I actually found it to be fair comparison. Both the war on drugs and the fight against "piracy" are futile in today's world. There will always be substance abusers as long as there are substances to abuse just as there will always be people willing to get something for free if they think they might be able to do so.
We must refuse to allow our soldiers, citizens, and Government officials to be exposed to trial by the United States and deny their court's self-declared right to investigate, prosecute, convict, and punish Australian citizens for supposed crimes that weren't even committed on American soil.
What I meant was that I'm afraid companies will cease independent multiplayer support (such as individual servers) in favor of locking their online play into entities like The Zone, MPlayer, etc. and then charging us out the wazoo to use them.
I admit, for something like that to happen a lot would have to change from the way multiplayer is viewed today. In addition to that they'd have to be providing a whole lot more content that whats available today. And to make that last point a reality they'd have to virtually eliminate user created content, which is something I dont see going away anytime soon due to the outcry and backlash most game developers would recieve from today's gaming community. Of course there are the publishers holding the proverbial carrot on a stick in front of the development houses making them do things they don't want. I can see the development teams crying, "it was the publisher that made us do it", kinda like the securom fiasco with Ubisoft.
I love the ability to sample the entire album. I wonder if more online distributers will incorporate this? My only beef is that the samples are too brief to get an idea of what the whole song may sound like.
Personally I despise paying for an online game. I just don't see the point in paying a monthly fee for it if I'm already paying to get the game itself?! Besides, IMHO there are already tons of games out there that provide multiplayer for free. My only fear is that monthly fees for online content will spread into the traditional multiplayer arena.
I like the idea you're suggesting--a digital "elf" so to speak. Maybe that'd make for a nice open source project??? However, in order to do everything you're suggesting, today's form factor would be too unmanageble to maintain externally. You'd need to house it in a special carrying case or backback a la a laptop. At best I see it being in a small belt pouch like some of the larger PDAs come with.
In a few years time I think it might be possible to do it externally. Maybe a Wireless USB device you wear on your shirt or as an earpiece where the body of it hangs off the belt?
They've been "here" for quite a while now. I guess they're just not widely used. Case in point: when I went throught basic training back in '97 almost all of the shots were given with needleless injectors. I don't think they called them hyposprays, but they were effectively the same device. IIRC it was basically just a regular shot with a high PSI load behind it. There is a drawback though--you had be really still when they gave it to you or would cut the skin like a little razor (due to the insanely high pressure).
I'd think its more acurately described as a grey market. Last I heard its still legal to do what you want to stuff you've legally purchased. Smashing a TV or XBox is your right since you bought. Why should puting a chip in a device to enable features that you are legally entitled to do be any different (fast forward, play backups). Oh, wait.... I forgot that in the US now you don't have the freedom to do what you want any more unless the corporations say its okay first.
To be honest I had serious reservations about them bringing this one back. However, once I actually sat down and watched it I was blown away. Personally I think they hit a homerun with the pilot and can't wait to watch the new series. They did so many thing right IMO: the Sci-Fi wasn't so much "Fi" as I thought they'd throw at a show of this type. For example: Ballistic weapons, somewhat realistic space flight (thrusters), and the cinematic zooms all help add some realism to the space scenes.
On top of all that they nailed the human side of the story. Family ties, personal relationships, etc all played a huge role in the pilot (perhaps even more so than in the original series). For me, this is the element that makes the show so good.
My only fear is that they change the characters or take away from the dynamics of what they were building.
Then the case can be made that their WEP or MAC filtering was cracked. In this day and age, its not out of the realm of possiblitiy. Think about it. How many bank robbers use their own vehicles as the getway car?
These "stats" don't really mean anything. Look at how easily they are twisted:
The last 100 tech purchases of my household were made by me. My wife was there 75 of those 100 trips. Presto, my wife has now been involved in 75 percent of all electronics purchases.
Remember kiddies, every statistic is backed by money. Every research dollar spent has had some sort of agenda behind it. We can easily see this one is about female empowerment in the digital age.
As many sociologies can tell you, when American pop culture tells you women are being barrated/ignored, what will untimately end up happening is the females still won't get treated like men, only men will get more neutral treatment (everyone gets the dumbed-down approach). Remember the "glass ceiling"? Instead of women earning more in the market place, the real reason female and male earnings are getting closer is because the male earnings have decreased over the last 15 years. The average American had more buying power in the 50's than they do today.
The point is that in the end these sort of studies do nothing to promote equal treatment in the form of raising the lower standard to meet the higher standard, whether it be treatment, pay, etc. Historically speaking its been the other way around.

Time and time again I've found this to be 100% true, not paranoid. Whenever I get a reply back from my congresscriter about this sort of stuff they're always backing the media corporations, not what us, We The People, are actually for. Needless to say I've gotten into a practice of forwarding their emails to all my friends and familiy and play the "look here, see what they're all about" card. I think its safe to say none of my friends and family, or their friends and family (and on down the line) will be voting for these conporate whores.
If only more people would do this sort of thing and point out to everyone they know how horribly corrupt our politicians are I think people would finally see some changes taking place. The only thing though is that most people just blow this stuff off and ignore us "crackpots". That is until someone they know gets hit by a RIAA lawsuit or gets hauled off in the middle of the night by one of Bush's ghestapo pals.
I've been reading the Open Source Network Administration book by James Kretchmar (review here in fact) and its been a really good read. Really applicable to the subject in my opinion.
While AvP is good, the Batman flick linked above is what I can't wait to see. And the way that short was done was nothing less than brilliant! If another Batman film is ever going to be made, I can only pray its as good as this was.
Wow! I made a post about this a while back that was almost word for word the same as yours. Good to know there are people out there the see things for what they are.
I completely agree with you. If you were to follow this thought to completion you'd see that this is what was probably meant to happen. Remember, copyrights are for meaningful works. If a CD sucks and only has one good song on it, why should it be protected if its not meaningful in the public's eye (who will ultimately decide the matter, and not the corporations)?

Yeah, but they could put them to good use by flying them over Area 51.

I thought they opened the Beta to anyone who pre-ordered the game with Blizzard? Maybe this isn't the game I'm thinking of then...

I guess not enough people are using this:

Just my $.02 on the subject.
The law is clear. This is NOT theft, but copyright infringement.

You have GOT to be kidding me.
My god, where is this leading us to? Now we don't even own the stuff we bought in a hardware store?
Will someone PLEASE stop the madness?!
Its true what they say in that "the worst acts in human history were done with the best of intentions".
Great idea. I can't wait to see what happens to your job when the next virus going around uses Port 25 or 80.
