Depending on the game you plan on making you should consider java as an option. It's an easy path to cross-platformness, and has some good deployment options (i.e. web start).
Sun has recently started paying more attention to java as a gaming platform and has been pushing java along with OpenGL as their solution.
If effect the changing interest rates accomplish the same thing that you propose.
High interest rates give people incentives to save money, because they will earn interest. On the other hand low interest rates give people incentive to spend their money, because they don't get shit by putting it in the bank.
Control of the interest rate has shown itself one of man's better control's on the economy. That being said, I think that your spending tax idea sounds like an excellent idea. Not just for individuals either, but for corporations too. Since most of the money they spend will go towards generating them more money the effects on the economy could be significant.
Essentially it is taking a lot of the money sitting around doing nothing (MS has 50 billion or something) and puts it into the economy, thus growing the economy in the process.
I remember reading somewhere that the engineer who first developed the mouse named it the 'X-Y Positional Indicator'. Such a disappointment that it was dumbed down to 'Mouse' for consumers.
I've had my current blue and white macintosh for 4+ years now and it's still going strong. I use it for software development, web, email, and some movie editing.
Of course it's becoming obsolete and I'm drooling over the G5s, but Apple hardware usually lasts a loooong time. I still have a mac SE in the basement that worked fine the last time I plugged it in.
What is it about this condition that people are so angry about it?
We're angry about the fact that a possibly real condition has been expanded to 'explain' the behavior of perfectly normal kids. Medication is the proper response to some things, but way to many kids are being given ritalin when a lot of them don't need it.
Man, I hate all this ADD, ADHD bullshit. Kids have always been hyper, that's just the way they like to be. It used to be that parents would stop them with a stern beating. Nowadays they use a stern dosage of ritalin or something.
Me and my siblings were always causing trouble and stuff, but we weren't medicated as a result, our parents encouraged the better sides of hyperactivity (sports, creative thinking) and we all turned out just fine.
The mac java-dev mailing list is currently up in arms about the fact that other then the tiny blurb from software update there are no release notes for this update.
This is an impediment to mac java developers, and a departure from what apple has done in the past.
Current facility will be followed with a second in 2006
It will be very interesting to see if they also use macs for any followup cluster. If it works out well this could be the start of a macintosh push into clustered supercomputers.
Now that it's becoming uncool to buy microsoft because of their egregious security (even though they are an american company) it's good to see that the US gov is turning to another american company to throw their moneys at.
Not that I blame them. One of the jobs of government is to promote local businesses. The US would do well to develop many different competing computer platforms, rather then have all their eggs in one (shoddy) basket.
I'm also pleased that some other governments (germany, some asian ones) are trying to do the same. Perhaps we may have a range of interoperating platforms after all!
You say that it's cool for the university to hide some of its tuition in the form of overcharging for books?!?
Universities get large amounts of moneys from donors and the government (in civilized places). Nickel and diming the students isn't the solution to any financial shortfalls that they do have.
However I agree that lots of U's waste money on sports bigtime. Universities should be powerhouses of thought and innovation, better college sports doesn't make for any real progress in society.
This seems like a grand idea if SCO is actually billing people through the mail. Although it seems from the other messages in this thread that they are all talk and no action.
Lux 3.0 - the latest and greatest version of my world domination game - was released last week. It's like the boardgame Risk but with random maps and all sorts of bells and/or whistles.
Plus I should say that any while us Canadians are quite silly (as can be seen from our prime minister Jean Poutine) it's a big step up from all the fascist americans we've been hearing aboot, eh.
I like to think of Canada:USA as approximately equivalent to Mac:Windows.
There's less of us, we're more user-friendly, the 'others' don't even remember about us most of the time, and the form factor is often easier on the eyes.
In conclusion I invite all the sane macusers out there in/. land to move your asses to Canada already. It's just like a mac: once you try it out for a while you'll never go back.
What I really think Apple should do is take some of that 4 quallizion dollars they have and put together a real business team. Continue with all the consumer wooing but add a real push into businesses. With OSX they have a very nice offering. Add that with some volume discount on G5s and a real office suite and booya!

Get a slashdot interview with this guy.

So how long before IBM starts selling G5 boxes running linux and openoffice?
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!
That is all.
Me and my siblings were always causing trouble and stuff, but we weren't medicated as a result, our parents encouraged the better sides of hyperactivity (sports, creative thinking) and we all turned out just fine.
One more example of why nerf-gun fights in the office are a bad idea.

For what it's worth, robocode was used to demonstrate java improvements/speedups in multiple presentations at this years WWDC.

Is it kosher?

I was just wondering, what features does iConquer have that Lux lacks?

Pfffft. Shows how much you Americans know about your closest neighbor. It's Jean Poutine, and he's a delicacy.
It's one way of running X on OSX. Another is Apple's X11 client, which is better integrated with the OS.
