This is a big shame. OpenOffice is often held up as the 'solution' to MS office, but it just can't be without a nice native mac implementation.
With the way that Apple has been swinging recently I wouldn't be surprised if they released an office suite of their own for OSX. They already have a powerpoint replacement in Keynote. In panther you will be able to read/write MS Word files with cocoa text apps. They have a simplistic email client in Mail.app, but it could easily be buffed up into an outlook like app, using iCal for calendars, etc.
Apple has shown that they can make seriously kick-ass software, so wouldn't it make sense for them to make a seriously kick-ass word processor already???
Even if they don't, I think that cocoa's newfound ability to read/write MS word files will probably spurn the development of some nice third party office apps.
Ack, the silly lameness filter says that I have too much repetition, so forsooth fair lassy, may thine future be full of ripe cheese and bountiful eggplants!!! Godamn it! Fuck you you stinking lameness filter, accept my post.
If everyone's mom had a mac, then the virus writers would target macs, not windows.
Maybe so, but there's a difference between there being lots of viruses on a platform and those viruses causing havoc. Windows is a very inviting environment for a virus. You're allowed to do all sorts of stuff. That is why viruses cause so much damage to windows infrastructure.
For example, the SoBig worm wasn't bad because it existed, it was bad because it was able to do what it did. In more secure environments this would not have been possible.
This is the single biggest reason that my mother uses a mac. I'm still required for some occasional technical support calls from her, but I can't imagine how bad it would be if she ran windows.
I used to have a link to my other website sillytech.com. Now I have the #1 result on google for skit comedy. I was delightfully surprised when I found that out.
It turns out that vastly more people on the web use the term sketch comedy, but still, I have always used skit comedy, and I stuck it in the title tag, which I think google uses intensly. Hmm... thinking of this just now I realize that I should put 'Mac OS X Risk' or something into the title of Lux's webpage.
You made me laugh at the canadian crack. That was before I saw your name there.
A piece of advice: put a link to your shareware website into your slashdot signature and/or as your personal homepage link. It can be a big boost to your google rank. As I am mainly a lurker by nature it also gives me an incentive to post things.
There have been rumors of this ilk popping around forever. They don't seem to mirror reality though. If you look at the actual relations between sun and apple they are a tortured affair. Witness apple's non-licensing of sun technologies like Java3D or JAI.
If you look into it, you'll just find sun blaming apple and apple blaming sun. So while a 'partnership' would probably be very cool, I just don't see it happening without some drastic changes taking place first.
The 'indie game' field has a whole spectrum, from one man companies to the biggies like PopCap.
I happen to fall pretty close to the one-man shop, with the only other person being a friend who does the graphics. I've only been in business for 8 months, but things have been getting better and better as time goes by and my game improves.
If you are interested in the real numbers then I can say that in the month of July I sold 32 copies. Not enough to make it my full-time job, but I still hold out that it could be in the future. My game is currently only available for Macintosh, and a windows/linux port is in the works. If you like the boardgame Risk then check me out...
All the Risk fans out there who are running Mac OS X should check out the shareware game Lux. It uses the same rules as Risk but you play on randomly generated boards. It comes with some HARD computer players and built-in network play. I may be a little biased, being the author of the program, but Lux is awesome.
The AI's that it ships with have been released under the GPL along with an AI SDK, so you can write your own if you want.
Wow, I can't believe that this comment was modded up. This guy has no clue what he's talking about. When Bush put up the steel tariff Canada was exempted from it. It was only against Europe, Japan and others.
I just got back from watching the eclipse in my local park. It was pretty cool to look at, but it went on for a long time and things moved very slooowly. Still, I think that it's valuable for everyone to watch at least one lunar eclipse in their life.
Joke of the night: I remember back before the dot-com era when they were just plain old Clipses.
I really know nothing at all about Gentoo Linux. What makes it different from other distros, etc.
What I do know is that Gentoo is a damn fine name. It's simple, catchy and cool. Believe it or not this could have a large impact on the success of Gentoo, especially with all the other shittily named distros out there.
Apple doesn't need TiVo because they already have the equivalent capabilities. A mac with the right software could do everything that TiVo does. What has Apple been spending its time on these days? The answer is software.
Now that they also have the nifty music store thingy set up it probably wouldn't be that hard to add videos of all kinds to their offerings. (Although they would have to change the name away from 'music store').
I am coming back from Mars, where they drive in fancy cars
and the King he is okay, he is coming home today
I am coming back from Mars, where there are no cheap cigars
and Elvis has said, that I could be just like they are
Hmmm, on the off chance that Apple actually bought Universal music, this would be a ready-made distribution channel for letting users make their own mix CDs.
The real truth of the matter is that for an application to really fit in with OS X it has to be cocoa. Just by using cocoa you get a whole wackload of stuff for free. Since all the other cocoa apps get this stuff as well it acts the same across different applications.
With carbon applications either you stick out like a sore thumb, or you try and recreate all the cocoa stuff (and that isn't always possible).
Apple is trying as hard as possible to get everyone to ditch carbon and move to cocoa. That's where all of their efforts are going. A large part of why OS X explorer sucked was because it was a carbon app.
I agree, IE for OSX sucks hard. But you have to remember that Microsoft put it out back in the 10.0 days. It was just a quick carbonization of the classic version.
Since then there really haven't been any updates to it, while the OS has changed considerably. So what has MS been doing all this time? Either sitting on their asses, or fixing up IE so it's as good as it was in classic.

"Sorry, I only know how to fix up macs. If you had one I could help you..."

So join the crusade. Give your mom a mac!
Yes, it was built by me, but it's still damn cool. So check it out.

Then there is MacGamefiles if you only want games.

I want exactly what .Mac has to offer, but I'm a cheap bastard and want it for free.
I'll bet the DEA is super happy about this.
But how many buttons does it have? Are they programable?
I want a SimAnt 2000.

Make sure to get something with a GPS locator in it.
It's a scary thought.
