Microsoft is a large established software company. An out of the box solution. Nokia wasted too much time developing Meego, too many years, when it could have just taken android right off the shelf and used that instead.
meego was truly a dead end. There are far too many of these mobile platforms. The last thing the world needs is Yet Another Incompatable Mobile OS. Each company trying to do their own OS simply harms consumers, leading to scattered development. Developers basically cannot target more than 2 or so platforms.
It was smart for Nokia to dump Meego but questionable to go with Windows Phone. Like RIM, they should go with Google Android. It is actually confounding to watch companies spend years while their market share slips away, trying to reinvent the wheel, when they could take Android right off the shelf and have something in stores right away.
First off, why does everyone pick on christianity. In fact quiet a few christians do fully accept big bang theory and evolution as science, and are not fundamentalist. of course there are some christians that do not accept science and think that only they are true christians, the fact is, many christians do except science.
Islam is far worse and far less tolerant of those who accept certain scientific facts. And, despite scientific information facts and so on being made available to them they refuse to allow any of this to be considered as many christians have. So, what we see is that Muslims are far more close minded than christians and far mroe likely to use violence against those who swerve in the slightest way from the fundamentalist islamic dogma.
it is worth pointing out that many are Christian and at the same time acknowledge evolution, big bang and so on. The suggestions here that christianity and science are incompatable are not true and perhaps it is people like Broun who do damage to christianity by presenting this extreme position of his as the only kind of christianity. Then, people hear this stuff and think that this is what all christians are like when that is simply not the case.
While atheist seem to have an elitist mentality, what is often seem to be happening to atheist communities seems to indicate severe shortcomings, the fact is many of them are not having many children, studies have been posted right here on slashdot that have shown that since religious people have more children, atheist are basically a shrinking and dying breed. And as well, the social damage that this is harmful to a country. A country does need to be able to maintain and regenerate its population levels adequately and we do need a social structure and fabric that makes sure that this happens.
I beleive in science but I also believe most people need religion in their life to provide moral guidance and as a part of the social fabric needed for our population to regenerate. Many People need the structure that religion provides and basically many need to have a respect for god and life. When we take the structure that religion provides out of peoples lives the results can actually be in many cases disasterous. Murder, drug dealings, theivery, dishonesty, self centeredness, greed, all of these things are condemned and discouraged by christianity. In fact, Christain churches really do teach good values like, viewing children as our most precious gift and responsibility and the main purpose of marriage is to raise healthy children and provide them with a loving, safe household, respect for life, kindness to others, thinking about others feelings and needs, good work and labor to contribute to society, raising children in loving, caring stable households with a husband and wife, honor, decency, compassion, love, charity, kindness and so on. Is this the only way to get these values? No. But many people do in fact benefit from this and basically many do need thec concept of god that insists that they behave in a decent way and that as well that they have family values in which to raise healthy, intelligent children. Many people do need the structures set up for them to guide them. Christianity provides the structure to raise, decent, honest, caring, hard working people.
We forget tht science is capable of many obcene atrocities and when we leave out ethics it can lead to the most monstrous invasions of peoples rights, such as the danger posed by security cameras everywhere to our privacy and electronic tracking of everything people do. Science can tell you exactly how to totally enslave and violate every freedom people have, kill huge numbers of people and so on. All of this is perfectly in line with "science". science just tells you whats possible. It does not tell you whats right and wrong. That is why we need ethics in our lives.
There are many different kinds of christians some who find ways to be compatable with science while keeping their religion. There is no need to throw out religions, which
Think about this for a second. How many people here have jobs in developing software? Who wants programming as a career to conist of writing code without being paid? Now, I suspect that open source software is going to lead to fewer paying programming jobs.
I know that there are efforts to monetize open source software. However I think the tendancy is for a larger number of open source software users to not pay for software than those who would of proprietary software. its not legally required of them to do so.
The fact that open source software probably generates less revenue than proprietary software can only mean fewer programming jobs, its a job destroyer. Add the fact that the software can be so easily and legally copied being open source, it is likely that the programming jobs would be reduced even more since one or two open source projects would replace what may have been 5 or more proprietary products in the market, leading to less job creation.
I am certainly not opposed to the idea of source code being made available to users. Another model is a commercial shared source licence whereby access to the source code is provided when the product is purchased. This can include access to a revision control system, even, so that users of the software can contribute their own improvements back to the developers.
Originally in the old days of computers much software was made available for users. In those days in the 60s, software and hardware was sold as a bundled package, companies like IBM made their money by selling that package, including the hardware. This bundling however was challenged in court and as a result IBM was later required to stop doing this and charge seperately for the software, so software only companies could enter the business. The rise of software only companies meant software had to be monetized alone, it became harder to use hardware revenue to fund its development. As a result, companies became more protective of source code and did not licence it for free use.
Unfortunately the pendulum swung far in the other direction and instead of setting on a shared source model where paying users could access the code, the code was completely blocked off from users.
I have studied international law. In international waters the laws of the ships registered country apply, there also may be application of laws of the country that the ship is going from or two, or of the nationalities of those on board. Which country applies jurisdiction is somewhat situational. It is true that while on paper there is a jurisdiction there, actually getting something done about it takes a country actually deciding to get involved and actually being able to get the criminals. if they go into another country they may be difficult to reach, or track. They may be able to try to extradite if it is known who they are. A big problem with being far out to see is you may be far away from a country that is willing to help you. Or you may be near countries which don't care or that have poor coast guards.
Be careful of where you go,. The Indian Ocean is a danger area. The north atlantic is probably safer as far as pirates but with rough weather in the winter.
Pirates come to mind as a big concern on the seas and the issue is you may be in some places that are far away from help.
As for your other concern, symlinking the items in/bin to/usr/bin could address that, or sh-bang feature like #!bash or #!(allpaths)bash that would just then search all of the paths for bash.
This served a purpose. it kept the core utilities seperate from the add-ons, so you had a seperate directory with a core system needed to have a basic running system with a command line, like ls, seperate from all the other stuff like Openoffice and Firefox. You should be able to have a minimum useable system with just/foo directories, for instance. This can help with troubleshooting purposes, and possibly allowing these to be placed in seperate disks, you could copy out/foo and place it on a small disk and then you could mount/usr/foo later.
If you think that this seperation is not useful,. you clearly do not know what you are talking about. It also shows that OpenSUSE people are just messing things up because they dont know what the hell they are doing.
either it would be some sort of psychic memory or it would be some deeper physics we cannot detect, it operates at levels that are too small to be detectable. for instance. There are often questions about whether the smallest things we can detect, such as quarks are in fact the smallest structure in matter and so on. The fact it is undetectable does not mean there is nothing there. There are also theories about hidden dimensions being present everywhere that basically we cannot detect, its far beyond any capabilitity to detect but the concept exists in a mathematical construct that happens to fit in and sort of extend measurable physical laws, allowing for integration of gravity and EMF and such.
Remember that many items can chemically react even at a low level with the body. You might think that 1 ppm is not much but that is above the maximum contaminate level for many toxins. Things at low quantities can interact.
I also thought some ideas of homeopathy were about not the item, remaining in the liquid and directly chemically reacting but perhaps some sort of metaphysical theory that there was some sort of imprint or memory implanted in surrounded water molecules at some energy or psychic level, and that this would activate the bodies immune system in some way. It sounds like nonsense, but then we would be making an assumption. Only studies could actually see if there were any effect. That someone does not fit into our classical ideas of physics does not mean it can be 100% dismissed, this would assume that something is not possible without actually having any evidence to make a determination. A study looking at effectiveness would help provide that.
Perhaps homeopathy is nonsense but you act like since it might be funded that the sky is falling. As far as I can tell its individual choice sitll to use it and if people feel its worthless, dont use it. Itsthat simple, even if its offered does not mean YOU have to use it.
another thing is minute quanities of substances can have effects on the body, including harmful. You might think "oh 1 ppm is not much, there is no way that this could have an effect", yet the maximum contaminant levels are far below this for many toxins and chemicals can react with the body at this low levels.
I read "revized filesystem heirarchy" and recoiled, this is code word for "Lets change all of the layout to confuse everyone for no good reason becasue we are trying to be cute, using directory names like/OpenSuse System/My Wonderful Applications/Mozilla Firefox/Mozilla Firefox.exe, and/All of My Application Configuration Files/Mozilla Firefox, and all sorts of long names, that are a pain to type, and as well, perhaps confusing things and making things hard to find by failing to keep things well categorized like Unix has been known for.
Basically the directory heirarchy is fine and there is no reason or need to change it so anyone who says they want to change it is creating more problems for users because they think its a good idea to force their whims on everyone else.
Most common users won't use the heirarchy since they will launch programs with the start menu and most applications they use have a series of quick link buttons such as for Documents directory on the left side of the file dialogs anyway.
I dont think its in decline, its mainly just that its saturated so we're seeing more of a replacement cycle. While mobile is unsaturated so there is more room for growth. I think mobile will probably eventually saturate and growth will level off. PC I think in the long run will remain the main way access stuff at home, if people are looking for the best value, most computing more and best computing experience for the dollar, its the PC. Mobile devices are best for mobile use only, when you are at home, the device is by far the most expensive and most inefficient computing device you can use
Id rather not even browse the web or write a letter on a mobile device. Its not just for business devices but for those as well who want a somewhat comfortable home computing experience, not trying to type a letter or look at web pages on a tiny screen. The PC is not dying, to say so is a major misreading of what is going on. Mobile growth is faster because its an unfilled niche, not because they are better at doing what PCs do. Basically, an 8" screen and a chiclet keyboard does not replace a 25" screen with a full size keyboard with about 200 times more storage, processing and memory. If mobile computers came first, and then PCs came along as a new innovation, PCs would be seen as the next great thing, look, 25" inch screens, no moire being stuck oin that chiclet keyboard and 8" screen.
Since when should VMware be associated with anything involving the word "open"? Its a closed source, proprietary product that takes away users freedom to be able to modify and understand what it is doing on their system. At least as a part of all of their licences, give users the access to source code under a non-redistribute licence.
Virtualbox is a much better choice, which I recommend supporting financially. You can trust developers more that is upfront and honest with its code, rather than hides it as if it has something to hide.

As for your other concern, symlinking the items in /bin to /usr/bin could address that, or sh-bang feature like #!bash or #!(allpaths)bash that would just then search all of the paths for bash.
This served a purpose. it kept the core utilities seperate from the add-ons, so you had a seperate directory with a core system needed to have a basic running system with a command line, like ls, seperate from all the other stuff like Openoffice and Firefox. You should be able to have a minimum useable system with just /foo directories, for instance. This can help with troubleshooting purposes, and possibly allowing these to be placed in seperate disks, you could copy out /foo and place it on a small disk and then you could mount /usr/foo later.
I read "revized filesystem heirarchy" and recoiled, this is code word for "Lets change all of the layout to confuse everyone for no good reason becasue we are trying to be cute, using directory names like /OpenSuse System/My Wonderful Applications/Mozilla Firefox/Mozilla Firefox.exe, and /All of My Application Configuration Files/Mozilla Firefox, and all sorts of long names, that are a pain to type, and as well, perhaps confusing things and making things hard to find by failing to keep things well categorized like Unix has been known for.
I guess no one actually does home finances or writes a letter to their relatives anymore.
